Rescheduled Test/Exam/Quiz Accommodation

Updated March 2026

Students with a test/exam/quiz rescheduling accommodation may on rare occasions experience barriers to writing a scheduled test/exam/quiz due to serious fluctuating functional limitations related to disability and/or medical condition symptoms. Not all students registered with SAS have a test/exam/quiz rescheduling accommodation; Students can refer to their accommodation letter for confirmation of their accommodations.

Memory Aids (in person only)

A memory aid accommodation refers to information that students, whose memory retrieval is impaired, are permitted to bring and use during an in person test/exam/quiz. Students with a memory aid accommodation have provided a medically documented need for a memory aid to compensate for significant memory processing deficits, such as sequencing, working memory or long-term memory retrieval. Not all students registered with SAS have a memory aid accommodation; Instructors can refer to a students accommodation letter for confirmation.

Equipment and Aids in the Test Room (in person only)

Students may face barriers related to the functional limitations of their specific disability that can be supported by specific equipment or aids. SAS provides or coordinates aids/equipment required by students for in person/on campus tests/exams/quizzes. Instructors are not responsible to provide aids/equipment.

The Accommodation Letter will state:

Equipment

  • Footstool or chair for support (for in person tests written with SAS)

Testing Room Accommodations (in person only)

Students may face barriers, related to the functional limitations of their disability and/or medical condition, that may be accommodated by the number of students in a room, the location of a room or the accessibility of the room for mobility equipment/aids. SAS coordinates the appropriate rooms to accommodate students with testing room accommodations. Students writing in person/on campus tests/exams/quizzes are responsible to register to write these assessments with the SAS office.

Testing Room accommodations can include the following:

Assessment Recommended Accommodations

Students with a disability and/or medical condition that have provided documentation that states specific accommodation recommendations to assist the student in overcoming barriers to learning. These recommendations are related to the student's cognitive ability/memory skills, academic functioning, attention and behaviour, executive functioning, and adaptive functioning.

Accommodations for Alteration to Date/Time of a Scheduled Test/Exam/Quiz

Some students may have provided medical documentation that supports the need to alter the scheduled date and/or time of a test/exam/quiz to reduce barriers created by the functional limitations related to their disability and/or medical condition. For example;

  • A student is only able to write afternoon tests/exams/quizzes due to the sedating effects of medication; the accommodation is the student requests to write a test regularly scheduled for 8:30 am at 12 pm instead.

Breaks

Breaks are an important and effective accommodation during a test/exam/quiz for students that require time to manage disability related symptoms related to medical, physical, cognitive, mental health functional limitations while writing an assessment. The accommodation letter may state one or more of the following accommodations;

  • Breaks as required: break time to be added

  • Breaks to stand,stretch and move: break time to be added

Accommodated Extra Time

Students with approved accommodated extra time have provided SAS with medical documentation that supports an accommodation of extra time to assist the student in overcoming barriers in a test taking environment. These recommendations are related to the student's functional limitations including: cognitive ability/memory skills, academic functioning, attention and behaviour, executive functioning, and/or adaptive functioning.

The accommodation letter may state one or more of the following accommodations;
