Denon Start receives the President's Award for Undergraduate Studies

The Department of Biology is pleased to announce that Honour's student Mr. Denon Start (supervised by Dr. Douglas Morris) was awarded the President's Award for Undergraduate Studies. This award is given annually to full- or part-time graduating students from Lakehead University. Students must have occupied positions of responsibility in student organizations and/or by their activities and achievements, have made contributions that have earned them the special gratitude of a Department, School, Faculty and/or the University. Denon joins a growing list of the Biology Department's undergraduate and graduate students who have earned this prestigious award.

Congratulations Denon!  You have been a wonderful ambassador for Lakehead University and the Department of Biology.  All the best as you pursue your research interests as a Master of Science candidate at the University of Toronto.

Christina Mol receives Tom Peters Scholarship at Ontario Mine Reclamation Symposium

Christina Mol, a Ph.D. candidate in Lakehead's Biotechnology program, recently received the Tom Peters graduate student award at the Ontario Mine Reclamation Symposium and Field Trip held in Peterborough.  Christina, supervised by Dr. Peter Lee, earned a $5,000 scholarship for her presentation on research about plants stabilizing metals in soils at closed mine sites.

Dan Durston awarded SES Science Engagement Scholarship

The Department of Biology is pleased to announce that Daniel Durston was one of two SES students honoured on January 9, 2014 with receipt of the Annie Werbicka Childs Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) Science Engagement Scholarship.
 
This is a new scholarship awarded to full-time students entering second or third year of study in any of the Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies Programs on the basis of academic excellence and participation in extra- curricular science activities.
 
Dan is enrolled in the HBSc BIOL program and the Department is proud of his academic achievements and his involvement with numerous science based activities:
  • Summer NSERC in 2013,
  • Research internships with Dr. Douglas Morris and Dr. Lada Malek,
  • Assistant organizer of the 2013 workshop entitled Rapid Change in Canada's North hosted by Lakehead University,
  • Participant in the fall 2013 competitive conference entitled Careers and Research in Ecology and Evolution hosted by the University of Toronto.
