Seeking early-career researchers with big ideas focused on the prevention and treatment of mental illness

The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR), affiliated with the University of Ottawa, has launched a new research incubator called Emerging Research Innovators in Mental Health (e-RIHM^h) - the first of its kind in Canada focusing solely on Mental Health Research.

We are seeking the world's best and brightest early-career researchers ready to put their careers into overdrive. Applicants are encouraged to propose highly original projects that explore out-of-the-box ideas and hold the potential to transform current thinking in Mental Health Research.   The successful candidates will get a chance to put their careers into overdrive through salary support, research grant support, mentorship, and real world opportunity for up to five years.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• Be within the first seven years of completion of a MD and/or PhD degree;
• Be engaged in research that complements and contributes to mental health discovery and the strategic priorities of IMHR;
• Demonstrate an excellent level of research achievement and promise of future impact in mental health research, as evidenced by proposed research, quality of publications, awards received, and statements by referees;
• Demonstrate a track record of, or interest in, engaging across disciplines, as well as with sectors beyond academia to enrich and extend the impact of their research;
• Obtain and hold a valid work permit to work in Canada for the period of employment (there are no restrictions on citizenship).

The overall goals of the HeLTI initiative are outlined on the HeLTI webpage. The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

• Develop a new linked DOHaD intervention-risk cohort composed of a representative population, including recruitment of women both preconception and during pregnancy, their infants, as well as the fathers;
• Develop and conduct implementation, as well as evaluate implemented interventions for, and with, women and men preconception, during pregnancy and for infants during the postnatal period that are designed to substantially reduce the prevalence of NCDs;
• Conduct evaluation and mechanistic studies that will explain the effect of the selected interventions on outcomes, including economic analyses of interventions;
• As part of the international HeLTI initiative, develop international multi-country, multi-disciplinary, cross-site collaborations that will provide a learning platform and training environment for new investigators and/or early career stage researchers, support data interoperability and improve harmonization practices;
• Generate evidence that will guide policy and other decision-making, and identify opportunities for future research and interventions as part of a longer-term strategy for NCD prevention;
• Improve health outcomes, particularly related to women and men’s health preconception, during pregnancy, early life and childhood by targeting early exposures and early development.

The Project Grant program is designed to capture ideas with the greatest potential to advance health-related knowledge, health research, health care, health systems, and/or health outcomes. It supports projects with a specific purpose and a defined endpoint. The best ideas may stem from new, incremental, innovative, and/or high-risk lines of inquiry or knowledge translation approaches.

The Project Grant program is expected to:

• Support a diverse portfolio of health-related research and knowledge translation projects at any stage, from discovery to application, including commercialization;
• Contribute to the creation and use of health-related knowledge;
• Promote relevant collaborations across disciplines, professions, and sectors.

The Foundation Grant program is designed to contribute to a sustainable foundation of new and established health research leaders, by providing long-term support for the pursuit of innovative and high-impact research programs.

The Foundation Grant program is expected to:

• Support a broad base of health research leaders across all career stages, areas, and health-related disciplines including basic, biomedical research with a demonstrable track record of excellence and impact in their field of study;
• Develop and maintain Canadian capacity in health research and other related fields;
• Provide research leaders with the flexibility to pursue novel and innovative lines of inquiry;
• Contribute to the creation and application of health-related knowledge through a wide range of research and/or knowledge translation activities, including relevant collaborations.

The objective of this funding opportunity is to identify a Chair in the area of hypertension research who will focus on:

• Improving awareness, prevention and control of hypertension;
• Identifying gaps in KTE and KT from evidence to practice for hypertension prevention and control;
• Developing and evaluating new policies, programs and interventions aimed at reducing the burden and/or impact of hypertension;
• Participating in mentoring and involving trainees; and,
• Developing a research and policy program that will have strong potential to have a substantial impact on policy and/or the lives of many persons with hypertension within a 5-year time frame.

ORF-RE Round 9 has three application streams: 

1. General – open to all disciplines;
2. Disruptive Technologies focused on Clean Technologies; and,
3. Social, Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Institutions must select one stream for each Notice of Intent (NOI) and application form.

Notice of Intent (NOI) – due May 2, 2017

Application – due September 25, 2017

The mission of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) is to commission research in sports medicine and science and, where feasible, establish standards for athletic equipment. Accordingly, the intent of the NOCSAE grant program is to commission investigator-initiated research and to provide support for education, health, and safety research and development. The NOCSAE research plan proposed by the applicant must be related to NOCSAE’s stated program interests. NOCSAE will fund awards under two separate mechanisms, (1) small pilot developmental studies, (not to exceed $50,000 in direct costs for one year) and (2) traditional research projects (not to exceed $250,000 in direct costs over two years).  NOCSAE is very interested in funding the small pilot development studies listed above.
