Biology Professor Launches New Website Dedicated to Study of Birds - Aves Vitae

 

Dr. Janice M. Hughes, a professor in Lakehead's Department of Biology, has launched a new website dedicated to increasing knowledge and appreciation of birds, Aves Vitae.

The site features three active sections on avian biology: Birds in the News, Ornithology 101, and Featured Species; reviews of recent non-fiction books on pertinent subjects; hundreds of colour photographs; and dozens of links to other useful ornithological resources.

Biotechnology PhD Students Win Awards at National Conference

 

Biotechnology PhD students Bill Dew and Ali Azizishirazi, from Lakehead's department of biology Aquatic Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology Laboratory (ABEL), have won awards for their presentations at this year's Aquatic Toxicity Workshop. Both students are supervised by associate professor of biology, Dr. Greg Pyle.

At this national conference that took place this week in Winnipeg, Ali Azizishirazi won third place for best student presentation for his talk on Rapid olfactory recovery of wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from metal contaminated lakes after short term acclimation to clean water. Bill Dew won first place overall for his presentation on Copper, calcium, and olfaction in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas): considerations for a chemosensory based Biotic Ligand Model.

First Graduate Students at Orillia

Another First for Orillia Campus – Full-time Graduate Students

 

Lakehead University Orillia student Sheri O’Connor graduated in June with first class standing in the Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science and Bachelor of Education programs (HBASc/BEd). Sheri is now one of Orillia’s first full-time graduate students.

O’Connor and fellow Lakehead graduate Debbie Balika are enrolled in the Master of Science in Biology program at the Orillia campus. They represent the first full-time masters’ students at the campus.
