New Forensic Summer Camp for Budding Crime Scene Investigators

(July 23 " Thunder Bay, ON)

Lakehead's Department of Anthropology has teamed up with Superior Science to offer grade 5-9 children the chance to become crime scene investigators (CSI's) at a hands-on forensic camp. During these one-week camps, young investigative minds apply real forensic techniques, such as fingerprinting, DNA analysis, forensic odontology, ballistics and forensic entomology to solve age-appropriate crime scenes.

"This is a cool way to tap into children's natural curiosity and introduce them to fascinating career opportunities," explains Lakehead Anthropology Chair, Dr. Carney Matheson, who approached Superior Science with the idea of organizing the program and then applied his skills as a forensic anthropologist to create the camp's learning modules. He adds, "Anthropologists and criminal forensic scientists use the same techniques to discover the clues hidden in blood, teeth and bones, so I thought this would be an intriguing way to expose children to the mysteries of forensic science."

"Forensics is such an exciting and relevant field, and we are so pleased to have this collaboration with Lakehead's Anthropology department," says Superior Science Co-Director, Tyler Drawson. "These camps give youth in the Thunder Bay area access to passionate, experienced forensic scientists from Lakehead's Department of Anthropology, Thunder Bay law enforcement and other forensic communities."

Superior Science is a student-run, non-profit program based at Lakehead University that sparks children's interests in science, engineering and technology through fun, hands-on activities. The three, one-week forensic camps run July 23-July 27, August 7-10 and August 20-24.
