The community-based stream of the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) is a federal grant that supports community-based projects that are designed by seniors for seniors. This program funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contribute to improving their health and well-being.  Eligible organizations can apply for up to $25,000 for projects that are led by seniors and are volunteer based.

Projects submitted for this grant (up to $25,000) must meet at least 1 of the following program objectives:

• promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations
• engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others
• expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse
• supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors
• providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors

If your proposed project is requesting capital assistance, it must meet at least 1 of the first 4 program objectives.

The Imagining Canada’s Future Ideas Lab is a multi-stage funding opportunity. Stage 1 consisted of a hybrid workshop where participants formed multidisciplinary teams, then developed and pitched innovative, interdisciplinary project ideas on the theme of Global Health and Wellness for the 21st Century.

Teams are now invited to apply for funding to support the development of their partnerships and advance their project ideas in this second stage of the ICF Ideas Lab.

Successful applicants will be expected to:

• formalize partnerships through agreements, governance frameworks and/or strategic plans;
• establish connections with stakeholders in relevant sectors;
• advance their project by undertaking preliminary research;
• attend a working forum organized by SSHRC (tentatively scheduled for fall 2024–winter 2025);
• seek out full project funding from SSHRC and other research agencies at the end of the two-year grant.

The aim of this funding opportunity is to advance collaborative partnerships with communities focused on implementation science and intervention research to reduce the transmission and health impacts of infectious and congenital syphilis.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Advance community-centred approaches to conducting implementation science and intervention research by establishing meaningful partnerships between communities most affected by rising rates of syphilis — particularly Indigenous, those in the Prairies and rural, remote and isolated communities — and health researchers from academic or other research institutions;
• Accelerate knowledge mobilization across the continuum of care between populations that are disproportionately affected and health care providers, community organizations, decision/policy makers and researchers by supporting the co-creation, synthesis, application and sharing of research findings; and
• Improve health equity by conducting research that addresses the systemic, social and behavioural causes of health inequities in our health system that have contributed to the rise in syphilis within specific populations including Indigenous and rural, remote and isolated communities.

The CSPC Trailblazer Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated novelty and creativity through leadership, vision, courage, and commitment, and positively and significantly impacted the Canadian Science, Technology and Innovation ecosystem. These individuals have been instrumental in boldly spearheading change via one or more transformative initiatives, while blazing a trail and inspiring others to follow.

CSPC 2023 will present three Trailblazer Awards, one in each of the categories of Policy for Science, Science for Policy and Innovation Policy.

CSPC encourages nominations from all disciplines of policy and sciences (social and human sciences, mathematical, physical and life sciences, engineering and technology) and from all sectors (governments at all levels, academia, private and nonprofit sectors, media, and others). Together with the Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC), Brain Canada is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2023-2024 Alzheimer Society Research Program (ASRP) competition. The ASRP provides grants and awards to support Canadian research that promises new insights into causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. 

The grants available for co-funding by ASC and Brain Canada are: 

• New Investigator Operating Grants are designed to help launch the careers of outstanding researchers who are within the first six (6) years of their initial academic appointment. The ASRP will provide up to $200,000 for a period of up to four (4) years. Brain Canada Foundation will co-fund up to two (2) successful applications.

• Proof of Concept Grants are designed to fund innovative, potentially high-risk, and high-reward research that pushes beyond the boundaries of our existing understanding of dementia. The ASRP will provide up to $100,000 for a period of up to three (3) years. Brain Canada Foundation will co-fund up to twelve (12) successful applications.

The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) for Social Sciences and Humanities has just launched a fourth joint research funding opportunity, entitled: Democracy, Governance and Trust (DGT).

The Democracy, Governance and Trust (DGT) funding opportunity brings together research funding organizations, including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), from countries in South America, Africa, North America and Europe. The funding opportunity will support international projects that will contribute to our understanding of how democracy, governance and trust play a role in tackling both short-term crises and long-term challenges.

The funding opportunity is open to teams with members from at least three participating countries, representing both sides of the Atlantic. Research partners will receive funding from the national funding agency for their country, for projects that can last up to 36 months.

The funding opportunity focuses on the following nine cross-cutting themes:

• Concepts, understandings, and models of democracy, governance and trust
• Education
• Media, information and communication
• Economies and economic systems
• Identities, discrimination, marginalization and inequalities
• Ecosystems and environments

The Fellowship Program supports and encourages high-quality academic research related to the Bank’s core functions. In addition, the Program promotes collaboration between the Bank’s researchers and leading academics at Canadian post-secondary institutions such as yours.

There are two types of Fellowship Program awards:

• the Fellowship Award, which provides annual funding totalling $90,000 to leading academic researchers for a term of up to five years; and
• the Governor’s Award, which consists of an annual research grant of $30,000 for emerging leaders in academic research who have obtained their PhDs within the last 10 years. This award is for a term of up to two years.

Kidney Health Research Grants provide financial support to researchers in defraying research operating costs, including the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment and the payment of laboratory assistants. Grants are available for one, two or three years. The research must be carried out in Canada.

Applications for the 2024 Kidney Health Research Grant Competition must be completed via the on-line application system ProposalCentral www.ProposalCentral.com. The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Strengthen capacity for clinical trials research in STBBI by establishing a network with pan-Canadian governance that advances a diverse and inclusive leadership model and by leveraging partnerships with other Canadian and international clinical trial networks;
• Advance a community-centred approach to clinical trials research by ensuring meaningful engagement of community members and People with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE) throughout the entire research process, including in research priority-setting, leading to more relevant, applicable and timely solutions for populations at greatest risk of STBBI in Canada and abroad;
• Mobilize knowledge amongst decision makers, health practitioners, PWLLE, communities, industry, Indigenous communities and HIV/AIDS and STBBI researchers in Canada and abroad in both official languages to enhance, share and foster equitable benefit of evidence-based interventions;
• Develop skills and methodology for the future of clinical trials research by establishing the framework for an interdisciplinary training and mentoring network, baseline activities for training across the Teams and a vision and appropriate capacity to support expanded activities through the anticipated Phase 2 training and mentoring platforms;
• Improve Health Equity by advancing equitable access to participation in clinical trials with a focus on key populations, and by supporting clinical trials research and interventions that address and reduce the impact of stigma, racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism and other forms of discrimination and systemically entrenched oppression;
• Advance commitments towards Truth and Reconciliation by upholding the rights and priorities of Indigenous Peoples, including through Indigenous-led research, respecting self-determination, and supporting distinction-based approaches.
