The Science and Environmental Studies Biotechnology and Allied Sciences Symposium

SESBASS 2025
PAST - PRESENT - FUTURE

The Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies is hosting the SES Biotechnology and Allied Sciences Symposium (SESBASS) on May 1-2, 2025.  SESBASS 2025 will be held in FB 2023 and the Graduate Student Lounge in the CASES building at Lakehead University.

I am excited to announce plans for a special three-part event this year, featuring a Symposium, Reunion and a Tribute to Dr. Heidi Schraft.

Symposium
The Biotechnology PhD Program organizes annual symposia to provide students with opportunities to present their research, attend talks by experts, and network with peers. This year's symposium theme is Past – Present – Future.

Reunion
During our recent cyclical review of the Biotechnology PhD program, I had the pleasure of connecting with alumni to learn about their career paths and the impact of their PhD experience. Many expressed a strong interest in reconnecting with peers, whether in person or virtually. This reunion will provide an excellent opportunity for us to come together and celebrate our shared journey.

Tribute
The Biotechnology PhD program was initiated by Dr. Heidi Schraft, who formed the Biotechnology Committee and spearheaded the proposal in 2005. The first cohort began in 2008, and since then, the program has graduated over 60 students, with 26 currently enrolled. As many of you may know, Dr. Schraft will be retiring in June 2025. This event will serve as a tribute to her significant contributions, including establishing the first PhD program within the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies and developing the Applied Life Science stream in Biology.

SESBASS will once again bringing together researchers with diverse skills and knowledge who share common goals, enabling them to discuss and develop projects together. With topical sessions on:

  • Environmental Biotechnology
  • Medical Innovations
  • Bio-inspired Engineering and Materials Research
