Lakehead University Research Ranked Number One in Canada, again

October 27, 2016 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

Two assessments of Canada’s universities have, once again, placed Lakehead University atop several research categories.

For the second year in a row, Re$earch Infosource has ranked Lakehead University number one in Canada in its category of undergraduate research universities.

“At Lakehead University our researchers and students are tackling the scientific, social, economic, and political questions of the future,” said Dr. Andrew Dean, Vice-President, Research and Innovation.

“Lakehead is a full partner in the knowledge economy and our researchers are helping to address relevant issues in our communities.”

Re$earch Infosource’s 2016 rankings show how research at Lakehead University has maintained an excellent status when compared to its peer institutions in Canada.

“This ranking once again demonstrates that Lakehead is an exceptional University for research,” said Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson. “This is an achievement we are excited about – especially considering it’s the second year in a row that Lakehead has ranked first.”

Re$earch Infosource released a retrospective that determined Lakehead is eighth in Canada in research-income growth after climbing nearly 300 per cent in 15 years, and third in the amount of research publications after growing 250 per cent during the same time.

“All the indicators show that Lakehead is improving both in the volume of research activity and in research results,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Re$earch Infosource Inc., adding it’s impressive that Lakehead placed first for the second year in a row.

“This means that these changes are not just a one off – they are systemic. Lakehead has made this growth a part of the research culture,” Freedman said.

Re$earch Infosource’s ranking is based on a balanced scorecard of research inputs and outputs. Calculating the top ranked Undergraduate Research Universities of the Year involves examining several factors, such as the total amount of sponsored research funding received by Lakehead University, research intensity (total research income per full-time faculty member), research outputs based on total number of publications, publication intensity, and publication impact.

Maclean’s also released its 2017 University Rankings.

Each year, Maclean’s ranks Canadian universities on a number of variables and breaks them down into three categories of institutions: Medical Doctoral, Comprehensive, and Primarily Undergraduate. Lakehead University is included among the primarily undergraduate universities.

Lakehead’s strength as a research university is also reflected in the Maclean’s rankings, where Lakehead is ranked second in Ontario in its category for scholarly output and quality of research publications.

Among the five primarily undergraduate universities in Ontario, the 2017 rankings also place Lakehead University:

  • First in Total Research Dollars
  • Second in Citations (scholarly output)
  • First in Student Awards
  • First in Total Library Expenses
  • Second in Scholarships and Bursaries
