Mathematics today is increasing as the essential background of our quantitative and technological environment.  Some students now in high school will go on to successful careers in mathematics itself, but more will use and apply mathematical reasoning in a wide range of professions.  There are other well-established high school mathematics competitions, but mostly they seek to discover mathematical superstars, while we hope to stimulate the mathematical talents and the mathematical confidence of the stars and those going on to careers in teaching, information sciences, engineering, medicine, skilled trades, commerce, banking and business, and many others.  For example, one very important area of applications of Mathematics is genetics, of worldwide, national and particular interest to Northern Ontario.
Mathematics is a group and social activity, and our competition emphasizes that aspect through concentration on team problem solving, in addition to individual efforts.  From our experience in the first four competitions we are encouraged by evidence that the team aspect is particularly attractive to those who participate.

Beginning with 2003, our contests have expanded from 70 contestants to over 150 in 2006.
TD Canada Trust has been our principal donor for contest expenses, and we are pleased that they will continue their support for 2007.  To see more about our past contests, including pictures and sample problems, please use the following links.

For 2006 we made an application to the Canadian Mathematical Society for support under their Endowment Grants Program for contest support, particularly to support an expansion to the region of Northwestern Ontario.  Our request was favourably received and is being supported by the Society.  We applied for this grant again in for the 2007 contest, and not only did we receive support for this year's contest, but we received money for the next two competitions as well.   We are approaching a number of high schools outside the city of Thunder Bay to test their interest in participating in 2007.  We are particularly encouraged by the recognition by the Canadian Mathematical Society of the value of our contest.

To provide advanced practice for interested students, there will be a sequence of problem tutorials.   Starting February 14, 2007,  the Department of Mathematical Sciences will host problem solving tutorials at Lakehead University.
Place:  Ryan Building 2023
Time:   Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30PM
Simply show up during that time to partake in the tutorials.   All you need to bring is some paper and writing material.  If you require further information about these tutorials, please contact the organizers at mathcontest@lakeheadu.ca

Financial contributions are welcomed to support the contest in the areas of contestants' lunches, awards, and prizes, and monthly pre-contest problem activities and monthly awards. Contributions will receive tax receipts from Lakehead University, together with appropriate notice on this site.  Donations should be sent to:

The 2007 TD Canada Trust Northwestern Ontario High School Mathematics Competition could not be held without the generous support of local organizations and businesses, as well as the time of a number of volunteers.  In particular, we would like to thank the following organizations for their support:
