Lakehead’s final SOS lecture explores how urban ecosystems affect the quality of our water

(August 14, 2013 – Orillia, ON)

Lakehead University’s “Summer of Sustainability” (SOS) series concludes with a final lecture identifying the role of urban ecosystems in preserving the quality of our water. This eye-opening presentation takes place on Tuesday, August 20 at 7 pm at Lakehead Orillia’s University Avenue campus.

Dr. Andrea Kirkwood, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), will present her recent research on storm water ponds and urban creeks, highlighting their ecological integrity and role in source water protection.

In Canada, 81% of the population lives in urban areas and this number is only expected to rise. Due to high population density and intensive land modification, urban regions are typically thought of as degraded environments and consequently their value has been ignored.

“As a result of mounting concerns over source water protection, both the impacts — and contributions — of urban ecosystems must be considered,” explains Dr. Kirkwood. Andrea Kirkwood

“Participants can expect an in-depth discussion on how we have been influencing the quality of our source waters without even knowing it,” said SOS series organizer Dr. Thamara Laredo of Lakehead Orillia. “It will be a great lecture to end the summer series!"

The SOS public lecture series is free and open to the public. For further information, visit www.lakeheadu.ca or contact series organizer, Dr. Thamara Laredo at 705-330-4008, ext. 2645 or tlaredo1@lakeheadu.ca.

New students get set to “Experience Lakehead” at Orientation 2013

August 28, 2013 – Orillia, ON

Lakehead University Orillia launches the new academic year with an Orientation schedule that is sure to impress. Orientation 2013: Experience Lakehead will introduce new students to university life from September 6 to 8, following residence move-in on Thursday, September 5.

Over 600 new students will begin studies at Lakehead Orillia this fall, including first-year students and one-year professional education program students. Over 200 students will be living on campus in residence.

“Orientation allows students to gain an understanding of the University environment and the support systems that are available to them,” said Lakehead Orillia Acting Dean Dr. Herman van den Berg. “The aim is to help students be prepared to start their academic year with confidence.”

During the three-day Orientation, students will take part in a variety of social events, teambuilding activities, and many opportunities to connect with fellow students, staff, and faculty. By the end of the weekend, students will have a better sense of their new community and what life and learning at Lakehead is all about.

Orientation activities are led by a team of upper-year students who have been trained in how to guide new students.

“Our leaders attend a three-day training retreat where they participate in workshops, teambuilding, and leadership activities to learn how to minimize the anxiety and concerns that are common among first-year students,” said Katie Fraser, Lakehead staff member and co-chair of the Orientation Planning Committee.

The 2013 Orientation kicks off on Friday, September 6 with a buffet breakfast where students will be welcomed by Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson. Students will then head downtown (Orillia) to explore their new community. Many local restaurants are offering a “Loonie Lunch” deal for the new students.

On Saturday, the highlight will be a barbeque and EXPO beginning with a “Cheer Off” challenge, featuring a human formation of the letters “L” and “U”. The EXPO will introduce students to campus and community groups, showcasing opportunities to volunteer or get involved with recreation and athletic activities. The day’s activities will wind up in Midland, where students will climb aboard the Miss Midland for a boat cruise, complete with food, fun, music and dancing.

On Sunday, the final day of Orientation, students will experience the ultimate school spirit event. Following a corn roast and pep rally, students will head over to Rotary Place for the second annual Orientation Cup. The Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team will face off against their cross-town rivals, the Georgian Grizzlies, in hopes of defending their 2012 title.

“Without the consistent support of the community, we could not have provided our new students with such a fantastic Orientation 2013,” said Fraser. “The community has been there every step of the way and has helped make our Orientation events a big hit with students.”

Canadian Semiconductor Conference will be held in Thunder Bay

Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013 – Thunder Bay, ON

The 16th Canadian Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference (CSSTC 2013) will attract more than 100 professors, graduate students, researchers and industry representatives to Thunder Bay next week.

Hosted by Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI), CSSTC 2013 brings together the brightest Canadian minds from universities, research institutions and industries to discuss the latest semiconductor research.

This is the first time the Conference has been held in Thunder Bay. It will be at the Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel & Conference Centre from Monday, Aug. 12 to Friday, Aug. 16, 2013.

“The fact that the Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference is being held in Thunder Bay shows that TBRRI and Lakehead University are doing excellent research into semiconductors and how the technology can further the design of semiconductor devices,” said Dr. Dimiter Alexandrov, an Electrical Engineering Professor at Lakehead who is the head of the University’s Semiconductor Research Lab and conference co-chair.

“The conference will bring new, high tech commercial opportunities to the Thunder Bay region, such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (LEDs) and semiconductor lasers,” said Dr. Alexandrov, who has spent nearly 30 years researching semiconductors and electronic devices.

Dr. Alla Reznik, a Physics Professor at Lakehead University and TBRRI Scientist and, is also a conference co-chair. In September, 2012, Dr. Reznik received a $1.6 million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to train highly qualified personnel in medical imaging detector technologies.

“This conference not only brings together the best Canadian minds specializing in semiconductor science and technology but also provides an excellent opportunity for young investigators and graduate students to be a part of the Canadian scientific community and talk with accomplished professors, industry partners, and potential employers,” Reznik said.

Dr. Reznik is a Canada Research Chair in Physics of Molecular Imaging and an expert in wide band gap semiconductors. She is working on the application of novel semiconductor materials for x-ray and gamma-ray medical imaging detectors.

“This conference allows TBRRI to further its status on a global research stage and to contribute to the consistent development of a knowledge/research based economy,” said Dr. Roxanne Deslauriers, Acting CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute. “It is a testament to the recent growth of medical research activity here. This conference would not have been held in this region just a few years ago.”

Lakehead University is proud to partner with TBRRI to host the 16th Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference, said Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson.

“Co-hosting this conference shows how far we’ve come in nurturing discovery, supporting innovation and advancing achievement,” Dr. Stevenson said.

Lakehead’s Alumni Signature Tournament Helps Students Live Their Dreams

From left to right, Bill Keeler, Co-chair of the Golf Committee; Winta Desta, Lakehead student athlete; Wolfie; Tom Morris of Wasaya Airways; Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead's Deputy Provost; and Murray Walberg of RBC

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 – Thunder Bay, ON

The RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is a success each year thanks to the support of title sponsor RBC and presenting sponsor Wasaya Airways.

The annual RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament raises funds in order for students to live their dreams by pursuing their post-secondary education.

“Cost should not be a barrier to education,” said Mark Tilbury, Director, Alumni and Community Relations at Lakehead University. “Post-secondary education plays an important role in a person’s future. This support shows that RBC and Wasaya Airways are extremely community-minded and we thank them for that.”

Launched in 1983, the RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament has assisted hundreds of students in pursuit of an education. To mark the 30th year, the goal for the 2013 RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is $50,000, which will help approximately eight to 10 students.

“We at RBC are proud to once again be the title sponsor of this important golf tournament, bringing the community together to support our great university and its students,” said Murray Walberg, RBC’s Regional Vice President for Northwestern Ontario.

“Wasaya Airways is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal youth excellence and continued education. We take pride in playing a role in the growth and development of our future visionaries and leaders,” said Tom Morris, President & CEO of Wasaya Airways.

Winta Desta, a student athlete, benefitted from scholarships and bursaries that let her further her education while playing for Lakehead’s basketball team.

“The scholarships and bursaries I received from Lakehead University enabled me to continue my academic pursuit without having to sacrifice my other loves – athletics and volunteerism – and for that I will be forever grateful,” Desta said.

“The impact that this fundraiser has on students is far grander than most people assume; not only does it help lighten our financial load, but it enables us to dream, and to dream big,” Desta said.

Tilbury thanks all of the participating players and sponsors who make this tournament a success. Lakehead is still accepting players for this tournament and there are also sponsorship opportunities to help reach the $50,000 goal.

The tournament will be on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at Whitewater Golf Club, at 1961 King George’s Park Drive in Rosslyn.

Lakehead University’s Bridge Team Successful at National Competition

Lakehead University's Steel Bridge Team

June 26, 2013 – Thunder Bay, ON

Lakehead University’s Civil Engineering students placed in the top 10 at the 2013 National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Seattle’s University of Washington.

The Lakehead team was one of 49 universities and colleges at the invitation-only competition. Lakehead’s five-member team was invited in March after winning the Mid-West Regional Competition at Iowa State University.

“The steel bridge competition provides students with real engineering experience: planning and design, team work, essential problem solving skills and the opportunity to compete against other schools from Canada, the US and Mexico,” said Raquel Almeida, one of the students on the team.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us through the years. Without their help we wouldn’t have been able to represent Lakehead University and Thunder Bay,” she said.

The team improved their construction time significantly for the national competition, from 49 builder-minutes to 29 builder-minutes.

Faculty Advisor Dr. Tony Gillies said he was impressed with how hard the students worked in the national competition. “They fared extremely well. These students applied their knowledge and their abilities in a very challenging competition and for that they should be proud,” he said.

Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson, congratulated the students on their accomplishment. “We know our graduates leave Lakehead with a top notch education – these students are letting the rest of North America and the world know that, too,” Dr. Stevenson said.

The Lakehead Team is grateful for the many sponsors that made their participation possible, including local unions, consultants, contractors and material suppliers from Thunder Bay and across Canada and the United States.

The team is comprised of Raquel Almeida, Natalie Scalese, Cody Johnston, Randy Roth and Joe Anger with Faculty Advisor Dr. Tony Gillies and technologist support from Conrad Hagstrom and Kailash Bahtia.

Meet the Lakehead Students Riding Across Canada to Build Food Security

Monday, June 17, 2013 – Thunder Bay, ON

Media and the public are invited to meet Adrian Arts and Megan Clark – two Lakehead students who are cycling across Canada to collect non-perishables and money for food banks.

Adrian and Megan will be collecting non-perishable donations at:

Location: Safeway on Dawson Road in Thunder Bay

Date: Sunday, June 23, 2013

Time: 10 am to 4 pm

Here is the original media release:

This summer, two Lakehead University students will cycle coast to coast across Canada, cooperatively organizing 22 food drives along the 10,000 km route.

Under the name FoodRide, the team strives to raise more than $100,000 in food and monetary donations for Canadian food banks. Donations will be distributed between community and campus food banks in the cities hosting the drives.

“We aim to create an open dialogue around food security,” explains FoodRide cyclist Adrian Arts. “Food banks were created as a temporary emergency service in the early 80s and are now a daily necessity to a growing population. As a country we need to re-evaluate how we feed ourselves and where that food comes from.”

The journey begins Thursday, April 25, 2013 in Victoria, BC, and ends with a final food drive in St. John’s, NFLD, on Sunday, Sept. 8.
Approximately 900,000 Canadians relied on access to food banks in an average month in 2011, according to the recent Food Banks Canada report, Hunger Count 2012. Findings of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council’s report from its Special Rapporteur on the right to food (in Canada) suggest that many Canadians report being hungry, but are not eating due to lack of financial means.

The report states that the growing inadequacy of access to safe, healthy food in many parts of Canada brings into question the foundations of Canada’s food security and the path the country is heading down.

The FoodRide team brings action to the issue by cooperatively organizing food drives with community and campus food banks in every province. Although FoodRide will not cycle through the territories, online donations to the cause will be shared with food banks in the territories’ capitals.
