Elizabeth Thomson - Guest Speaker
Elizabeth Thomson came to speak to the students on October 25th, 2017. Elizabeth was the first female articling student in Thunder Bay. She is a member of the bar in Ontario, U.K, Australia, and Hong Kong. Her legal journey has taken her around the world; she moved abroad and has worked in Hong Kong and headed a bank for 6 months in Germany. She is the honorary chairwoman and founder of the Amber Foundation. She is also a supporter of Lakehead University, with a bursary in her family’s name.
Elizabeth spoke to the students about these events in her life. She discussed how many times in the past she was faced with working for and with all-male groups. She spoke about the difference in laws in Hong Kong and Canada; how in the past, becoming a lawyer in Hong Kong was quite different than Canada. Elizabeth encouraged everyone to broaden their horizons and explore working in different parts of the world. She encouraged students to take every opportunity that presents itself! Thank you, Elizabeth, for these words of wisdom!"
Orientation for the Class of 2020
This year’s Faculty of Law’s Orientation saw 79 news faces in attendance! The week kicked off with a warm welcome from Dean EagleWoman and continued by introducing our 1L students to the ins and outs of both Lakehead University and the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.
Our class of 2020 was also embraced by the Thunder Bay legal community at the beautiful new courthouse in our “Welcome to the Legal Profession Ceremony.”
Highlights of the week included a Mock Law Class, Student Panel, and participation in the emotional KAIROS Blanket Exercise. It was a jam-packed event, full of activities and information. We wish our students the very best as they embark upon this new and exciting journey!
