Minutes:

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES COUNCIL

MINUTES

Friday, May 10, 2024
A meeting of the Faculty Council was held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 10:00 am via Zoom.

Guest Speakers:
Dr. Gillian Siddall – President and Vice-Chancellor
Dr. David Barnett – Provost and Vice-President (Academic)

G. Siddall announced updates on three major projects that are in progress at Lakehead University.

Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program
This joint initiative between Lakehead University and the University of Guelph is well underway.  Students will take the first two years of their degree at Lakehead, and the second two years at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph.  Throughout 2024 and 2025, we will focus on building the two facilities necessary to deliver the first two years of curriculum at the Thunder Bay campus. There was a significant impact of inflation on building costs which meant that additional funding had to be secured.  That is now in place and the first intake of students will start in Fall 2026.

Orillia Expansion
After receiving the funding commitment from the County of Simcoe, we are able to move forward with the next phase of planning for the Orillia Campus.  County Council has approved $15 million which will be allocated through annual contributions over the next 10 years.  These funds will be earmarked to support the future expansion of the Orillia Campus, including the growth of student support services, the introduction of new programs, and the buildout of study and learning places.

Kendaasiwin Centre
The Kendaasiwin Centre was initially given funding for construction under the Wynne government.  Unfortunately, with the change of parties in Ontario, the funds that were promised were cancelled.  Moving forward, we will be looking for formal consultation with Indigenous groups regarding the development of this project.  This is a very important step toward reconciliation and discussions will begin in the Fall of 2024.

Financial Sustainability
Although our international student numbers will remain unchanged, tuition remains frozen.  We will receive an increase of 5% to our base grant which will help.  Lakehead is also eligible for a Northern Grant; however, we do not know how much that will be.
A formation of a sustainability committee to address the structural deficit at Lakehead University is now underway. This committee will be looking for ways to cut costs as well as ways to generate more revenue.

Strategic Planning
The Strategic Plan for 2025/2030 is currently in the consultation phase.  We want to hear from members of our university and the communities we serve, and will be hosting a number of facilitated engagement sessions at Lakehead Thunder Bay in June.  We invite students, staff, and faculty to register here to participate in a session.  Please note, we are limiting registration to 15 people per session with a plan to host additional sessions based on demand.  Members of the community are also invited to provide input through this short, confidential survey, or directly to strategicplan@lakeheadu.ca. All information received through this channel will remain confidential and will not be attributed to any specific person/group.
We have already had several sessions, and there appear to be common priorities already emerging.

Submit your thoughts/concerns to the Advisory Committee; share your thoughts!

An open session followed generating the following points:

Faculty expressed concerns with regard to the following:
·       lack of resources, ie:  tenure track hires; LTA hires
·       lack of money for supplies and/or technology needed to run their programs
·       less staff available to help with community-based projects
·       burn out, ie:  trying to teach classes while continuing research and service
·       having to pay for spaces on campus for events, teaching a class, etc.

Ways for Improvement:
·       more cross-listed courses; increased collaboration among departments
·       more focus on “people”; review supports in place for faculty and modify according to results
·       develop new business model for the university in order to generate income

Quarterly Review of Strategic Plan
We should have a plan in place regarding the number of FCEs we will require to run our programs for the next two years and develop a quarterly review of accomplishments to date.  This could be in the form of a newsletter from the Dean’s Office.  This could include events both on and off campus which would help our faculty gain more recognition in the community.  This in turn could also help recruitment efforts.

Recruitment and Conversion Plans
Recruitment is ongoing in hopes of increasing our current enrollment numbers.  The Recruitment Office is there to help all of us so please reach out to them is you require assistance.

Ambassadors of Lakehead University:  Research and Community Outreach
It would be beneficial if our faculty was able to share our current research accomplishments with the community in various ways.

Bookstore Vouchers for Applicants Reception
Vouchers for $10.00 will be given to those students interested in applying to the departments/school in our faculty.  These will be given out at both Applicant Receptions in Orillia and Thunder Bay.

Niiji Project Expo:  Indigenous Student Preview Day
This event will be held on April 30, 2024

Updates:

Ph.D. Working Group
Committee Membership:  M. Haiven; I. Lemée; B. Maiangwa; T. Puddphatt; C. Sanders; K. Burnett
The committee has had its first initial meeting to develop a plan with regard to what this degree might look like.  It was mentioned that the development of a Ph.D. in our faculty was included in the SMA3 report.  A Ph.D. in the Social Justice Studies program has been mentioned with a focus on Global Studies.  There will be collaborative discussions held in the process in hopes of enhancing research culture as well as supporting others in their own.

Asian Studies Minor Consulting Group
Committee membership:  P. Das; S. Islam; I. Lemée; J. Liu; B. Dunn
This will be a major modification and will be hosted by the Department of Languages.  The material needed for Curriculum Navigator is currently being developed.

Northern Studies Minor:  Review of Courses
This program will appeal to all students around the world.  Discussions have been held with T. Randall, Dean of Science and Environmental Studies, and B. Leblon, Faculty of Natural Resource Management, in hopes to have a more integrated approach

7.
Other Business.
i)  Formation of a Special Committee to develop Terms of Reference for a Proposed Graduate Committee.
A. Carastathis started the discussion to first determine if this committee would be active for a short period and end when the specific project is done, or if it would be permanent.

G. Bonifacio stated that she could draft the terms of reference but would prefer to consult   the faculty.  This committee would act as an advisory body to the Dean when determining the Dean’s Award, and possibly new awards created for students in the future.  such as community service and advocacy. The idea is to have more than one person deciding on awards for students.
Ultimately, after some discussion, it was decided not to move forward with this committee.  If the need arose, a special committee could be created at that time.  The Dean can decide on awards related to financial need forwarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.  Graduate program coordinators are already involved in evaluating the OGS awards.

Dr. Ramzi Fawaz is a Romnes Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of two monographs, The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics (2016) and Queer Forms (2022), both published by NYU Press. Business Arising from the Minutes
 i)  Creation of Ph.D. Working Group
G. Bonifacio discussed the possibility of forming an informal working group to develop a Ph.D. program in Global Studies.  The first step would be a discussion with the faculty for ideas and suggestions as to how to move forward.  It was mentioned that some departments have tried to move forward on developing a Ph.D. program within their own departments; however, support from administration was lacking.  Also, it was stated that the group would need to let students know what kind of jobs would be available that were non-academic.  Anyone interested in being part of this group should email G. Bonifacio.

ii)  Review of Graduate Studies Committee
G. Bonifacio stated that it might be a good idea to have a formal graduate committee to review/approve awards, research, etc.  There is currently none in place.  If this is to be formal, it should have a clear description as well as terms of reference.  Anyone interested in meeting to discuss the options should email the Dean.
