Lakehead University professors receiving $470k from SSHRC for important research

October 29, 2021 – Orillia and Thunder Bay, Ont.

Seven professors at Lakehead University are receiving a total of more than $470,000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to fund their important research projects.

Dr. Daniel Krupp, Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakehead Orillia, is receiving an Insight grant of more than $94,000 to examine inequality and competition.

Dr. Daniel Krupp

“Our research finds that local competition amplifies the effect of inequality on conflict, and that this interaction may occur as a consequence of relative deprivation,” Dr. Krupp said.

“This means that people who are in direct competition with each other will feel greater relative deprivation than those who are competing with a broader swath of the population.”

Dr. Krupp and his team hypothesize that competition – not similarity or fairness – drives relative deprivation.

This project will test their hypothesis by building a series of mathematical models to formalize the effects of inequality, the scale of competition, and similarity on the evolution of conflict.

“With these models, we can study the ways in which similarity foments conflict when it is associated with kinship and the extent of local competition,” Dr. Krupp said.

This research will help bring understanding to the psychology of relative deprivation and be of interest to social scientists, civil servants, and members of the public.

Dr. Lida Fan

Dr. Lida Fan, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Lakehead Thunder Bay, is receiving an Insight Development grant of more than $63,000 to study the Prospect of Upward Mobility hypothesis. This hypothesis assumes that low-income people tolerate inequality in wealthy countries like the US and Canada because of the hope that they, or their offspring, may make it up the income ladder.

“In this research we will cast doubt on the Prospect of Upward Mobility theory by exploring alternative explanations within the Canadian context,” Dr. Fan said.

“The purpose of this inquiry is to reveal whether individuals see upward mobility as unrealistic in many instances, or they see the barriers of upward mobility and limited choices available but have given up the chance to challenge the situation.”

The results of this study may contribute to the understanding of public tolerance toward inequality and redistribution, and offer new information about a comprehensive set of determinants of public attitudes towards inequality in the contemporary Canadian context.

Dr. Ellen Field, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead Orillia, is receiving an Insight Development grant of more than $52,000 to study climate change education practice in Ontario and policy in Canada.

Dr. Ellen Field

“In schools across Canada, teachers decide how they will integrate, discuss, or avoid climate change education on a daily basis,” Dr. Field said, adding that there can be ramifications with how teachers decide to discuss it in class.

Focusing on comprehensive national data on climate change education, this research will provide further depth and context by monitoring the policies of jurisdictional climate change education, such as within the Ministries of Education and school boards across Canada.

Dr. Field and her team, Dr. Paul Berger from Lakehead and Dr. Andrea Drewes from Rider University, will also examine teachers’ personal and professional beliefs on climate change education and how those views inform their decisions about the inclusion/exclusion of climate change content and how they deliver that content.

Researchers will also profile case studies of transformative and transgressive climate change education in Ontario schools.

This research will provide a more holistic picture of teacher practice that accounts for teachers’ beliefs and factors that teachers identify as influencing their integration, or lack of integration, of climate change education. It will also document how climate change education is already occurring in transformative ways in some pockets.

“This will inform policy responses and professional development directions. The research will contribute to scholarship in the emerging field of climate change education internationally and nationally through academic scholarly contributions,” Dr. Field said.

This study will support two graduate assistants completing MEd programs for the full duration of the research. Dr. Field will support the students as full members of the research team and they will participate in all stages of the project.

Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Lakehead’s Vice-President, Research and Innovation congratulated each of the researchers and thanked SSHRC for funding these import projects.

“These Insight grants will do exactly what they are intended to do – provide insight into important questions that range from environmental education to inequality to understanding stress for post-secondary students, and everything in between.”

The Research Support Fund is a federal funding program for post-secondary institutions in Canada to support some of the costs associated with managing research funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

In 2020/21, Lakehead University received nearly $2 million in assistance from the Research Support Fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

Dr. Dimiter Alexandrov

October 18, 2021 – Thunder Bay, Ont.

A Lakehead University professor has published experimental research that suggests a potential new sustainable energy source could be generated using non-radioactive nuclear fusion.

Dr. Dimiter Alexandrov’s research paper, Low Energy Nuclear Fusion Reactions in Solids: Experiments, was published in the International Journal of Energy Research in June 2021.

Professor Alexandrov is the head of Lakehead’s Semiconductor Research Laboratory and teaches in Electrical Engineering. He said it might be possible to develop the technology into prototypes for real-world applications, which could help address climate change by introducing an alternative green energy source to replace fossil fuels.

“This could be a major achievement in the search for a truly sustainable energy source that does not produce carbon emissions or any radioactive waste,” Dr. Alexandrov said.

“This non-radioactive nuclear fusion technology has enormous potential as we seek clean, renewable energy solutions to replace fossil fuels.”

Replicable experiments conducted by Professor Alexandrov confirm that nuclear energy is released in the interaction of deuterium, a widely available non-radioactive hydrogen isotope, with solid matter as the recent experiments carried out show significant energy release.

“Unlike other nuclear energy sources, this technology would not generate any radioactivity or produce radioactive waste. It is scalable and has the potential to be deployed in remote communities here in Canada and across the world, and in mobile locations on land, sea, and even in space,” said Dr. Alexandrov.

Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Lakehead’s Vice-President, Research and Innovation, congratulated Dr. Alexandrov on this exciting publication.

“The search for nuclear fusion energy is one of the most significant research areas currently underway, and this experimental work is revealing some very interesting results,” Dr. Dean said.

Region is in spotlight at upcoming palliative care online summit

This year’s Northwestern Ontario Palliative Care Online Summit, which will be on Thursday, Oct. 28, highlights the strength and resilience of the Thunder Bay region’s palliative care professionals in adapting to devastating situations and continuing to provide high-quality care.

Coordinated by the Centre for Education and Research on Aging & Health (CERAH), Lakehead University, the summit will spotlight the approaches that regional health-care providers have taken to continue delivering a high standard of palliative care to the people of Northwestern Ontario during these challenging times.

Palliative care health-care providers have been through many changes in health-care delivery during the pandemic and in many cases, the situations they’ve faced have been especially difficult. For example, visitation restrictions have caused much moral, ethical and emotional distress to health-care workers, patients and their families, and have resulted in many people dying without loved ones by their side.

“Like many other areas, Northwestern Ontario health-care providers have been challenged by COVID-19,” said Stephanie Hendrickson, Summit coordinator.

“While the pandemic has certainly highlighted gaps in our system, we are grateful for the resiliency of our health-care providers who have continued to provide the high level of care we have come to expect. Moving forward, we will continue to support our health-care providers through education and our Summit is key to this,” she said.

“We will be highlighting how our region has continued to build effective approaches to identifying and supporting people who would benefit  from a palliative approach to care despite these barriers to care.”

Dr. Amy Montour from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, a palliative-care physician, will help set the stage, highlighting how health-care workers can recover and even thrive and grow together as demonstrated by the continued work to improve access to high-quality, culturally safer palliative care despite the pandemic.

Dr. Montour will also explain the Two-Eyed Seeing approach to palliative care for Indigenous people, and how health-care workers can incorporate a trauma-informed perspective to the practice of palliative care.

Regional health-care providers from Kenora, Nipigon, Manitouwadge, and Thunder Bay will discuss achievements and developments in the palliative care delivered in Northwestern Ontario – such as the implementation of Indigenous Transition Facilitators throughout the region, which have helped patients and their families receive the sensitive and responsive support they need at the palliative and end-of-life phases in their illness journey.

Health-care providers, administrators, educators, volunteers, and students are invited to attend. This virtual event takes place on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 9 am to 5 pm (EDT). Cost is $50 per person and the deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 18.

This event is organized by CERAH and the 2021 Northwestern Ontario Palliative Care Online Summit Committee, made up of health-care organizations from Thunder Bay and the region. For more information, visit the Summit website at https://pheedloop.com/nwopcsummit/site/home/

Maclean’s ranks Lakehead University second in Ontario among primarily undergraduate universities

October 8, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

Maclean’s has once again included Lakehead University among Canada’s top 10 primarily undergraduate universities in the magazine’s 2022 University Rankings.

Lakehead ranked second overall among Ontario universities in its category, and eighth out of 19 primarily undergraduate universities from across Canada.

“At Lakehead University we provide a transformative university experience, grounded in exceptional scholarship and unique student potential,” said Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson.

“These rankings recognize Lakehead’s success in creating future leaders who support the economic, social and cultural resilience of Northwestern Ontario and Simcoe County. At Lakehead University we are committed to supporting student success by helping students realize their potential and achieve their career goals,” Dr. McPherson explained.

This year, Maclean’s University Rankings place Lakehead first in Ontario in student awards (tied), faculty awards, and total library acquisitions; second for highest quality, developing the leaders of tomorrow, social sciences and humanities grants, scholarships and bursaries, operating budget, and library expenses; and third for most innovative, student/faculty ratio, total research dollars, medical/science grants, and reputation.

Maclean’s also found that Lakehead has the lowest class sizes in first- and second-year classes among all Ontario universities.

Dr. McPherson added that Lakehead’s placement in the Maclean’s Rankings comes on the heels of last month’s revelation that Lakehead has been included in the top half of the Times Higher Education’s list of the best universities around the world for the third year in a row, and a leading university in specific disciplines. Read more here.

Maclean’s annual rankings are just one way potential students can learn more about the Lakehead University experience. Potential students can also learn more about Lakehead University by registering for the virtual open house happening on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 10 am–2 pm (EST).
