The CIHR Dementia Research Strategy supports research on the latest preventive, diagnostic and treatment approaches to Alzheimer's disease and related dementia. It consists of an international and a national component. Together, these components allow the Government of Canada to support world-class research on dementia that will contribute to the global pursuit of finding a cure or disease-modifying treatment for dementia by 2025.

This funding opportunity seeks to address the need for innovative research to underpin new approaches to therapeutic intervention. Applications should be between Centers of Excellence (CoEs) with a critical mass of resources and expertise to drive a step change in neurodegeneration research.

The call sets out to encourage the community to think “outside the box”, to stimulate new and unconventional approaches and creative solutions to the challenges of neurodegeneration research by undertaking high-risk / high-payoff research.

An aim of the COEN initiative is to build productive links between research groups within recognized centres of excellence in neurodegeneration. To this end, it is expected that teams will combine the research strengths across CoEs in at least two partner countries to provide a true value-added collaborative effort that will advance our approach to neurodegeneration research. Projects will address issues which would not readily be funded through the standard grant mechanisms of the COEN partners, and it is expected that in addition to collaboration across CoEs, projects should also serve to provide a platform for future collaboration with industry.

Our aim is to increase each solution’s chances of successfully making it to the marketplace, and help Canadian entrepreneurs carry out their innovation efforts within Canada. We support only the most innovative technologies; those with the potential to meet market demand and to achieve Canada’s environmental and economic goals in priority areas. The Government of Canada has allocated a total of $915 million for the fund.

The SD Natural Gas Fund™ supports the late-stage development and pre-commercial demonstration of new downstream natural gas cleantech solutions that will generate cleaner energy, create new jobs and stimulate economic growth in Canada. Our aim is to increase each project’s chances of successfully making it to the marketplace, and help Canadian entrepreneurs carry out their innovation efforts within Canada. We support only the most innovative technologies; those with the potential to meet market demand and to achieve Canada’s environmental and economic goals in natural gas priority areas.

Universities may be partners on the above grants.

Partnership Development Grants provide support over one to three years to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to:

• develop research and related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and new scholars, by fostering new partnerships for research and related activities involving existing and/or potential partners; or
• design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

Partnerships funding is intended for larger teams working in formal collaboration between postsecondary institutions and/or organizations of various types.

A formal partnership is a bilateral or multilateral formal collaboration agreement between an applicant and one or more partner organizations, of which at least one must be a Canadian postsecondary institution and at least one must be different from the institution or organization that will administer the grant funds. Partnerships may be between academic institutions, or between one or more academic institutions and one or more non-academic partner organizations. These partner organizations agree and commit to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals for mutual benefit. FY15 Restorative Transplant Research Program

Applications to the Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) Reconstructive Transplant Research (RTR) program are being solicited for the Defense Health Agency, Research, Development, and Acquisition (DHA RDA) Directorate, by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA). As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the DHA RDA Directorate manages and executes the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. This Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity and subsequent awards will be managed and executed by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) with strategic oversight from Joint Program Committee 8/Clinical and Rehabilitative Medicine Research Program (JPC-8/CRMRP).

The RTR program was initiated in 2012 to fund innovative projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on improving the function, wellness, and overall quality of life for injured military Service members and Veterans, their caregivers and family members, and the American public. Appropriations for the RTR from FY12 through FY14 totaled $30 million (M). The FY15 appropriation is $15M.

The Discovery Grants Program supports ongoing programs of research (with long-term goals) rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances. Discovery Grants are considered ‘grants in aid’ of research as they provide long term operating funds to support the costs of a research program. As a grant in aid of research, Discovery Grants are not meant to support the full costs of a research program and they can facilitate access to funding from other programs. NSERC recognizes that, while being of a grant in aid nature, Discovery Grants must be sufficient to support a program of quality research that can have a meaningful impact on the field of study.

Suicide bombing and mass-shooting terrorism remain among the principal concerns of public security professionals. In many scenarios, for example mass-transit, sporting events, or buildings, traditional “air-port-style” screening is not feasible due to the high flow of subjects or for other reasons. The NATO Sci-ence for Peace and Security Programme (SPS)-sponsored STANdoff Detection of EXplosives (STANDEX) Programme combined real time sensors, video tracking and data fusion to allow early detec-tion of person-borne improvised explosive devices in moving crowds with the goal of stopping an attack before it can affect the targeted infrastructure.

The SPS Programme is currently seeking to extend STANDEX with new technologies and new scenarios and hereby solicits proposals to develop technologies or systems which can confirm, with high confi-dence, the detection of person borne explosive devices and/or firearms concealed on the body or in bags of single individuals identified by an upstream screening detector.

The RTR program was initiated in 2012 to fund innovative projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on improving the function, wellness, and overall quality of life for injured military Service members and Veterans, their caregivers and family members, and the American public. Appropriations for the RTR from FY12 through FY14 totaled $30 million (M). The FY15 appropriation is $15M.

The JPC-8/CRMRP mission is to implement long-term strategies to develop knowledge and materiel products to reconstruct, rehabilitate, and provide definitive care for injured Service members. The ultimate goal is to return Service members to duty and restore their quality of life. Through the RTR program, the JPC-8/CRMRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for, and address neglected issues in, the field of reconstructive transplantation (RT), specifically vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA)-focused research, also known as composite tissue allotransplantation. VCA refers to the transplantation of multiple tissues such as muscle, bone, nerve, and skin, as a functional unit (e.g., a hand or face) from a deceased donor to a recipient with a severe injury.
