Lakehead Names New Chancellor

(November 16, 2009 - Thunder Bay, ON) Lakehead University and its Chancellor Electoral Board are pleased to announce that Arthur V. Mauro, prominent Canadian lawyer and businessman, has accepted the position of Chancellor of Lakehead University. Dr. Mauro starts a renewable three-year term on January 1, 2010. He succeeds Dr. Lorne Everett who served as Chancellor from 2000 - 2009.

The Chancellor's primary responsibilities include building bridges between the University and stakeholder groups as well as the broader publics - locally, nationally, and internationally; fostering the mission, vision, and values of Lakehead; and undertaking specific duties such as conferring degrees at Convocation, representing Lakehead University on special occasions, and participating in select initiatives to promote the University.

"Arthur Mauro is respected for his numerous career-and community-based accomplishments," says President Gilbert. "He has already demonstrated leadership in furthering Lakehead University's Advancement initiatives, and we are delighted that he will serve as our next Chancellor."

Dr. Mauro, OC, OM, was born on February 15, 1927, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He studied law at the University of Manitoba and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1953. Until 1969 he practiced law, specializing in transportation and communication law. Dr. Mauro has had an illustrious career. In 1967, he was appointed Chairman of the Royal Commission on Northern Transportation, and in 1969 became a senior executive with Great Northern Capital Corporation. From 1972 to 1976, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of Transair Limited, and joined the Investors Group in 1976 to become its President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman. From 1991-2000 he was Chancellor of the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Mauro has been an active supporter of the University of Manitoba since his student days. In September 2001, Dr. Mauro made a major contribution to St. Paul's College at the University of Manitoba to establish the Centre for Peace and Justice. In 1987, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and was later promoted to Officer in 1992. He received an Honorary Doctor of Commerce degree from Lakehead University in 1997. In 2004, he was awarded the Order of Manitoba. At present, Dr. Mauro is Chair of the Winnipeg Airport Authority.

"I will be pleased to serve as Lakehead's Chancellor and await the opportunity to contribute to institutional success over the next three years," says Dr. Mauro. "As a longstanding member of the Thunder Bay community, I am proud not only to support Lakehead in this capacity but also to represent its character and the excellence it embodies.

Dr. Gilbert acknowledges the years of service Dr. Everett dedicated to Lakehead, throughout which he performed his duties with enthusiasm, humour, and grace. "Dr. Everett will be missed, but being a Thunder Bay son, it is hoped and expected that he will continue to take an active part in Lakehead functions as frequently as his busy schedule allows."

The participation of Chancellor Electoral Board members was pivotal in conducting this search. "The University Chancellor is an uniquely important role that requires a special individual with many talents to help bring the University's vision forward, and the Board has done an excellent job in selecting Dr. Mauro."

2009 Lakehead Shads Continue Success Story: FiberGel Inc. Places First in Two Cup Categories

(November 11, 2009 - Thunder Bay, ON) HaemAssist, a product designed and developed by the 2009 Lakehead Shads' company FiberGel Inc., has won Best Application of Scientific Principles and Best Business Plan at the RBC Shad Entrepreneurship Cup, held in mid-October in Waterloo, Ontario.

The theme of the 2009 competition asked Shads to look to nature and natural fibres, tasking them with finding an innovative way to use the fibres: through first use (manufacture with new materials); repurposing (reuse of existing material in a new manner); recycling (creating new product from old); or retirement (converting existing natural fibre materials to a final use). Shads explored the development of HaemAssist while considering the boundaries of science, design, and art, while thinking innovatively and using bottom-line principles to develop a product that encapsulates economic value, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability.

HaemAssist is an entirely new product for use in the emergency response and healthcare industries. Currently, many Canadian emergency response services do not have means to provide fast and effective treatment to patients suffering severe blood loss. In response, HaemAssist provides care workers with a natural-based product that aids in the retention and coagulation of blood using the natural fibre Hagfish Exudate.

"Our Shads faced a tough yet reputable judging panel this year and we're extremely proud of their achievements," says Dr. Sultan Siddiqui, Lakehead's Shad Valley Director. "Through their time with the Shad program and in preparing their final projects for the Cup, our students learned a great deal about engineering, entrepreneurship, information technology, medicine, and science as well as about themselves and how they work alongside their peers. They fared very well in several areas overall this year. They set some high standards for themselves, and in working as hard as they did, they are all more prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that life, schooling, and work will bestow upon them - now and in years to come."

The annual RBC/Shad Entrepreneurship Cup is a national competition that unveils Shad-designed products that are well-positioned to be the next business success story. The Cup showcases the best in entrepreneurship, science, and technology, and demonstrates what senior high school students are capable of creating.

Lakehead U Announces Progress on Bio-Energy Research: Atikokan Project at Forefront of Bio-Economy

(November 9, 2009 --Thunder Bay, ON) Lakehead University and its researchers, in collaboration with researchers from partner institutions, are pleased to announce progress made on their bio-energy research related to the Atikokan Bio-Energy program. Bio-energy is at the forefront of many issues concerning Ontario's environmental and economic responsibilities, and the progress made by Lakehead University researchers will help Thunder Bay and Ontario stay competitive in the bio-energy sector.

Research results and impacts to date include the submission of patent applications, creation of employment and business opportunities for specific demographics, development of research facilities unique to Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario, information sharing with Thunder Bay's core industry partners, and training of highly qualified personnel. To date, the project has involved more than 24 researchers across Ontario and trained over 50 highly qualified personnel in various aspects of clean energy production based on peat/forest biomass. Overall economic impact of the project exceeds $7.5 million across northwestern Ontario.

In 2007, Lakehead University, in collaboration with other institutional partners, spearheaded a research project to develop transformative technologies toward the utilization of abundant biomass resources, which aim to curtail CO2 emissions from coal-fired generating stations such as those located in Atikokan and Thunder Bay. This project received funding under the aegis of the Atikokan Bio-Energy Research Centre from Ontario Centres of Excellence and other governmental and private industry partners. Research projects leading to clean energy under three well-defined research themes were conducted, led by Lakehead University researchers Dr. Charles Xu, Dr. Peter Lee, and Dr. Reino Pulkki.

"This research project is a huge undertaking that involves Lakehead-based researchers and researchers from institutions across Ontario," explains Dr. Rui Wang, Vice-President (Research), Lakehead University. "The overall goal of the project is to use biomass resources in the development of sustainable technologies that will allow the current Atikokan Generating Station to partially replace coal to continue Plant operations in the most environmentally efficient manner possible."

The Project aims to produce electricity from bio-energy sources, reduce air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions, and provide new economic opportunities - all of which would strengthen communities across the region and the province while securing Ontario's standing as a leader in cleaner energy. "Lakehead is proud to house cutting-edge research that is vital to so many aspects of society during these pivotal economic times," adds Dr. Wang. "These projects only add to Lakehead's reputation as a research-intensive institution, and will nurture both the economic and environmental health of our community, region, and province."

Each research theme of the project covers a range of practical and applied research topics in the field of bio-energy. They include Dr. Lee's research on environmental effects of wet-harvesting peat, Dr. Xu's research on biomass combustion for efficient energy production, and Dr. Pulkki's research on wood biomass harvesting, storage, and transportation strategies.

"Atikokan is very thankful to all who are responsible for enabling the Bio-Energy Research project to take place in Atikokan," states Atikokan Mayor, Dennis Brown. "We are especially appreciative of: the funds provided by the Provincial Government; Ontario Power Generation for allowing the participation of their staff; Ontario Centres of Excellence for being responsible for coordinating the research; for the seven universities and colleges, especially Lakehead University and Confederation College, for the valuable research they are conducting; and to the 29 partner organizations who have contributed $4.6 million through cash and in-kind support. The valuable information that has been obtained will assist not only Atikokan but also northwestern Ontario, Ontario, and Canada, and at the same time will hopefully ensure the continued operation of the Atikokan and Thunder Bay plants. The continued operation of the Atikokan Plant is so crucial to the wellbeing of the Town of Atikokan."

Lakehead Students Join in 'Thrilling' Record-Breaking Attempt

(October 22, 2009 - Thunder Bay, ON) Local media were on campus earlier today to get a sneak peek of a group of Lakehead students dancing to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." Members of Lakehead's Thrill the World team are more eager than ever before to participate in this year's Thrill the World event, which aims to take the title of "Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance World-Wide" on Saturday, October 24.

Thrilling the world, one dance at a time

Thrill the World began in 2006 in Toronto, when Ines Markelle, a Toronto dance choreographer, assembled a group of 62 zombies and danced to what is coined one of the greatest and most influential dance routines of all time. Since then, the event has hit the world stage with more than 72 countries participating in last year's event. This year, the record-breaking attempt carries a much more significant meaning following the unexpected death of the King of Pop last June.

Some members of Lakehead U's Thrill the World teamProceeds from the event will benefit local charities Habitat for Humanity and the Boys and Girls Club of Thunder Bay. Those interested in attending or participating are encouraged to learn more by visiting Lakehead University's Calendar of Events.

Lakehead Launches Strategic and Thought-Provoking Brand-Building Campaign

(October 21, 2009 - Thunder Bay, ON) Lakehead University is bolstering its "indie" reputation as a university that encourages its students to be innovative and independent thinkers. Its strategic branding campaign, "I think for myself," portrays a series of ads, online initiatives, and aligned promotional material featuring key graduates who reflect on the role of their Lakehead education and how it shaped their actions leading to their success.

Dr. Gilbert displays some campaign materials

The ads include: Michael Rapino (BAdmin 1989), CEO, Live Nation; Shy-Anne Hovorka (BEd 2003, HBA Music 2000), singer-songwriter and six-time nominee for the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award (APCMA), and Duncan Weller (BA 1989), Governor General's Award winner for Children's Literature (Illustration).

"Lakehead University provides a special educational experience at its Thunder Bay and Orillia campuses, from its inquiry-based learning to the opportunity for a more intimate learning environment. This gives students the chance to blossom individually and exercise their curiosity and critical thinking to their fullest," says Dr. Frederick Gilbert, President, Lakehead University. "The 'I think for myself' campaign highlights Lakehead success stories that are testaments to this reality- former students who went out into the world and shaped very creative lives and careers built on the experiences they had at Lakehead University."

The campaign, which commences October 2009 and runs until the end of March 2010, will appear in transit, print, and online, with outdoor poster support. The University has aligned all its student and parent touch points via iwillthinkformyself.com, mylakehead.ca, Facebook, and marketing materials such as the Lakehead University Admissions Handbook. All carry the same theme - that independent thinking enriches the educational experience and creates lifelong opportunities.

According to Eleanor Abaya, Director of Communications, "The branding campaign is a strategic platform that positions Lakehead as an institution for those who wish their post-secondary education to support their individuality - not force them to conform to the standards of others. Lakehead students tend to be individualists, and this is encouraged by the professors Lakehead attracts."

Dr. Gilbert adds, "All the Lakehead graduates whom we contacted were enthusiastic about being invited to participate in the branding campaign, and gave us a rich depository of stories to tell. The University can look forward to telling more such stories of its past, current, and future students, as well as those of its outstanding professors and researchers, in the years to come."
