Lakehead University’s Research and Innovation Awards Reception was held on Thursday, March 12 to celebrate the dedication and excellence of researchers and students.

Dr. Mary Lou Kelley from the School of Social Work received the SSHRC Distinguished Researcher Award, and Dr. Peter Hollings from Geology received the NSERC Distinguished Researcher Award.

The Distinguished Researcher Award is the highest honour conferred by Lakehead for research and scholarly activity.  

“I am honoured to be recognized as a Distinguished Researcher. My research focuses on a topic of high social importance: improving quality of life for people who are dying,” Dr. Kelley said.

“I work to create partnerships with patients, families and health care providers to develop new models of care and practical resources,” she said.

“My community partners, my research staff and graduate students based at the Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health are integral to the success of my research, and I want to acknowledge them for their tremendous passion, dedication and talent. My research career at Lakehead University has been a privilege,” Dr. Kelley said.

Dr. Kelley started teaching at Lakehead University in 1980. Her community-based participatory action research aims to improve access and quality of palliative care for people living in rural and First Nations communities, and nursing homes.

Her capacity development approach includes developing interdisciplinary education and resources for health care providers.

She was the recipient of the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association's 2011 Award of Excellence and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012 in recognition of her contribution to Canadian palliative care practice, education and research.

Dr. Hollings, Chair of the Department of Geology, was also honoured to receive this recognition.

“I have spent the last 13 years building a research team at Lakehead that focused on the origin of ore deposits around the world – and to have that work recognized in this way is a huge honour,” Dr. Hollings said.

“I have always worked to build teams and collaborations. This award would not have been possible without my research and industry partners, and most of all, my students,” he said.

Dr. Hollings is also the Director of Lakehead’s Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration launched in 2013.

In 2008, Dr. Hollings was awarded the William Harvey Gross medal by the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada. He has published50 peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognized journals, 22 of those as first author, and has been successful in securing major research funding from government and industry while at Lakehead University.

“Congratulations to all of our researchers and thank you for everything you do,” said Dr. Andrew Dean, Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation).

“The impact of research and innovation at Lakehead University is even more significant because of your contributions,” Dr. Dean added.

Lakehead University’s Department of Social Work has become Northwestern Ontario’s hub for the Youth Research and Evaluation eXchange (YouthREX).

YouthREX is a provincially-funded program that allows each hub to engage with small and grassroot youth-serving organizations by providing a variety of supports and resources to help empower young people by involving them in the process.

“The purpose of YouthREX is to improve well-being outcomes for youth in Ontario,” said Dr. David Tranter, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Lakehead University. 

“In order to accomplish this, we are focusing on three areas:  Knowledge Mobilization, capacity building and customized research and evaluation supports,” Dr. Tranter said.

As a part of Ontario’s Youth Action Plan, YouthREX is a province-wide initiative based at York University with five regional hubs across Ontario that promote the integration of research evidence and evaluation in the development and delivery of Ontario’s programs. 

“YouthRex is a dynamic and evolving initiative that supports positive youth development included in Ontario’s evidence-based strategic framework, Stepping Up, which identifies seven themes of well-being,” said Sarah Baum, YouthREX Northwestern Regional Hub Manager. 

The YouthREX regional hubs will engage grassroots organizations that serve youth, academic partners, youth and policy stakeholders for capacity-building, knowledge mobilization, and research and evaluation opportunities. 

YouthREX has received $3.75 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Child and Youth Services with extensive contributions from King’s University College, Western University, Lakehead University, Laurentian University and Carleton University.

Lakehead’s Provost & Vice-President (Academic) Dr. Moira McPherson is pleased to announce the renewal of Dr. Bahram Dadgostar as Dean of the University’s Faculty of Business Administration.

“Dr. Dadgostar’s renewal acknowledges the dedication and contributions he’s made to the growth and success of his faculty, to Lakehead University, and to the communities we serve,” said Dr. McPherson.

Under Dr. Dadgostar, Lakehead’s Faculty of Business Administration has continued to offer one of the finest undergraduate business programs in Canada, as demonstrated by the numerous awards won by its students over the years. 

Dr. Dadgostar said he was grateful for receiving unanimous support from those who provided feedback during the decanal renewal process. “I’m thrilled to be renewed as dean, and I look forward to achieving some very important goals in the next four years.”

During what will be his fifth term as Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, Dr. Dadgostar’s has set his sights on several goals, including enhancing and expanding Lakehead’s Business programs, establishing a centre for entrepreneurship, and obtaining international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Dr. Dadgostar’s academic experience extends 38 years at over six different universities in five countries, including the past 20 years as Lakehead University’s Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration.

After earning his PhD from Iowa State University in 1977, Dr. Dadgostar joined Lakehead University as an Assistant Professor of Economics in 1983. Three years later, he moved to the Faculty of Business Administration to pursue his interest in Finance. Since then, Dr. Dadgostar has shared his academic, research, and professional knowledge and skills with students, colleagues, and community. His contributions range from helping organizations with their strategic finance initiatives to serving on boards, including as chair of the Board of Canadian Federation of Business School Deans, and as a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the Canadian Consortium of Management Schools. He currently sits on the Board of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce.

Lakehead University Chair, 50th Anniversary Task Force

December 10, 2015 – Orillia, ON

A determined golfer, world-class dancer, and leading hockey goal scorer were recently named as Lakehead Orillia’s Athletes-of-the-Month in recognition of their outstanding performance over the past semester.

Each month during the school year, the Plastics Protect & Holliswealth Athletic Achievement Award is presented to a student athlete to recognize exemplary leadership, sportsmanship and athletic performance.

Three student athletes from Lakehead University’s Orillia campus were recently awarded Athlete-of-the-Month awards, recognizing their outstanding accomplishments. The recipients are (l-r): September – Brett Gibson, Varsity Golf; October – Jaclyn Boyd, Dance Team; and November – Andreas Alexiou, Men’s Hockey.

In September, Brett Gibson, a third-year Bachelor of Business Administration student, won the award for his tenacity and performance at the 2015 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Golf Championship, which took place at Hunters Pointe Golf Course in Welland, Ont. Brett maintained his focus throughout three tough days of competition, during which the team experienced rain showers, cold temperatures, 50 km/h winds, and a two-hour storm delay. He improved his score each day and finished the tournament with the lowest single round and tournament score for Lakehead. Brett, originally from Kitchener, is a transfer student from Connestoga College, where he studied business. This is his first year at Lakehead University.

A former Team Canada dancer won the Athlete-of-the-Month award for October. Jaclyn Boyd, from Hamilton, is a third year student in the Honours Bachelor of Arts & Science/Bachelor of Education program. With her background in international competition, including a gold medal win at the 2010 world competition, Jaclyn has quickly become an invaluable member of Lakehead’s Dance Team. “Her high energy and positive outlook is infectious and has really helped the team prepare for rehearsals and competition – she is a wonderful teammate,” said her coach.

November’s award went to Andreas Alexiou, of Ajax, who is also a third-year student in the Honours Bachelor of Arts & Science/Bachelor of Education program. He has been  a member of the Men’s Hockey Team for three years is currently the leading scorer. Always a strong offensive threat on the ice, Andreas is known for his excellent work ethic, giving everything he has during every shift.

In addition to honouring the efforts of individual athletes, the award provides $500 to support the athlete’s team or club activities.

The award was established under the direction of former Olympic and Canadian championship athlete, Michelle Cowell, who represents the award donor, Plastics Protect & HollisWealth.

December 8, 2015 – Orillia, ON

For the first time, students enrolled in the two-year General Arts & Science program at Georgian are studying Political Science as part of the requirements of the program, thanks to the development of new courses by Dr. Doug West, Associate Professor with the Departments of Interdisciplinary Studies and Political Science at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus.

West is just finishing up fall courses on Politics in Canada at both Lakehead University and Georgian College, representing a milestone in the Georgian Lakehead partnership.

“This is a wonderful way to introduce more students to Political Science and the careers that it can lead to,” said Dr. Moira McPherson, Lakehead University Provost & Vice President Academic. “With the articulation agreement we have with Georgian, students can now transfer into our new program in Political Science at Lakehead Orillia to turn their diplomas into degrees.”

Political Science was added to Lakehead’s degree programs at the Orillia campus in September 2015, although it was one of the original programs at Lakehead University’s Thunder Bay campus. The Department recently celebrated a 50-year reunion with faculty and alumni.

In addition to the Politics in Canada course, West will be teaching Global Politics as part of the Georgian program in the winter semester. Both courses are now required for the Arts & Science diploma program.

“It’s very encouraging to see the interest among students at both the College and the University,” said West. “Political Science is about civic engagement and helps students realize their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Everyone should have at least one course in political science; it helps them connect to their community.”

The growth of Political Science at both postsecondary institutions is helping to fulfill the objectives of the Georgian Lakehead partnership and enhance the access to education options in the region.  Above all, it supports career and further education opportunities for students. A Political Science Degree can lead to careers in public service, journalism, or in social service agencies and government relations. Some students also pursue law school or international public service with their training in Political Science.

Candles were lit in memory of the 14 women who were killed at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.

December 7, 2015 – Thunder Bay, ON

LUSU’s Gender Issues Centre held a service at Lakehead University for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Monday, Dec. 7.

The memorial service was held to honour and remember the 14 female engineering students who were murdered at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on December 6, 1989.

In 1991, Canada declared December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women to honour the women who lost their lives and to renew the commitment to end violence against women.

“This is a day to remember not only the women senselessly killed 26 years ago, but also the women who lose their lives to violence each day,” said Stephanie Simko, Coordinator of the Gender Issues Centre.

The memorial included several local speakers, a photo display of the 14 victims of the L’Ecole Polytechnique, and roses and candles honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and women and children who lost their lives this year as a result of domestic violence.

“In Canada and around the world, women are victims of violence simply because of their gender,” said Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson.

“Violence against women and girls must stop,” Dr. Stevenson said.

Lakehead University’s English Language Program has earned accreditation from Languages Canada, which reviews and accredits top ESL programs across the country.

“This prestigious accreditation not only validates the fine work being done by our academic and administrative staff, but it also speaks to the excellent student services and community-based activities offered by the program,” said Leigh-Ellen Keating, Director of Lakehead University International.

This designation opens up opportunities to attract students from around the world and to partner with world-class educational institutions. 

“Obtaining this certification has been a goal since the inception of the program. I’m grateful to have had such a dedicated and competent team working towards this achievement,” Keating said.  

One of the requirements of Languages Canada is that all teachers are TESL Canada certified. “There are very few TESL Canada certified teachers in Thunder Bay so we have consistently had to source our teachers from other cities,” Keating said.   

Lakehead University’s Faculty of Education runs a fantastic TESL Canada recognized TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) program.  Graduates from the 100-hour course meet the requirement not only to work in a program certified by Languages Canada, such as Lakehead’s English Language Program, but at schools across the globe.

Languages Canada also represents Canadian institutions on the international stage.

Lakehead University’s Report to the Community luncheon recognized the influential people and events from the last year and celebrated the University’s 50^th anniversary.

People from Thunder Bay gathered at the Valhalla Inn on November 24 to celebrate the release of the University’s special commemorative 2014-15 Annual Report.

Brian MacIvor was among the group of community members, students, faculty and staff who were interviewed by CBC Thunder Bay’s Lisa Laco in a talk-show format during the luncheon.

MacIvor described why he and the Thunder Bay legal community support the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

Other participants included Professor Emeritus John Whitfield, who discussed Lakehead’s early years and evolution.

Jocelyn Bel is a Master of Business Administration student who described her experiences as a Lakehead undergraduate student and as co-director with Superior Science.

Dr. Matthew Tocheri, assistant professor in Anthropology, was interviewed about his experiences as a Lakehead student, his work at the Smithsonian, about returning to Lakehead as a Canada Research Chair, and about the Homo floresienis dig that he participated in.

Lakehead President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Brian Stevenson shared highlights from the annual report and his vision for the future of the Thunder Bay campus.

“As we celebrate 50 years of success in Thunder Bay, I am increasingly focussed and encouraged by what our future holds, including the drive to bring even more international students to our classrooms and communities, and increased and rewarding community outreach,” he said.

The Annual Report stated that Lakehead Thunder Bay’s operating expenditures had an economic impact of $316 million on the City of Thunder Bay in 2014, and a $6-billion economic impact on the City over the last 50 years. 

Also highlighted in the Report, Lakehead received $22 million in external research funding in 2014, and Re$earch Infosource ranked the University second in Ontario and third in Canada in the undergraduate category.

A former Lakehead University chancellor is challenging the community to make a gift to the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

Dr. Arthur Mauro, Lakehead University’s chancellor from 2009-2012, and the Mauro Family Foundation will match each gift or pledge received from November 1, 2015 to April 30, 2016, dollar-for-dollar to a maximum of $250,000.

These gifts will be used to establish or enhance existing scholarships, bursaries or awards for current and future Bora Laskin Faculty of Law students.

“One of the greatest challenges law students face is the cost of tuition,” Dr. Mauro said. “Through scholarship support, we can help students so they can concentrate on their studies and really get involved with the community.”

The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law is committed to improving access to legal services in Northern Ontario and throughout rural Canada.

“Our students are already starting to make a difference in their communities through third-year placements and their voluntary work,” said Lisa Philipps, Interim Dean of the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

“This kind of support is invaluable in ensuring that talented people from all parts of Ontario have access to legal education.”

Students are provided the highest standard of legal education, where knowledge of the law is fused with the necessary skills to apply the law effectively.

With a focus on Aboriginal, Natural Resources, Environmental and sole practice law, the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law prepares students for rewarding careers focused on issues unique to Ontario’s north.
