2023 Research Grant RFP

Eligibility:

Investigators and/or research teams affiliated with United States public or private entities such as universities, colleges, government agencies, veterinary hospitals and clinics, animal welfare organizations, and other organizations. This opportunity is also available to Canadian registered public universities and qualified municipalities/public bodies which can demonstrate the applicability of the research to improve the welfare of animals in the US.

How to Apply:

The ASPCA’s 2023 Research Grant RFP is open until 7/31 for research in any discipline that addresses a broad scope of topics in animal welfare and human-animal interactions: animal behavior, animal cruelty and/or psychological trauma as a consequence of cruelty, and increasing access to veterinary care. Please feel free to share with any faculty or students who may be interested in applying. The solicitation is also open to researchers studying topics with relevance to animal welfare (e.g., criminal justice, public health, psychology, economics) who wish to use the funding to add information about pet health, cruelty, etc. to an existing study.

Ship Time Program

How to Apply:

This Ship Time program is aimed at all NSERC-funded researchers who intend to use a vessel for their DG-supported research in the coming years. It applies to the following: Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO)/ Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) vessels, undersea vehicles operated by the  Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility or other similar research platforms, and any other vessels crewed in conformance with the  Canada Shipping Act, 2001 (or similar, for foreign vessels).

Ship Time grants support ongoing DG research programs. These grants recognize the high costs associated with chartering research vessels in Canada and abroad. Applicants (including co-applicants) must hold a Discovery Grant (or be successful in the current DG competition) to be eligible to receive a Ship Time grant. Recipients of Ship Time grants must use the funds as described in the application. Requests to use an alternate vessel will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Energy Innovation Program – On-road Transportation Decarbonization Call for Proposals

How to Apply:

The Energy Innovation Program – On-road Transportation Decarbonization Call for Proposals will help decarbonize the transportation sector by funding research, development, and demonstration projects that:

  • Address technical and market barriers to the demonstration or deployment of zero/low-emission on-road medium & heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs).
  • Increase the uptake of zero-emission on-road vehicles.
  • Improve the transportation system’s overall efficiency.

This call will not support "inside-the-cell" battery specific innovation or off-road transportation related innovation. NRCan will continue to consider potential future programming focused on these important priorities. Projects focusing on electrical powertrain components located outside the battery cells, including battery module components, such as the battery management system (BMS), are eligible under this call.

Basics of Better Mental Health Program

How to Apply:

Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in Canada. Evidence-based research has established that mental illness is a significant cause of limited quality of life, an important risk factor for premature mortality, and costly with respect to societal welfare.

Brain Canada, Krembil Foundation, and Women’s Brain Health Initiative (WBHI), with the support of The Erika Legacy Foundation and Power Corporation of Canada have launched the Basics of Better Mental Health Program, which will fund experimental research that will provide insight into the causes and onset of mental illnesses, explore the neuropathological changes and information-processing deficits that may eventually lead to new directions for treatments and interventions, and explore the role of sex and gender in mental health.

The inclusion of sex-specific biological considerations in mental health research is important for understanding the biological roots of mental illnesses. Mental health disorders that may be explored, but are not limited to, in this competition are; depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders.

A $3.3M pool of funds will be available for this program to support three team grants of $1.1M each, over three years.
