October 1, 2021 – Orillia and Thunder Bay, Ont.

Dr. Rita Shelton Deverell has been named Lakehead University’s next chancellor.

The announcement was made by President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson, who served as Chair of the University’s Chancellor Electoral Board, on Friday, Oct. 1.

The chancellor is the titular head of the University, conferring all degrees and diplomas, as well as representing the University on other ceremonial occasions and participating in outreach and philanthropic initiatives.

Dr. Deverell will be formally installed as Lakehead’s 10th chancellor at convocation in 2022.

She has worked as an academic, broadcaster, television producer, journalist, and theatre artist. Dr. Deverell has received numerous awards, including two Geminis and the Black Women’s Civic Engagement Network Leadership Award. She is the first person of colour to serve as Lakehead University’s chancellor.

Dr. Deverell was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2005 for her pioneering work in broadcasting, and received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the Lakehead Orillia Convocation ceremony in 2017.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me to be a worthy symbolic head of Lakehead University,” she said.

“Symbols are important: some will see a Woman, following in the outstanding footsteps of ninth Chancellor Lyn McLeod and fifth Chancellor the Rev. Dr. The Hon. Lois Wilson. Others will see a Person of Colour.

“Still others will see an artist, a teacher, and a member of President McPherson’s Committee on Truth and Reconciliation. You can’t be what you can’t see, and I will do my best to represent Lakehead University to all its many past, present, and future communities and stakeholders.”

Known for breaking barriers for women and people of colour, Dr. Deverell is a scholar and a founder of Vision TV. She was the first woman to lead a journalism program in a Canadian university, and concluded her term as News Director at APTN in 2005 where she mentored her Indigenous successor.

“On behalf of Lakehead University’s Board of Governors, I would like to welcome Dr. Rita Deverell as the new chancellor of Lakehead University,” said Angela Maltese, Chair of Lakehead University’s Board of Governors.

“Dr. Deverell has been a pioneer and barrier breaker throughout her distinguished career in broadcasting, journalism, and theatre. Her commitment to advocating for an inclusive post-secondary education aligns well with Lakehead University and the Board’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

The selection process for Lakehead University’s chancellor involved inviting the public and University communities to submit nominations. Candidate nominations were reviewed by the University’s Chancellor Electoral Board, which then recommended the appointment of Dr. Deverell.

President McPherson served as Chair of the University’s 26-member Chancellor Electoral Board.

“We are so proud to welcome Rita as Lakehead’s chancellor, and I want to thank those who were involved in the selection process,” Dr. McPherson said.

“I very much look forward to working with our new chancellor, and relying on her wisdom and experience throughout the initiatives she will be involved in. I would like to offer my deepest thanks to current Chancellor Lyn McLeod, who we have been so proud to have as our chancellor since 2017.

“It continues to be an absolute honour and pleasure to have her as part of our Lakehead University community as her presence and insights bring grace and dignity to everything she is involved with, and she has inspired our students and staff alike,” Dr. McPherson added.

Photo of Dr. Charles Levkoe

Dr. Charles Levkoe

September 28, 2021 – Thunder Bay, Ont.

Dr. Charles Levkoe is receiving $100,000 from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and $50,000 from Lakehead University to offer critical insight into some of Ontario's most important food systems-related issues.

Dr. Levkoe and his team will study civil society networks, social movements, and food systems governance with the goal of enhancing food security, climate action, democratic engagement, and social and environmental justice in connection with food systems.

“This research will support community action and help policymakers understand and act on some of Ontario's most pressing contemporary challenges,” said Dr. Levkoe, Associate Professor in Health Sciences and Canada Research Chair in Equitable and Sustainable Food Systems at Lakehead University.

“Engagement in food systems governance is a powerful vehicle for building more healthy, equitable, and sustainable food systems,” he added.

This community-engaged, action-oriented research will study the evolution of civil society networks rooted in place-based initiatives. The research team will engage in food systems governance through participatory decision-making, policy interventions, and active democratic participation.

Beyond providing direct value to Ontario's civil society networks, food studies scholars and policy makers, Dr. Levkoe’s research will also serve as the basis for a national and global exchange of knowledge and experiences, leading to new capacity for innovation in democratic and participatory food systems governance – comprised of policies, laws, and regulations that shape and influence the nature of our food systems.

Details about Dr. Levkoe’s research can be found at foodsystems.lakeheadu.ca.

Provided by The Ministry of Colleges and Universities, the Early Researcher Award Program grant helps promising, recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their teams. It was created to improve Ontario’s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent in all research disciplines.

The grant is to be used over five years to fund eligible expenses for a research team of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, associates, and technicians.

Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson is excited about the significance of this partnership.

“We understand the barriers that Indigenous students face when looking for ways to start and nurture careers,” she stated. “Partnerships like this one with OpenText will contribute greatly to our students’ futures by providing experiences to work hand-in-hand with professionals in their field, apply skills and knowledge they gained at Lakehead University, and share their culture and history with others.”

September 16, 2021 – Thunder Bay, Ont.

Students with the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board will have a greater chance of attending university thanks to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with Lakehead University today, Thursday, Sept. 16.

Current and future Grade 4 students from Sioux Mountain Public School in Sioux Lookout who are eligible will now have the opportunity to enroll in Lakehead University’s Achievement Program. Students who are eligible to participate (those facing barriers to postsecondary education) will attend special on-campus programming at the University and meet certain criteria to earn financial support toward their first year of tuition at Lakehead University.

The Honourable Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities, attended the signing event on Lakehead University’s Thunder Bay campus.

“I would like to congratulate Lakehead University and the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board on this innovative program,” said Dunlop. “When postsecondary institutions and local partners work together, they find unique ways to help learners realize their potential and contribute to building a strong community.”

Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson signed the MOU with Sherri-Lynne Pharand, Director of Education at the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.

“The Achievement Program gives young people who normally face barriers to postsecondary education the opportunity to realize their dreams,” McPherson said.

“This program encourages students to see themselves as Lakehead University graduates at an early age by removing those barriers,” she added.

Lakehead University and Keewatin-Patricia District School Board celebrate the signing of an MOULakehead introduced the program in 2011 to help students obtain a postsecondary education at the University. Eligible participants enrol in Grade 4 and continue with the program until Grade 12, with annual opportunities to earn financial assistance by completing specific requirements at their school, in their community, and at Lakehead University.

“The signing of this MOU is an exciting milestone that will offer exceptional opportunities to our students, allowing them to see themselves as university students of the future,” Pharand said.

“Eligible students at Sioux Mountain Public School will be supported all the way through their journey, beginning in Grade 4, including opportunities for campus and career exploration days, visits from the exceptional program staff at Lakehead University, and access to mentors once the students transition to high school.

“We are proud to partner with Lakehead University to offer these opportunities to families at Sioux Mountain Public School and look forward to expanding the program to other KPDSB schools in the future,” she said.

At the end of the nine years, the accrued value of each student’s financial support will help fund their first year at Lakehead University. Lakehead provides additional spots each year, based on available funding, for eligible students to enrol.

Lakehead University in Top 100 of Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for second time

THE image

April 23, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

For the second year in a row, Lakehead University has placed in the top 100 of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings measure the societal impact of universities by evaluating an institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The rankings measure the impact universities make to the world in the areas of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

Lakehead finished 99th out of 1,115 universities from around the world, based on its performance in meeting the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead’s President and Vice-Chancellor, said she was proud that Lakehead ranked so highly for the second year in a row.

“We’re excited that Lakehead remained in the top 100 even with nearly 350 more universities being included in this year’s ranking as compared to last year,” Dr. McPherson said.

Lakehead is the only primarily undergraduate university in Canada that participated in the 2021 Impact Rankings and one of only 26 universities from North America to be included in the top 100. The University was among just 260 universities from around the world that qualified to participate in all 17 SDGs.

Ranking ahead of several top comprehensive and research-intensive Canadian universities, Lakehead scored highly across many SDGs, including a top 10 ranking in SDG 15: Life on Land.

The Life on Land SDG evaluates how universities support land ecosystems through education and action, how they contribute to sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and how they halt biodiversity loss by measuring their research on land ecosystems.

This year’s top 10 spot in SDG 15 recognizes the work of Lakehead researchers on life on land, as well as education about, and support for, land ecosystems. Lakehead’s policies and procedures relating to land-sensitive waste disposal, such as its commitment to reducing plastic waste on campus, contributed to its top 10 ranking.

Lakehead also scored highly on other metrics, including a top 20 ranking in Life Below Water, a top 30 ranking in No Poverty and Zero Hunger, and a top 40 ranking for Reduced Inequalities and Clean Water and Sanitation.

“To be in the top 100 globally – and top 40 on a number of goals – demonstrates the significant work accomplished by Lakehead students, faculty, and staff to contribute to solving the grand challenges facing the world today through education, research and partnerships,” added Dr. McPherson. “It also shows what we already know – that Lakehead offers one of the best educational experiences in the world.”

Dr. David Barnett, Lakehead’s Provost and Vice-President (Academic), agreed.

“This ranking is also due to Lakehead University’s longstanding commitment to Indigenous learners and communities, which helps us succeed and lead with regards to sustainability and social justice,” Dr. Barnett said.

“As our University community continues to make these SDGs a priority, we once again see how Lakehead is world-class. Students, faculty, staff and alumni should be proud of this exceptional accomplishment.”

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings capture qualifying universities’ impact on society and align with commitments in Lakehead’s Strategic and Academic Plans.

Times Higher Education ranks Lakehead University among world’s top universities

September 16, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

For the third year in a row, Lakehead University has been included in the top half of the Times Higher Education’s list of the best universities from around the world.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022 has Lakehead University in the 801-1,000 category out of more than 1,600 universities from 99 countries.

Over 2,100 universities participated in the world rankings this year, with more than 1,660 universities meeting the requirements to be included in the final rankings. This is the third year that Lakehead University has participated in the World University Rankings.

In this year’s rankings, Lakehead ranked second among Canada’s primarily undergraduate universities and second among Ontario’s primarily undergraduate universities. Lakehead University also ranked in the same bracket as a number of Canadian universities, and ranked above the worldwide median in the areas of research and international outlook.

“Research excellence is an important component of the THE ranking system,” said Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Vice-President, Research and Innovation. “Lakehead University performs very well in this category and we continue to be above the international median in the quality and impact of our research.”

In terms of Lakehead’s position in the area of international outlook, James Aldridge, Vice-Provost, International, said this ranking recognizes the efforts Lakehead has made toward internationalization of the University.

“This work was done by developing global perspectives through student mobility programs, through promoting cultural intelligence inside and outside the classroom, and by continuing to grow and develop international collaborations, partnerships and our international student population,” Aldridge said. “In 2021, Lakehead was the university of choice for over 1,300 international undergraduate and graduate students from more than 70 countries.”

In addition to the world rankings, THE also releases a series of comparative subject rankings throughout the fall. In the first release of the 2022 World University Rankings by Subject, Lakehead was ranked in the top third of universities around the world in the discipline of Physical Sciences, which includes mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, and environmental and earth sciences. Lakehead was also identified as one of the leading universities in the world in the disciplines of Life Sciences (agriculture and forestry, biological science and sports science) and Clinical and Health, and the top ranked Canadian university in these disciplines with less than 10,000 students.

Other subject rankings to be announced later this year include engineering, computer science, social sciences, business and economics, education, arts and humanities, and law.

“Thank you to everyone who helped Lakehead University achieve a strong ranking among Times Higher Education’s list of top universities from around the globe,” said Dr. Moira McPherson, President and Vice-Chancellor.

“This ranking acknowledges Lakehead’s commitment to delivering high quality programs, fostering excellence in research and scholarly work, and providing unique and transformative learning experiences that put our graduates on the path to success,” McPherson added.

The World University Rankings measure research-intensive universities performance across their core missions: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume and reputation); citations (research influence); industry income (knowledge transfer); and international outlook (staff, students and research).

It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons.
