Ontario Genomics is pleased to announce that a new round of Genome Canada’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) is now open.

The GAPP funds public-private research collaborations focused on developing genomics-derived technologies that address opportunities and challenges identified by industry, government, not-for-profits or other “Receptors” of genomics knowledge and tools. The program provides a unique opportunity for Receptor organizations to collaborate with an ’omics researcher, and to leverage their R&D investments with public funding.

SHARCNET is issuing a call for proposals for Dedicated Programming Support Round XIII. For this round, applications are encouraged that satisfy the programme objectives and priority will be given to proposals that meet one or more of the following conditions:

• Propose an innovative project that will leverage the capabilities of the GP3 system, “Graham”, especially GPUs and FPGAs.
• Propose a programme of work that deals with the efficient processing of large, heterogeneous datasets (“big data”) using a variety of data mining, machine learning or other analytics software.

   

Applications are submitted via SHARCNET’s webportal and are due by December 9, 2018 at 11:59 pm EST. Consultation with a SHARCNET HPTC prior to submission is required. Note that users must have a SHARCNET webportal account in order to access the online form.

Due to the current workload of SHARCNET programming staff, only a limited number of proposals are expected to be awarded in this round. For additional information, please refer to the application guidelines. Questions should be addressed to research-support@sharcnet.ca.

BWF’s Innovation in Regulatory Science Awards provide up to $500,000 over five years to academic investigators developing new methodologies or innovative approaches in regulatory science that will ultimately inform the regulatory decisions the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and others make.

These grants are intended to support the further development of significant findings based on the goals originally explored through a funded CCS Innovation Grant. All applications must include details of the significant achievements from the previous grant, specifics on how the proposed work is a logical progression that builds on the previous grant, and the potential of the work to impact cancer.

Budgets awarded may be up to $150,000 per year for up to 3 years, to a maximum of $450,000 per grant.

It is anticipated that approximately 12 grants will be awarded in this competition.

·         Only investigators with a funded Innovation Grant with a project end date between January 1, 2016 and July 31, 2019 are eligible for this program.

·         Note that the Abstract registration phase has been removed. Only Full applications are required for this competition.

·         A special call for breast cancer research is included in this competition. For applicants wishing to be considered under the breast cancer research initiative, a relevance statement is required that explicitly demonstrates how the project is relevant to breast cancer.

Innovation Grants support the highest quality creative problem solving in cancer research. The goal of the Innovation program is to support the development and testing of unconventional concepts and approaches to address problems in cancer research, enhance our understanding of cancer, and generate new approaches to confront the challenges we face in defeating cancer.

Budgets awarded may be up to $100,000 per year and a maximum of $200,000 per grant.

It is anticipated that approximately 22 grants will be awarded in this competition.

Please note the following:

·         There must be no overlap (100% unique aims) with any held or pending application including those at the registration, abstract or Letter of Intent submission stage to any agency as of January 15, 2019. Duplicate applications will not be accepted.

·         Note that the Abstract registration phase has been removed. Only Full applications are required for this competition.

·         A special call for breast cancer research is included in this competition. For applicants wishing to be considered under the breast cancer research initiative, a relevance statement is required that explicitly demonstrates how the project is relevant to breast cancer.

·         Innovative applications with a focus on cancer prevention and survivorship are encouraged.

·         Additional funds may be available from the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation, to support innovative projects focused on the application of complementary and alternative approaches in cancer treatment and control.

About the Research Fund

1. The CAUCE Research Fund is designed to support projects where the outcomes are likely to have direct relevance to and wide applicability within the practice of university continuing education in Canada.

2. The fund is aimed primarily at assisting projects for which other sources of external funding are unavailable, though, in the case of larger projects, it may be used to supplement other sources of funding. The fund may be used to jointly sponsor research with regionally-focused continuing education organizations (such as OCULL or APACUE).
 
3. Because of the limited resources available, grants will normally not exceed $3500, will be confined to applicants from member institutions, and will not be awarded to any applicant who has received a grant from the fund during the past three years. Regarding budgets, up to $700 can be allotted for travel based on an overall request of $3500. This sum should be used for travel in relation to data collection and/or attend the CAUCE conference for the purpose of presenting the project. Preference will be given to requests to attend the CAUCE conference for the purpose of presenting the project. Smaller budgets should reduce the sum asked for travel accordingly.

A maximum annual award allocation will be budgeted by the Secretary-Treasurer and approved by the Executive each year.

4. A grant will not ordinarily be made in support of a project for which the work is also part of the pursuit of an advanced degree with financial sponsorship (scholarships, bursaries). Exceptions may be made for a project that is part of an advanced degree if the study is of particular significance to university-level continuing education and meets all other criteria.

5. Once the successful applicant has been notified, projects must be completed within eighteen months. Research grants will not be made to projects already underway.

The Mitacs-JSPS Summer Program, offered in partnership with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) provides opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to pursue collaborative research in Japan, allowing them to advance their own research while promoting scientific progress in both Japan and Canada.

The call for applications will close on December 5, 2018, at 5 p.m. PT. Results will be communicated in May 2019. Successful applicants will travel to Japan for a period of 10 weeks in summer 2019. Applications are awarded competitively and subject to available funding.
