Master of Public Health with Specialization in Gerontology

Master of Public Health with Specialization in Gerontology program may be completed through Distance Education on a Flexible full-time or Full-time basis. Those wishing to complete the Master of Public Health program on campus may apply to the full-time on-campus program. 

• Full-time (2 years / 6 terms) students must attend the daytime classes
• Flexible Full-time (minimum 3 years / 9 terms) students must attend the evening classes
  
  

For those studying at a distance, the program is delivered using a combination of Zoom videoconferencing technology for real-time scheduled classes, and of Desire2Learn (D2L), a secure password-protected learning environment (e.g., for course resources, e-mail, and online discussions). The connectivity using Zoom allows students to have direct audio and visual contact with the course instructor and with other graduate students during class time and while working together on shared course assignments. In some classes, break-out sessions are structured into the course so that students have both large-and small-group learning experiences.

Specializations in the MPH and MHSc programs include a defined collection of courses taken from specific areas of study that complement the overall degree requirements. Note: The Specialization will be referenced on the transcript.

Specialization Requirements

All students in the Master of Public Health program with Specialization in Gerontology must complete a total of 6 full-course equivalents (FCEs), of which 3.5 FCEs are required core courses, 1.0 FCEs are elective courses, and 1.5 FCEs consist of a 400-hour Practicum related to Gerontology. These are fully described in the Academic Calendar.

Students in the Gerontology Specialization must take two specific courses (0.5 FCE each for a total of 1.0 FCE) as electives (GERO 5010: Current Issues in Gerontology and GERO 5710: Interdisciplinary Theories in Gerontology) and complete their 400-hour practicum in an area related to Gerontology.

Note that students who elect to deviate from the Program Plan are responsible for ensuring that they meet all program requirements in a timely fashion.

Full-time students must attend the daytime sections and complete all requirements and within 6 terms (2 years). 

Flexible full-time students must attend the evening sections and complete all requirements at a distance and within 12 terms (4 years), but no quicker than 9 terms (3 years).
