Dr. Ramzi Fawaz is a Romnes Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of two monographs, The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics (2016) and Queer Forms (2022), both published by NYU Press.  i)  Creation of Ph.D. Working Group
G. Bonifacio.

ii)  Review of Graduate Studies Committee
G. Bonifacio stated that it might be a good idea to have a formal graduate committee to review/approve awards, research, etc.  There is currently none in place.  If this is to be formal, it should have a clear description as well as terms of reference.  Anyone interested in meeting to discuss the options should email the Dean.

Dean’s Report.
May 5, 2023

Budget:
We have no budget updates yet.  Some Deans are getting budget cuts; however, I will continue to advocate for FCEs for our Faculty.  Wait lists should be set at 20 students.

Enrollment:
There is no update yet with regard to enrollment numbers; I will reach out to Chairs with a reminder to monitor spring/summer course enrollments and submit them to me.

Decanal Search:
A communication bulletin has been sent out with information about the decanal candidates.  Bios are available for review.

Thank you to Jenny Roth with regard to the BA General and all her work as Assistant Dean.

Thank you to Monica and Valerie for serving as Chair and Vice-Chair of Faculty Council.

Thank you to all Chairs and Director for their support.

Thank you to all my colleagues support and patience over the past five years.

M. Flegel thanked Betsy for her five years of service.  She is looking forward to being her colleague.

7.

Assistant Dean’s Report.

J. Roth stated that the calendar changes for the BA General have gone through. She thanked everyone for their continued support.

8.
Other Business:
i)  Education Open-electives Discussion
A. Guttman stated that currently if a student leaves Concurrent Education, their courses must be “forced” for their degree audit.  This happens every time they switch.  Open electives would be easier for Chairs to manage, and for students as well.  Most agreed that this would be a good idea.  The question arose with regard to how to move forward with this suggestion, and if it would be a regulation change.  E. Birmingham stated that she would bring this forward to the Deputy Provost.

Applications info

Applications: April, cumulative, SSH
(Link to Applications Chart)

Budget:
♣    Please come to Senate and/or read minutes for budget update.
♣    I have reached out to those chairs who typically need FCE support from Dean’s office to ask them to have a timetable prepared with fewer FCES—and to ghost some courses until the budget position is clearer.
♣    We need to be clear when hiring that low enrolments or constrained budget could cancel classes.
♣    Once we have info from presentation to Senate AND this year’s budget reconciliation, I will let all chairs know where we are, and chairs may share out this info with departments.
Hires
♣    20 requests out, 7 replacement, 13 new (the new mainly in Orillia)
♣    After not hearing and knowing we needed to either hire, or find FCEs to manage programs, I noted six that we needed desperately, and prioritized four and sent a memo on March 15: Two were replacements for finishing LTAs; two were in replacements in departments that have lost more than two faculty in that past two years. We were awarded two hires, in ORPT, and Gender Women’s Studies/SJS.
♣    A number of folks have reached out about how concerned they are about the process, and I appreciate that; several have offered to lead discussions of shared solutions around future hiring, should there be positions in the future.
