Lakehead University organizing a tasty talk on ancient beer

Patrick McGovern has travelled to Egypt and other countries around the world to re-create ancient beer.

February 23, 2018 – Thunder Bay, ON

Lakehead University’s Carney Matheson will participate in a thirst-quenching Research and Innovation Week discussion about ancient beer at the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel on Saturday, March 3 at 7 pm.

The talk, called Ancient Brews Rediscovered and Re-created, will be hosted by Patrick McGovern, a chemist with the University of Pennsylvania Museum who has travelled around the world to re-create ancient ale.

McGovern wrote a book with the same name as the talk. He will discuss ancient beers and the evolution of brewing. The Sleeping Giant Brewery will provide samples of ancient beers brewed following recipes determined through ancient history, archaeology and chemistry.

“There will be two beers to sample,” said Matheson, an Anthropology professor at Lakehead University. “One is from the Etruscans, a pre-Roman people in Italy. Their golden days were around 800 BC and they collapsed in the third century BC with the Roman-Etruscan wars. The second is from the Norse – this is a Northern European beer. The earliest evidence for a brew in Scandinavia is 3,500 BC, however Scandinavian alcoholic drinks were made from local ingredients and thus varied enormously.”

The exact date for the second ale is difficult to ascertain, Matheson said. “They used this style of drink right up until the 14th century AD.”

The Paleo-brews, which may include wild fruits, honey, cereals, and botanicals, have not been sampled yet. “We don’t know what the beers will taste like,” he said. “Hopefully good.”

McGovern performs the same type of research as Matheson – known as ancient residue analysis.

“I first met Dr. McGovern in 1995 when I was doing residue analysis in Honduras on Mayan sacrificial vessels. He provided advice on residue analysis and archaeological chemistry. Dr. McGovern has focused his research on ancient brewed beverages from all over the world and become renowned for his research.”

McGovern will also visit Lakehead University to examine the research on residue analysis which Matheson and his students are becoming known for across Canada. “His advice will be valuable to residue research at Lakehead University,” Matheson said. “In addition some of Dr. McGovern's techniques will be discussed and added to the Lakehead University research approach.”

McGovern’s book, Ancient Brews Rediscovered and Re-created, which offers instructions on brewing ancient beer, will be for sale and he will sign copies.

Tickets are $15 – available at the Sleeping Giant Brewery, the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel, the Department of Anthropology at Lakehead University, and remaining tickets will be offered at the Anthropology booth at the Intercity Shopping Centre during Research and Innovation Week on Saturday, March 3. The talk will be in the Prince Arthur Hotel’s Provincial room from 7 until 10 pm on Saturday, March 3.

In Conversation lecture to feature talk from Lakehead Orillia Principal

February 16, 2018 – Orillia, ON

Lakehead Orillia principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans stands outside Simcoe Hall

Discover the evolution of the Tallis Litany with Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, Principal of LakeheadUniversity Orillia, during the next installment of In Conversation Speaker Series at the Orillia Public Library.

In his talk, “The Tallis Litany: What the Sources Tell Us”, Dr. Jobin-Bevans will discuss the incredible ways in which the Litany evolved in print over a 400-year period.  The musical setting of the English texts for the Litany attributed to Tallis is one of the earliest musical settings composed for Henry VIII’s new Anglican liturgy of the mid-16th century. Over time, music editors published many versions of this important work, and by comparing these, it is possible to draw conclusions about the role of the music editor and individual attitudes towards music publication.

In Conversation will be presented at the Orillia Public Library on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 2 p.m.  This session is free and open to the public. Register by email to info@orilliapubliclibrary.caor by phone at 705-325-2338.

Lakehead University Business Administration students win accounting competition

Photo of Lakehead Business Administration students receiving a giant cheque.Competition officials presented, middle from left to right, Matthew Etreni, Ryan Ferguson, Sabeera Azhar, and Dylan Paxton with a cheque for $3,000 for placing first in the ACHIEVE case competition.

February 9, 2018 – Thunder Bay, ON

Lakehead University accounting students Dylan Paxton, Matthew Etreni, Ryan Ferguson, and Sabeera Azhar earned first place in the case competition held at the ACHIEVE Conference, February 1 and 2.

ACHIEVE is Canada’s premier undergraduate accounting conference, hosted by one of the most distinguished and largest business schools, the Ted Rogers School of Management. This year’s case competition dealt with persevering in the face of pressure from superiors to bend the rules.

Sixteen teams from across Canada participated in the two-day conference at the Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel in Toronto, which included an accounting-based case competition, guest speakers, and networking events.

“I was extremely fortunate and proud to compete with such amazing representatives of Lakehead University, against very strong accounting teams across Canada,” said Paxton, who is also the President of Lakehead University’s Accounting Club.

“ACHIEVE was a once in a lifetime experience. Our win was due in no short order to the hard work of the Lakehead University Accounting faculty who invested their own time to help us prepare for the competition,” he said, adding that the support provided by Dr. Sayed, Dr. Lento and the rest of the Accounting department was second to none.

“We look forward to defending our title next year,” Paxton said.

The first place win comes with a trophy and $3,000 in prize money to share between the students. The Lakehead University Accounting team also won the BASC competition held in Winnipeg last year.

"I am so glad that I had the opportunity to represent my school at one of the biggest accounting competitions in the country,” Azhar said. “As I come to the end of my undergraduate studies at Lakehead University, I want to thank all of my professors for their hard work and dedication to my education, which has allowed me to be successful at the Achieve Competition and Conference,” she said.

Ferguson agreed. “ACHIEVE was a great networking opportunity and an excellent learning experience,” he said. “I was proud to represent Lakehead over the weekend. Winning this competition is a testament to our professors’ dedication to teaching.”

“What we experienced and what we learned this weekend is something that will undoubtedly stay with us through the rest our academic, professional, and personal lives. While competing, we used everything we’ve learned these past three or four years and it paid off in the end,” Etreni said. “I am beyond proud to represent Lakehead and I look forward to competing again.”

“We are very proud of our students’ accomplishment,” said Dr. Bahram Dadgostar, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration. “Their performance demonstrates the quality of the business program at Lakehead University.”

The Faculty of Business Administration is accredited by both the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA). Fewer than five percent of business schools in the world have AACSB accreditation and only 15 business schools in Canada have this dual accreditation.

January 31, 2018 – Thunder Bay, ON

Lakehead University’s Student Health and Counselling Centre partnered with Thunderwolves athletes and Wolfie for Bell Let’s Talk Day on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Several stations were outside Lakehead’s Main Cafeteria where students participated in games, started a conversation about mental health, posted speech bubbles on the wall and to social media.

Lakehead athletes were on hand to greet students. There were give-aways and other activities that helped start the conversation about mental health.

“For far too long mental health wasn’t discussed or was only talked about behind closed doors,” said Irene Pugliese, Senior Counsellor at Lakehead’s SHCC. “Talking about it makes students aware that it’s OK to ask for help if they need it.”

Dedicated to moving mental health forward in Canada, Bell Let’s Talk promotes awareness and action with a strategy built on four key pillars: Fighting the stigma, improving access to care, supporting world-class research, and leading by example in workplace mental health.

A Bell Let’s Talk Thunderwolves basketball game night will be held on Friday, Feb. 2 at the CJ Sanders Fieldhouse, featuring stick-on tattoos, noisemakers, prizes, posters, and more.

Simcoe County recognized for $1 million donation

Photo of cheque presentation.Participating in the cheque presentation, from left to right, are Deputy Mayor John O’Donnell, Township of Ramara; Simcoe County Warden Gerry Marshall; Dr. Moira McPherson, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor at Lakehead University, Mayor Harry Hughes, Township of Oro Medonte; Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, Principal, Lakehead Orillia; Deputy Mayor Anita Dubeau, Town of Penetanguishene; Mayor George Cornell, Township of Tiny; and Deputy Mayor David Ritchie, Township of Tay.

January 24, 2018 – Orillia, ON

Warden Gerry Marshall and members of Simcoe County Council presented Lakehead University with a $1 million cheque on Wednesday to support growth and access to learning opportunities for students in the region.

The donation is part of the County of Simcoe’s annual pledge to improve access to postsecondary education across the region. Today’s announcement brings the County of Simcoe’s total contributions to Lakehead to approximately $7.5 million since 2009.

Providing residents with access to higher education, training and skills development is the reason why the County continues to invest in the University.

“County Council understands the vital role our region’s post-secondary educational facilities will play for generations to come,” said Warden Marshall. Graduates end up living and working in the region, contributing to the sustainability of our communities.

Lakehead University Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Moira McPherson said that the impact of the County’s contributions over the years has served as a value-added investment in the region.

“Today’s gift furthers Simcoe County’s growth — growth in the success of our teaching, community service, and research activities, as well as increased economic impacts,” she said, citing a recent Economic Impact Study conducted by Lakehead’s Faculty of Business Administration, which concluded that the University’s impact on the County of Simcoe is approximately $80 million to $95 million.

“Lakehead University has been the regions university for over a decade, and we particularly appreciate the County’s consistent, generous, and exceptional support.”

Dr. McPherson, along with Lakehead Orillia Principal Dr. Dean Jobin-Bevans, reported to the County’s Council members and guests how their investment has supported Lakehead’s growth. The positive impacts have included the impressive growth of students enrolled at the campus — from just over 100 students in 2006 to over 1,400 today; growth of academic programs, including those in partnership with Georgian College; as well as international student growth, and the expansion of research activities.

Grace Runciman, a fourth-year Environmental Sustainability Studies student, recalled her journey of personal growth during the ceremony and thanked the County of Simcoe for its support on behalf of the student body.

“It is hard to know exactly what it was that turned on my confidence and helped me begin on this path, but I know for sure that being here at Lakehead has provided me with the best start I could ask for,” she said.  “Thank you to the professors and staff of Lakehead University and the County of Simcoe for giving me the best education experience I could have asked for.”
