Research Fellowship Program

The Canadian Harkness Fellowship Award enables talented Canadians to participate in the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice , a core program of The Commonwealth Fund's International Program in Health Policy and Innovation.

The Commonwealth Fund, in collaboration with the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI), offers a unique opportunity for promising mid-career professionals — academic researchers, government policy-makers, clinical leaders, senior hospital managers and journalists -- to spend a year in the United States to study healthcare delivery system reforms (e.g. bundled payments, accountable care organizations, innovative approaches to care for high-need, high-cost patients) and critical issues on the health policy agenda in both the U.S. and Canada.

The Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) is proud to put out its call for applications for its research and fellowship programs for the 2016-2017 grant period. The deadline to submit applications for all the programs is November 13, 2015. The eligibility criteria and conditions for all our research programs have been revised and updated. Of note, eligibility has been expanded as follows:

Ø  Dream of a Cure: the program is no longer limited to hemophilia A & B-related projects so that projects focusing on von Willebrand disease, rare factor deficiencies, platelet function disorders (and platelet pathophysiology) and other congenital and acquired bleeding disorders can be supported;

Ø  Dream of a Cure Studentshipsin Inherited Bleeding Disorders Research: similarly to our basic scientific research program, the studentships are no longer limited to hemophilia-related projects but include all inherited bleeding disorders. Furthermore, science students in any year of an undergraduate program can apply in addition to medical students in any year of training;

Ø  CHS/Pfizer Care Until Cure Research Program: the areas of interest to which investigators are encouraged to submit proposals has been expanded and all projects included but not limited to the list will be considered.

Ø  CHS/Baxalta Inherited Bleeding Disorder Fellowship Program for Nurses and Allied Health Care Professionals: applications from hemophilia program professionals/graduate students from the disciplines of nursing, physiotherapy, social work and other related allied health disciplines will be considered. Professional experience in a hemophilia treatment centre is desirable but not required.

Ø  CHS/Novo Nordisk Psychosocial Research Programme: applications from Social Workers, Nurses, or Physiotherapists with professional experience in a hemophilia treatment centre (or other comparable settings in which care has been provided to people with hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders) or persons interested in the field of inherited bleeding disorders will be considered. Students in a PhD program in one of the allied health disciplines may also apply. Professionals who have appointments in universities and who can dedicate time to research are encouraged to apply. Professional experience in a hemophilia treatment centre is desirable but not required.

Innovation to Impact Grants (i2I) are intended to support the further development of successful findings based on the goals originally explored through a CCSRI Innovation Grant. Therefore, only investigators with a funded Innovation Grant are eligible for this program.

Applicants are required to articulate specific achievements from the original Innovation Grant (i.e., significant new knowledge, publications, intellectual property, technology development, or relevant endpoints) and clearly describe and justify the progression to the new research proposed.

Investigators looking to explore unexpected outcomes or ideas not originally proposed in a funded Innovation Grant are encouraged to apply for a new Innovation Grant as the Innovation to Impact Grant program is designed to build upon successful outcomes from the objectives of the original Innovation grant. It is expected that the applicant pool to this program will be small due to the “high-risk” nature of Innovation Grants.

The Research Project Grant Program funds laboratory and pre-clinical investigations, clinical research, psychosocial, cancer control, survivorship, quality of life, and other breast cancer research projects. Proposed studies may include participatory, community-based methodologies. Funding requested for each project may not exceed $150,000 per year and $450,000 in total. Individual projects may have up to five years to complete. 

  FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Fellowship Program supports research and/or academic or clinical training for graduate and post-graduate level scientists, physicians, and allied health professionals to pursue and develop expertise in breast cancer research and care. 

This Funding Opportunity is designed to take advantage of ongoing research initiatives across Canada in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to create a collaborative, integrated and impactful Consortium structure for the Canadian TBI research community. The primary goal at this stage is the harmonization of data collection to set the stage for future nation-wide and international collaborative research efforts.

IHDCYH is launching its second round of the IHDCYH Talks Video Competition, a unique opportunity to submit short videos sharing evidence-based messages in the area of maternal, reproductive, child and youth health. The IHDCYH Talks Video Competition is an opportunity to profile evidence and ideas within IHDCYH’s mandate to improve knowledge translation and help demonstrate the impact that evidence can and does have on maternal, reproductive, child and youth health in Canada.

This competition encourages the production of videos that present a clear evidence-based message to a lay audience that is designed to have a positive impact on the health of children, youth and families. It is important that the content be engaging, easily understood and accessible to a lay audience.

Successful videos will be posted on CIHR and IHDCYH social media and other communications materials.

The goal of Healthy and Productive Work is to bring together researchers, workers, employers, policy-makers, regulators, clinicians, insurers, service providers, workplace safety and insurance boards, unions, professional associations, and other stakeholders across sectors to develop, implement, evaluate and scale-up innovative, evidence-informed and gender-responsive solutions to foster the labour force participation of men and women with health issues (e.g., injuries, illnesses, chronic diseases, mental health challenges, and other conditions) and disabilities, as well as older workers and workers with caregiving responsibilities outside of their paid work.

The Healthy and Productive Work initiative focuses on interventions which may include but are not limited to accommodations, tools and policies that address modifications to work and work environments designed to enable participation in meaningful work. 

The objectives of Phase 1: Partnership Development Grants are to:

• Foster relationships between researchers and stakeholders;
• Promote knowledge sharing and collaborative problem identification; and
• Support activities to facilitate the development of a Partnership Grant proposal.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• Promote the creation of new knowledge that is relevant to communities affected by HIV in Canada and to the goals of the Federal Initiative;
• Promote the dissemination of new knowledge and uptake of evidence into action to enhance the community response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic;
• Develop partnerships between researchers and affected communities;
• Build capacity in the knowledge user community to engage in research and use evidence in their everyday business; and
• Build the next generation of HIV/AIDS CBR researchers through meaningful engagement of trainees in high quality CBR projects.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• supporting partnerships between communities affected by HIV in Canada and researchers to facilitate the conduct of community-based research; and/or
• developing future applications for more comprehensive community-based research grants.

Examples of activities that might be conducted under this Funding Opportunity (but are not restricted to) are:

• Facilitation of dialogue between communities and researchers in order to establish research partnerships;
• Workshops to design a research project and/or develop a proposal for a future CBR operating grant;
• Planning and execution of pilot projects or feasibility studies to generate preliminary data, proof of concept; and/or
• Development and / or validation of new inventions, tools, methodologies, protocols, theoretical models or frameworks;
