Brianna Knox of London, Ont., is excited to start her Lakehead journey this September after winning the University’s first-year free tuition draw.

In a draw for Fall 2021 incoming domestic high school students coming to Lakehead University, students had an opportunity to win their first-year tuition for free by registering and attending Virtual Open Houses, and many other eligible domestic recruitment webinars or meetings with Lakehead recruiters.

Knox will attend Lakehead University this fall to begin a degree in Psychology.

“It shocked me . . . I was just blown away,” she said after learning she was the winner.

“I was out with my family when my dad told me I have a call from Lakehead . . . I picked up the phone, and this woman says, ‘Congratulations, you're our free tuition winner!’, and I kept asking her if she was serious. I couldn’t believe it.”

Knox learned about Lakehead University by attending a university fair in Toronto while in high school, which is when Lakehead became her number one choice.

“I had a list of universities that I wanted to go to, but when we went to the fair and I saw the Lakehead presentation, the people there were so nice . . . I just felt something click,” she said.

“Lakehead is a small school, it’s community oriented, and it's in a really cool city,” she added.

“It just seemed right. I was looking at their classes and their programs; they have so much to offer. Lakehead truly has so many interesting courses that I don't know how I'm supposed to choose which ones I’m going to take.”

Knox is looking forward to moving to Thunder Bay as she loves the landscape of the region, which she has visited while camping with family.

When asked what she will do first when she arrives, she said, “Once I'm settled in, I’ll probably walk around campus and try to find my classes.

“I don't want to get lost, but that's one thing I like about it, it is a small campus, and even the residences are really close to the school. I will probably check out the library, Student Central, and figure out where everything is to make sure I don't get lost on my way to find my lunch,” Knox said, adding that she is still pinching herself that she won her first year tuition for free.

“I just keep getting more excited so I just have to wait and see what happens in the fall.”
