Lakehead University, Orillia Campus, invites applications for a Contract Lecturer in the Department of Biology. Applications are requested to teach:

Biology 2230 FAO – Cell Biology

Study of the molecular, metabolic and structural organization of eukaryotic cells in relation to function: membrane structure, transmembrane transport and membrane-bound compartments in cells, bioenergetics in mitochondria and chloroplasts, functions and trafficking of proteins, vesicular traffic and secretion, cytoskeleton and cell movement, extracellular matrix and cell adhesions, introduction to cell signalling. Experimental evidence for the concepts studied and principles of techniques used in cell biology research.

Biology 3250 FAO – Comparative Animal Physiology

Overview of the major physiological systems of the animal body with particular emphasis on mammals. Topics covered will include but not necessarily be restricted to: form and function of neural systems including sensory and motor pathways, endocrine systems, the musculoskeletal system and locomotion, thermoregulatory strategies, cardiovascular systems and fluid compartments of the body, and respiration..

Biology 2171 WAO – Genetics

Understand Mendel's genetic laws, experimental design, and how they apply to the heredity patterns which Mendel observed in pea plants. Understand the link between genotype and phenotype. Understand the difference between a character and a trait. Understand the difference between dominant and recessive alleles and the difference between homozygous and heterozygous. Understand extensions to Mendel's laws. Learn chromosome and inheritance and sex chromosomes. Learn gene linkage, recombination, and gene mapping. Learn DNA replication, gene mutation, and gene functional analysis. Learn genome annotation and genomic analysis.

     Friday – 11:30am – 2:30pm Lab

Biology 3251 WAO – Organ System Operation and Regulation

A comparative study of animal organ system physiology. Areas to be discussed include the structure, operation and regulation of muscle, cardiovascular systems, osmotic and ionic regulation, respiratory- and gastrointestinal systems.

Start Date/Duration:   January 4, 2027 – April 6, 2027

     Mondays and Wednesdays  2:30 – 4:00 pm

     Wednesday – 11:30 am – 2:30 pm Lab

Qualifications Preferred:   Ph.D. preferred and experience in teaching 

Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of course delivery is highly desired. 

Compensation

In accordance with Collective Agreement provisions, Contract Lecturers shall be remunerated at one of the three following levels:

Level 1: $8,355 (per HCE)

Level 2: $8,590 (per HCE)

Level 3: $9,059 (per HCE)
