Test/Exam/Quiz Accommodations

Some of the more common accommodations will be linked below for faculty. Faculty are encouraged to reach out to the SAS office with any questions about specific accommodations and how they work. 

Experiential Learning Accommodations

Experiential Learning (EL) supports students in gaining hands-on learning that helps them transition to the workforce. Experiential Learning includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Field Experience 

  • Field Placement 

  • Internship

  • Professional Practicum

  • Labs

Environment/Equipment/Aids in the Classroom

Students with accommodations of environmental (room) accommodations, specific equipment or aids in class have provided medical documentation from the student’s healthcare professional that details the functional limitations barriers a student’s faces due to their disability and/or medical condition. 

Breaks in Class Accommodation

Accommodation Wording Example: Breaks to stand/stretch/move to support disability and/or medical condition: in class or student may leave classroom as required (wording may vary)

Although students have the autonomy to leave class, accommodation related to breaks during class are provided with the intent to inform instructors that there may be a student in the class that may need to leave class, stand up and move periodically or frequently due to disability and/or medical condition functional limitations. 

Rescheduling Tests/Exams Accommodation

Students with a test/exam/quiz rescheduling accommodation may on rare occasions be incapacitated and unable to write a scheduled test/exam/quiz due to serious fluctuating functional limitations related to disability and/or medical condition symptoms.

Not all students registered with SAS have a test/exam/quiz rescheduling accommodation; Instructors should refer to a student's accommodation letter for confirmation of their accommodations.

Extensions on Assignments Accommodation (up to 7 days)

Students with an extension accommodation have provided SAS with medical documentation supporting that periodically the student may experience barriers that impact their ability to meet assignment due dates. Not all students registered with SAS have an extension accommodation; Students can refer to their accommodation letter for confirmation of their accommodations.

Extensions on Assignments Accommodation (up to 7 days)

Students with an extension accommodation have provided SAS with medical documentation supporting that periodically the student may experience barriers that impact their ability to meet assignment due dates. Not all students registered with SAS have an extension accommodation; Instructors can refer to the students accommodation letter for confirmation.

Accommodation Wording: May require time extensions for assignments when linked to disability and/or medical condition; Student to provide extension request to Prof. and SAS.

The Basics of Academic Accommodations

The process and purpose of academic accommodations is to remove barriers, allowing for equal access to learning opportunities, experienced by students with disability and/or medical conditions related impacts, while maintaining academic integrity and allowing for standard academic challenges.

Volunteer Peer Note Taking

From time to time an instructor may feel they cannot implement the "Access to Lecture Material; recording capability for lectures in a class" accommodation in a class. As per The Policy “The instructor shall consult with their Dean and collaborate with SAS to discuss alternative solutions related to the accommodation plan if necessary”.
