NSERC-SSHRC Sustainable Agriculture Research Initiative

How to Apply:
From the NSERC website:

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), are pleased to announce a new partnership to develop the solutions required for a sustainable, resilient, and profitable agriculture and agri-food sector in the uncertain climate and net zero economy of the future.

Budget 2022, in support of the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan – Canada’s Next Steps for Clean Air and a Strong Economy, included a commitment to engage farmers in building a clean and prosperous future as part of immediate action towards climate mitigation. The NSERC-SSHRC Sustainable agriculture initiative, in collaboration with AAFC, will help reinforce, coordinate and scale up Canada's domestic agriculture research capabilities through partnerships among universities, colleges and organizations from the private, public or not-for-profit sectors.
This partnership will fund multidisciplinary, collaborative networks of researchers, mobilizing expertise and technologies in the social and natural sciences, engineering and in areas that broaden the traditional network of agriculture research partners. This funding will support both fundamental and applied research to accelerate transformative alternative practices, technologies and their adoptions, as well as to and build reliable and consistent measurement tools and performance metrics.

With total funding of up to $72 million from NSERC and SSHRC, this call is open to Canadian university researchers in social sciences and humanities, natural sciences, and engineering. Eligible college faculty may participate as co-applicants. Grant support from this initiative will range from $500,000 to $2,000,000 per year, for four years. NSERC and SSHRC will provide support for 100% of the eligible costs of research. Although partner organizations do not need to provide cash contributions to participate, they must actively play a role in the research and support it through in-kind contributions.

Preparatory funding requests will be accepted until May 8, 2023, by 8 pm (ET). The deadline for full project applications is November 8, 2023, by 8 pm (ET).

Ben Barres Early Career Acceleration Award (Cycle 2)

Eligibility:
  • All applicants must hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent degree and have a faculty position or equivalent independent investigator status at a college, university, medical school or other research facility.
  • Applicants should have been in their first independent position for a minimum of two years and less than six years as of the due date for the Letter of Intent application. Independence in an academic setting is typically demonstrated by a full-time faculty appointment, a tenure-track position, allocated space, a start-up package, and institutional commitment as defined or verified in a letter from a department chair or equivalent. Independence may be defined differently in different types of organizations. Note: an upload of the letter or proof of independence is not required at the time of application. CZI will make exceptions to these criteria in cases of institutionally approved career breaks, e.g. family or medical leave, etc. (if this applies to you, please contact sciencegrants@chanzuckerberg.com).
  • Applications may be submitted by domestic and foreign non-profit organizations; public and private institutions, such as colleges, universities, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments; and eligible agencies of the federal government. For-profit organizations are not eligible. All grants will be awarded to institutions, not individuals.
  • There may be more than one application from each institution.
How to Apply:

Scotiabank Economic Resilience Research Fund

How to Apply:

After partnering to fund 18 high impact research internships across Canada in 2021 and 2022 Mitacs and  Scotiabank are launching a third round of the Scotiabank Economic Resilience Research Fund (SERRF).

SERRF is designed to help reduce the financial barriers for charities and not for profit organizations to access expertise from Canadian Academic Institutions through the Mitacs Accelerate program.

Through this third round of the program SERRF funding will be awarded to up to 50 research internship projects to occur in the fall 2023.

The SERRF has been launched to support research projects in three key focus areas that are central to Scotiabank’s ScotiaRise initiative:

  1. Accelerate newcomer integration
Proposed research projects will explore the experiences of newcomers to Canada (in the past three years) including immigrants, refugees, and temporary foreign workers to help fast track meaningful employment for newcomers to the country. Integration essentials might include language, culture and life skills, training and help qualifying for and finding employment, and support networks.

  1. Increase high school graduation and post-secondary participation

Proposed research projects will target disadvantaged populations, including Canadian Indigenous communities and at-risk youth to ultimately facilitate a higher rate of high school graduation and post-secondary participation. Post-secondary education is defined broadly, to include university, college, and trades programs.

  1. Remove barriers to career advancement for disadvantaged groups

Proposed research projects should be focused on one or more equity seeking groups that face obstacles of sexism, racism, or homophobia (e.g., people with disability, Indigenous, veterans, LGBTQ, women, and BIPOC). The project should determine how to remove barriers to meaningful employment and find solutions to career entry and advancement.

Successful projects will receive up to $12,750 in funding from Scotiabank and Mitacs to support a four to six month Mitacs Accelerate internship. The funding contribution from the SERRF program reduces the required contribution from the not for profit or charity partner organization from $7,500 to $3,750.

This opportunity is time limited and interested projects must submit an Expression of Interest by April 5, 2023
