Psychology

Psychology is both the science and profession that studies human thought, emotion, and behaviour. Throughout your Psychology degree you will gain insight into how individuals are influenced by environmental and biological factors, and how abnormalities can change one's psychological function.

You will have the opportunity to study the breadth of the discipline's core areas and subfields including:

  • Biological
  • Cognitive-Affective
  • Individual
  • Social
  • Abnormal
  • Developmental

Our multidisciplinary approach to Psychology allows you to follow either an Arts or Science stream, depending on your academic interests. However, all students graduate the program with the objective tools to develop theories, test them through scientific experimentation, and develop new knowledge through research methods.

Many of our faculty are practicing clinical psychologists with a range of expertise such as addiction, eating disorders, and depression. All of our faculty members bring a wealth of real-world experience to our courses and make it possible to immerse students in research opportunities from first year onward.

The Lakehead Advantage

The breadth of study within our Psychology programs is what sets us apart. As a Psychology student you will gain at least one credit of exposure to all elements of the discipline throughout your undergraduate degree. You will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects starting in first year, allowing you to get a glimpse into the professional application of Psychology very early on.

Starting in second year, you can choose to take Research Opportunity and/or Directed Reading courses under the guidance and direction of a Psychology professor. These courses are intended to enhance your in-class, theoretical learning with hands-on experience in a subfield. This experience provides significant professional advantages whether you plan to focus on research or clinical studies after graduation.

Our faculty is heavily involved in the industry and the community facilitating helpful job and volunteer positions, research opportunities, and other ways to obtain practical experience. Additionally our graduate students are always available for those wanting to perfect their studying, writing, and/or test taking skills.
