CANCELLED: The Lakehead Challenge to discuss the state of water in Ontario

Dr. Doug West

Dr. Doug West, Associate Professor of Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies, will lead a discussion about the state of water in Ontario at the next event of “The Lakehead Challenge,” taking place at the Midland Cultural Centre on Tuesday, August 11.

July 27, 2015 – Orillia, ON

Please note this event has been cancelled.

Residents of the Georgian Bay and Simcoe County regions will have the opportunity to learn about how local water resources have an impact on their lives at the next “Lakehead Challenge” event on Tuesday, August 11 in Midland.

“The Challenge of Water: Quantity, Quality and Ontario’s Future,” is the topic of the second event of the conversations series, The Lakehead Challenge, offered at the Midland Cultural Centre (MCC) in partnership with Lakehead University Orillia.

The conversation begins at 7:30 pm, and features panel members Dr. Doug West, Associate Professor of Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies at Lakehead University Orillia, and Debbie Balika, Scientific Advisor to the Coalition of Haliburton Property Owners Association, who recently completed her Master of Biology at Lakehead Orillia and specializes in water quality research and stewardship practices.  Bob Bowles, renowned local naturalist and director of Lakehead’s Ontario Master Naturalist Program will also bring his exceptional knowledge to the panel.

“The quantity and quality of Ontario’s water resources are extremely important, especially to those living in this region,” said Dr. West. “The water levels in Georgian Bay have a significant impact on our local economy and on property values.”

As the population increases, the pressure on our limited freshwater supplies, from expanding industrial and recreational activities, has created a series of challenges that will be addressed during this conversation –

•   Who controls the flow of water in our province?

•   How much water is used by the average consumer on an average day?

•   Can we sustain our current levels of water use in Ontario without serious intervention and education?

This is an opportunity to join experts in an open forum to discuss Ontario’s water and to learn what can be done to conserve our most priceless resource.

Tickets for The Lakehead Challenge are $10/person and can be purchased at the MCC box office (333 King Street, Midland); online at midlandculturalcentre.com; or by calling 705-527-4420. The event begins at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 11, 2015.
