Applications to the Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP) are being solicited for the Defense Health Agency, Research, Development, and Acquisition (DHA RDA) Directorate, by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA). As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the DHA RDA Directorate manages and executes the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The executing agent for this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The SCIRP was initiated in 2009 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit that has the potential to make a significant impact on improving the health and well-being of military Service members, Veterans, and other individuals living with SCI. Appropriations for the SCIRP from FY09 through FY14 totaled $127.85 million (M). The FY15 appropriation is $30M.

The FY15 SCIRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in the field of SCI-focused research. Applications from investigators within the military Services, and applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. Though the SCIRP supports groundbreaking research, all projects must demonstrate solid scientific rationale.

Military Burn Research Program - Burn Injuries Research Award

Applications to the Fiscal Year 2015 (FY15) Military Burn Research Program (MBRP) are being solicited by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA). The executing agent for this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). The MBRP was initiated in 2011 to address combat-related and trauma-induced burn injuries, as well as to improve health and performance outcomes for Service members and the general public at large. Appropriations for the MBRP from FY11 through FY14 totaled $30 million (M). The FY15 appropriation is $8M.

The objective of this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is to explore innovative approaches to accelerate the translation of advances in knowledge into new treatments of the injured Service member who sustains burn injuries. The results of the research funded through the FY15 MBRP Burn Injuries Research Award are expected to increase the body of knowledge and knowledge products available to professionals and practitioners in health, medical science, and related fields.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships proposals are expected to respond to the objectives put forward in the call for proposals for the  Talent program.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships support the most promising Canadian new scholars in the social sciences and humanities and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers.

SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships provide stipendiary support to recent PhD graduates who are:

• undertaking original research;
• publishing research findings;
• developing and expanding personal research networks;
• broadening their teaching experience;
• preparing for research-intensive careers within and beyond academia; and
• preparing to become competitive in national research grants competitions.

Fellowships will normally be awarded to candidates affiliated with a university other than that which awarded the PhD. SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship awards are tenable at Canadian or foreign universities and research institutions.

Objectives

Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment.

Description

RTI Grants are one-year awards of up to $150,000 that assist in the purchase or fabrication of research equipment with a net cost between $7,001 and $250,000 (excluding taxes, shipping and handling). The research community is also encouraged to explore other avenues for funding research tools and instruments, including NSERC's other programs that include the purchase of equipment as eligible expenses, such as Discovery Grants.

Internal Competition

Dear NSERC-Eligible Faculty Member:

NSERC has just announced this year's competition for the RTI Grants Program. The RTI application system will continue to have each institution being assigned a quota of applications that they can submit to NSERC's national competition (October 25 deadline). Under this system, Lakehead University has been assigned a quota of four applications. Therefore, in preparation for the fall RTI competition, Lakehead University faculty members are invited to submit complete RTI grant application packages (main application completed in the NSERC Research Portal, along with CCVs of the applicant and co-applicants) no later than September 14, 2015 to Research Services. Applicants and co-applicants must each currently hold or be applying for an NSERC research grant (Discovery, Strategic Partnerships, Collaborative Research and Development, Canada Research Chairs, Canada Excellence Research Chair) at the time of application.

If more than four applications are received, all of the submissions will be appraised and ranked according to NSERC's RTI evaluation criteria by an equipment and infrastructure sub-committee of the SRC. Subject to final approval by the Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation), the FOUR applications receiving the highest ranking will be submitted to NSERC by the October 25, 2015 deadline.

The objectives of this funding opportunity are three-fold:

• State of Knowledge and Research Gaps:
  • describe the state of knowledge of the Future Challenge Area theme under consideration;
  • identify knowledge gaps within the theme; and
  • identify the most promising policies and practices related to the theme.
• Research Data:
  • assess the quality, accuracy and rigour of current work in the field; and

Knowledge Synthesis Grants are not intended to support original research. Rather, they are intended to support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and the identification of knowledge gaps. This call is particularly focused on the state of research knowledge emerging over the past 10 years.

The CAF needs a collaborative mental health epidemiology research team to lead six specific analysis projects using its 2013 Mental Health Survey data and to serve as a co-author on six additional analysis projects using the same survey data.  These proposed analyses require the expertise of mental health epidemiologists in the domains of: suicidality, adverse childhood experiences, anxiety disorders other than PTSD, income and mental disorders, alcohol use disorders, and chronic pain.

The Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) has entered into partnership with the Government of Canada to procure Research and Development Services related to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of active military members, Veterans and their families.  CIMVHR is seeking Notices of Interest from qualified researchers or a research team to enter into a contract with CIMVHR to produce this Work.

The Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme is a policy tool that enhances cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. The SPS Programme provides funding, expert advice, and support to security-relevant activities jointly developed by a NATO member and partner country.

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) is launching a call for proposals for child and youth protection initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The total amount of funding available under the call is fifteen million Canadian dollars (CAD $15,000,000), to be disbursed over a period of up to five years.

Based on the availability of funds, DFATD will fund projects valued at between three million Canadian dollars (CAD $3,000,000) and seven million Canadian dollars (CAD $7,000,000) and that will be implemented over a period of three to five years.
