It is anticipated that 95% of all captured CO₂ will need to be permanently stored to achieve net-zero emissions. To ensure the permanent removal of CO₂ from the carbon cycle, CO₂ needs to be sequestered and stored.

As part of the Energy Innovation Program – Carbon capture, utilization and storage RD&D Call, the Storage & Transportation focus area aims to characterize and develop safe, permanent sub-surface CO₂ storage, and technologies that support safe and efficient transportation of CO₂ and storage opportunities across Canada.

The Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program supports the training and mentoring of teams of highly qualified students and postdoctoral fellows from Canada and abroad through the development of innovative training programs that

• encourage collaborative and integrative approaches, and address significant scientific challenges associated with Canada’s research priorities
• facilitate the transition of new researchers from trainees to productive employees in the Canadian workforce

These innovative programs must foster the acquisition and development of important professional skills among students and postdoctoral fellows that complement their qualifications and technical skills, and improve their job readiness for careers in industry, government, non-governmental organizations and/or academia.

As in the past, it is anticipated that Lakehead University will have a quota of two letters of intent that it can submit to the NSERC CREATE competition.  If researchers intend to submit a LOI to this program, they are asked to notify the Office of Research Services (ahacquo1@lakeheadu.ca) by February 1, 2023  of their intention to apply to this opportunity.  If more than two teams indicate that they are submitting an LOI to the CREATE program, an internal competition will need to be held to determine which two LOIs will be submitted to NSERC.  For more information, please click here.

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) funds downstream research and development (R&D) projects that address real-world opportunities and challenges defined by “Receptor” organizations such as industry, government, or not-for-profit entities. These organizations should have the expertise, resources and commitment to commercialize or implement the project’s outcomes. Projects must be active collaborations between the Receptor organization (Canadian or international) and a Canadian academic researcher. Both must play an integral role in the project. These projects are co-funded by Receptors and other stakeholders and must have the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for Canada.
