More CFI Grants for Lakehead University Researchers:Multi-Data Convergence Lab One of Few to Host, Analyze Educational Data

Thunder Bay, ON (July 4, 2007) --The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced today that it has awarded $42, 499 to a team of Lakehead University researchers to support the establishment of a laboratory that has the technological capacity to host and analyze educational data in a manner that is not available in most research settings.
The research to be conducted will be led by Principal Investigator Dr. Alex Lawson and co-investigators Dr. Lisa Korteweg and Dr. Christina van Barneveld. All are with LakeheadUniversity's Faculty of Education. The lab will be housed in the Faculty of Education, in a new research space which was specifically designed and built to host a high-technology, high-security lab.

The Multi-Data Convergence Laboratory will fill the need to conduct and merge educational research at the macro and micro levels. Specifically, the lab would have the capacity to host and analyze large-scale, secure data sets such as the provincial Education Quality Assurance Office's (EQAO) provincial achievement data, School Achievement Indicators Program (SAIP) data, the Ministry of Education's MISA (Managing Information on School Assessment) data, or Census data.

At the micro level the Laboratory has the capacity to collect longitudinal multimedia data (video, photo, audio, and scanned documents) from the field ( Ontario schools) on a sample of the population assessed in these large-scale data sets. The data would include ongoing researcher documentation of students in assessment interviews, or in classroom situations as well as student-produced documentation over time. The multimedia data (video, photos, transcript text) offers a level of depth of analysis and validity unavailable in other medium. The analysis of the intersection of longitudinal multimedia data with large-scale data sets (of the same students), has rarely been achieved in either Canada or the U.S., despite recent calls to do so. At present, neither Lakehead nor other regional research centres offer the necessary hardware, or access, to academic expertise housed in one lab.

Dr. Rui Wang, Vice President Research, LakeheadUniversity, says: "The lab would allow us to pursue leading-edge research on a number of fundamental questions regarding our educational system. We will be able to gather and analyze highly detailed, longitudinal qualitative data in conjunction with large-scale quantitative data to determine whether various instructional practices are having their intended impact in areas such as mathematics education and culturally responsive education."

Dr. Alex Lawson adds: "We will be able to contribute to determining whether large-scale testing practices are a valid assessment of students' abilities. We hope o ur research findings will influence the direction of mathematics education, education for Aboriginal students, and large-scale educational assessment design and implementation across Canada --- all areas vital to the continued educational capacity, achievement, and well-being of our students. We also expect our work to produce highly trained Canadian personnel in multi-methods educational research. "

LakeheadUniversity's award is part of a $22-million fund awarded by CFI under the Leaders Opportunities Fund, an ongoing program designed to assist Canadian universities in attracting and retaining outstanding faculty members and researchers.

New Program Offers Enhanced Opportunities for University

--- First-Generation, Aboriginal Students, and Others Benefit

(June 29, 2007, Thunder Bay, ON) Dr. Fred Gilbert, President of Lakehead University, today announced a special opportunity that will be available at Lakehead this fall. The new program called SAGE - a gateway to education, has been developed to help three distinct groups of students with the transition to university - new high school graduates, mature students, and Aboriginal students.

Mature Students or Students Missing a Science or Math Course

According to Dr. Gilbert, "SAGE benefits three distinct groups of students. One group comprises students who are missing a specific science or math course required to get into a science-based program. Under SAGE, these students will be able to study that science or math course at the same time they are completing other aspects of their degree. This may be especially useful for mature students and transfer students who have completed a College diploma." Dr. Gilbert emphasizes, "There are lots of opportunities for people with science-based degrees in growth areas like geology and mining, water resources, engineering, and the new areas of value-added forest products, in addition to the health care professions. Many people who have worked in the industrial sector have the skills needed to move into these areas, but they need the formal coursework to prepare for success. With SAGE, Lakehead University provides courses that will give access to higher-paying science-based careers."

New High School Graduates

Another group who will benefit from SAGE are the so-called "cusp" students. According to Dr. Gilbert, "There are students who graduate from Grade 12 who may lack a particular prerequisite to the program they're interested in, or their final high school grades may be just below the required 70%. SAGE will help those students by providing the coursework needed, along with enriched academic support and services, to enable them to come to university."

Dr. Gilbert notes that students still need to have 6 Grade 12 U or M courses to get into university in Ontario, but along with the regular courses, SAGE students will take a course in study and success skills, and will work with an academic advisor to help them through the transition.

Aboriginal Students

In addition to the above, building on the success of last year's redesigned Native Access Program at Lakehead University, Aboriginal students who are admitted as mature students to SAGE will be able to study as a group, a "cohort" of students who will have a peer tutor in their classes in science, English, math, indigenous learning, and study skills. At the end of the year, they will continue their studies within a degree program, with several academic credits already in place.

Access and Success

"For several years running, Lakehead has been recognized nationally as the #1 university in terms of value-added," said Dr. Laurie Hayes, Vice President Academic and Provost. "This reflects a superior level of both access and success for our students. This contribution to higher education was recognized this year by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), which has awarded Lakehead $400,000 to enhance transitional courses and services, especially for 'first generation' students, that is, students whose parents did not go to college or university." Dr. Hayes added that "SAGE is a unique program developed by Lakehead University; it builds on the success of Lakehead University's existing access and transition programs, and enrichment of its student development and advising services. Lakehead is regarded as a leader in the area of access and success. Students will receive special assistance in terms of becoming effective learners, with enriched academic advising. They will also be able to pick up the courses they need to follow their dreams."

Individuals interested in the SAGE program for this academic year or next should contact Lakehead University Admissions at 807.343-8500 or admissions@lakeheadu.ca.
Students interested in the Native Access Program should contact Gloria Hendrick-Laliberté at (807) 346-7709, or ghendrick@lakeheadu.ca

Media: Dr. Gilbert may be interviewed by calling 807.343-8200 directly, or the Office of Communications at 807.343-8177 or 807.343-8372.

Lowly Barbed Wire Stars in Film - Historian Secures Funding for Documentary on Barbed Wire

(Thunder Bay - June 25, 2007) Professor Ron Harpelle of the Department of History has secured a total of $50,000 from two funding agencies for the production of a documentary film on barbed wire. The film's working title is Strands: Barbed Wire and the Control of People and Spaces.
Dr. Harpelle obtained $5,000 in the form of a Northern Arts Grant from the Ontario Arts Council, and $45,000 in the form of a Production Grant from the Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund (CIFVF).
"This is a fund set up by the federal government to support non-theatrical film and video projects. CIFVF is unique because it funds artists for the sake of art, not for television sales," says Dr. Harpelle. He was previously awarded CIFVF grants to produce Banana Split, an award-winning documentary film about Canada's favorite fruit, and Dorothea Mitchell: A Reel Pioneer, a documentary about the first woman in Canada to make independent films.
"With Strands, I will once again make a film that presents an historical approach to something we take for granted. Barbed wire is so ubiquitous and is used to keep people and things both inside or outside. It can have positive or negative connotations. But none of us ever really thinks about the origin of barbed wire and how it evolved. I hope to make a film like Banana Split that will have a good shelf life --- one that changes the way people see an everyday object."
Graduate students will be involved in the research portion of the project.
Dr. Harpelle applied to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for a Research/Creation Grant for this project but was unsuccessful. "Faced with having to put the project aside or look for funding outside of academic funding sources, I chose to continue my quest for funding in order to realize my research objectives," says Dr. Harpelle. "In the Humanities we sometimes have to be creative if we are to get the funding we need for our research because there aren't too many places to go for support."
Filming for Strands: Barbed Wire and the Control of People and Spaces has already started and will continue in the fall or next spring, depending on locations.
Ron Harpelle teaches Latin American and Caribbean History at Lakehead University and he has a special interest in international development. His current research is on the social history of the West Indian diaspora to Central America between 1850 and 1950, and focuses on the struggles for recognition and acceptance of these people during the first half of the 20th century. Dr. Ron Harpelle and Dr. Bruce Muirhead of the University of Waterloo have recently been commissioned by the International Development Research Centre to write an intellectual history of the Centre, and they are also working with award-winning director Kelly Saxberg on a six-part documentary film series on Canada's role in international development.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Subject of Serious Study

(Thunder Bay - June 22, 2007) A new book by Lakehead professors J. Michael Richardson and J. Douglas Rabb makes it easy and fun to delve into complex philosophic topics such as existentialism, ethics, and moral choices. Their book, entitled The Existential Joss Whedon: Evil and Human Freedom in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," and "Serenity," examines the major works of contemporary American television and film screenwriter Joss Whedon.
J. Michael Richardson, Professor of English, and J. Douglas Rabb, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, argue that TV and screen writer Joss Whedon is part of an existentialist tradition that stretches back from Jean-Paul Sartre through Fyodor Dostoevsky.
Both Whedon and Dostoevsky say that in each and every one of us "a demon lies hidden." Whedon personifies these demons and has them wandering about and causing havoc. Dostoevsky treats the subject only slightly more seriously.
Chapters cover such topics as Russian existentialism and vampire slayage; moral choices; ethics; faith and bad faith; constructing reality through existential choice; some limitations of science and technology; love and self-sacrifice; love, witchcraft, and vengeance; soul mates and moral responsibility; love and moral choice; forms of freedom; and Whedon as moral philosopher.
"It is important to analyse the work of Whedon because he deals with important moral, psychological, and philosophical issues, using a narrative and metaphorical method rather than more thorny abstractions," says Richardson, "This allows him to speak to the youth of today directly, in a language they can quickly grasp. Moreover, he is one of the earliest forces in American TV to try to create a strong and independent female hero with whom the males on the show can work comfortably."
What can those who are not familiar with Buffy gain by reading the book?
"Among other things, we hope, a sense of how narrative can be used to explore and clarify complex ethical issues. In short, there is much more going on than just silly fantasy stories for kids. With any luck, readers can also learn something about existentialism. It is not an accident, by the way, that the major 20th century existentialist (and the one Whedon most admires), Jean-Paul Sartre, frequently turns to narrative to explain his more difficult concepts, such as "Bad Faith" and choosing to be the chosen one.
"I hope that those who read the book enjoy it, and if they are not Whedon fans, they give Buffy, Angel, Firefly, or Serenity a chance. And if they are fans that our book might encourage a slightly different way of regarding the shows."
Award Nomination --The Existential Joss Whedon has recently been nominated for the Long Mr. Pointy Award. The Mr. Pointy Awards are given by Slayage: The Online International Journal of Buffy Studies for the year's best work in Buffy Studies Scholarship. The Short Mr. Pointy Award is given for the best journal article, while the Long Mr. Pointy Award is presented for the best book. The complete list of nominees can be seen at http://slayageonline.com
Book Launch ¬-- The Existential Joss Whedon is published by McFarland & Company, Inc. Publishers, and is available for purchase at a cost of $42 at the Lakehead University Alumni Bookstore. A book launch will take place on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, from 7 - 11 p.m., at the Prince Arthur Hotel in Thunder Bay in Salon E (second floor). Everyone is welcome.

Study on New Omega-3 Supplement Looks at Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children

(June 21, 2007, Thunder Bay, ON) Researchers at Lakehead University are studying the link between Eye Q, a new Omega-3 fatty acid supplement, and its effects on ADHD. The first clinical trial will be conducted by the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Psychology at Lakehead University , and facilitated by the Children's Centre Thunder Bay.
The only Canadian study of its kind, the trial is being led by researchers Dr. Brian Ross, Associate Professor of Neuropharmacology at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM); Dr. Ed Rawana, Research Director at Lakehead University, site of the Centre of Excellence for Children and Adolescents with Special Needs (CECASN) and Assistant Professor of Psychology; and Jennifer Seguin, who is the Study Coordinator and is completing her Master's of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology.

"This research is specifically interesting for two reasons: this supplement is not yet marketed in Canada , and this is the first clinical trial that has taken place at Lakehead University ," says Dr. Rawana.

The purpose of the study is to test Eye Q (a mixture of fish and plant-derived lipids), which will be measured for its effectiveness at reducing attention difficulties.

"This is not just an ordinary Omega-3 supplement that you can buy over the counter. Eye Q
contains a number of specific components that may have the potential to work together to produce noticeable changes in brain function and behavior," says Dr. Ross.
