Education is Written in the Stars: Lakehead University Trains Students in Observational Astronomy

(October 9, 2008 - Thunder Bay, ON) This fall, Lakehead University students are getting out of the classroom and into the heavens. For the first time, the Department of Physics will help students develop hands-on skills in observational astronomy. The course, taught by Lakehead Engineering professor Dr. Lionel Catalan, and Randy McAllister, Past President of the Thunder Bay Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and Owner/Operator of the Thunder Bay Observatory, provides students a minimum of four night sessions at the Thunder Bay Astronomical Observatory, and 36 hours of lectures and tutorials in a computer lab.

Students are trained in the operation of research-grade telescopes and astronomical cameras, as well as specialized software, and the analysis of astronomical data. They are taught telescope optics, imaging techniques, astronomical photometry to measure the light of stars, and astrometry to determine the orbit of asteroids. Divided into groups, students carry out observational projects on variable stars, exoplanets, asteroids, and star-forming regions in distant galaxies. So far, about 20 students have signed up for the course, which requires a background in physics.

Currently, Dr. Catalan is collaborating with an international team of researchers to observe high-mass X-ray binary stars; new data obtained from the student projects will be made available to researchers around the world.

"This new course offers our undergraduate students a unique opportunity to use a large research-grade telescope located just a few kilometers away from the city of Thunder Bay, and to learn advanced observing techniques in astronomy. We are quite enthused by the student interest shown - the number of students enrolled has surpassed our expectations," said Dr. Catalan.

For those interested in visiting the Observatory, sign-up viewing nights are available. Visitors can see one of the largest professional telescopes in Canada, and may view the spiral arms of a distant galaxy, the storm bands and moons of Jupiter, and many other sights.

Lakehead’s Biorefining Research Initiative to Bring Economic Growth to Region

(October 06, 2008 - Thunder Bay, ON) Today's official launch of Lakehead University's Biorefining Research Initiative (BRI) marks another step toward making Lakehead University a national leader in forestry-based research and innovation, and bringing increased bioeconomy-based prosperity to the Thunder Bay region.

In May 2007 the Government of Ontario awarded $6 million to Lakehead University in support of cutting-edge research in biorefining - a field that develops ways of refining renewable biomass materials, such as forest plants, fungi, and microorganisms. This significant research funding established the foundation of BRI and enabled Lakehead University to recruit world-class researchers in the biorefining field to develop transformative technologies and products from forest biomass. Dr. Dekker, a distinguished Australian biochemist who has conducted collaborative research projects with countries such as Brazil, Germany, and Spain, has accepted the leadership of BRI as its Founding Director. Dr. Wensheng Qin, an expert in molecular biology and plant biotechnology from Stanford University, also joins BRI as one of its Ontario Research Chairs.

To enhance and complement the research talent pool at BRI, a SHARCNET/MMRC Molecular Simulation Research Chair has been added. This position has been collaboratively funded by the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET) and Molecular Medicine Research Centre, now known as Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute (TBRRI). The Chair will utilize Lakehead University's high-performance computing facilities and TBRRI's state-of-the-art biomedical imaging facilities to design, model, and test novel molecules and enzymes used in the conversion of biomass or development of new biomarkers. The position is expected to be filled soon.

Dr. Robert Dekker, Director of the Biorefining Research Initiative
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Dekker and Dr. Qin to Lakehead University, and to have their knowledge and expertise at the fore of the Biorefining Research Initiative," says Lakehead University's Vice President of Research, Dr. Rui Wang. "The BRI will attract investment to the Thunder Bay region, and make our forest industry more competitive and sustainable," he added. Collaborations between BRI and industry partners are being developed. "We are also looking to secure additional research funding from provincial and federal granting agencies," Dr. Qin said.

The vision of the Biorefining Research Initiative (BRI) is not limited to fuels and forest biomass, but also considers the economic benefits derived from the forest ecosystem. Dr. Dekker said, "By creating valuable products from renewable biomass, we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, while at the same time creating new jobs and businesses."

Restaurant Industrialist Paul Weber Leads Lakehead University Orillia Campus Capital Campaign

(September 25, 2008 -- Thunder Bay, ON) Businessman Paul Weber hopes to match the stunning success of his roadside eatery, Webers Restaurants, with his newest project leading the Lakehead University Orillia Campus $20-million Capital Campaign. Weber's hugely popular drive-in restaurants just north of the GTA on Highway 11, which had become an Ontario landmark and cultural icon, were sold in 2004. But he is not one to rest on his laurels. When he found out about Lakehead University Orillia Campus and the plan to build it "green," he came forward to offer to head the campaign to raise $20-million to build the permanent campus.

When completed, the Lakehead University Orillia Campus will be the first such initiative in Canada to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum standards. One of Canada's leading architectural firms and specialists in the development of LEED-standard buildings, Moriyama and Teshima, recently unveiled the first structure in Lakehead's new campus. "I foresee Lakehead University achieving worldwide acclaim and attracting conferences and leaders from all disciplines," Weber said.

Currently, Weber is recruiting people to work with him on his campaign team. "The campaign will be targeted in several geographic and industrial sectors, including the Greater Toronto Area, the Horseshoe Valley, and the regional community," stated campaign manager Lee Pigeau. "The campaign team will aim at alumni and industry, as well as the 'green' sector. We are looking for leaders from all of these areas."

Many people are interested in seeing the social and economic benefits that will be realized by the City of Orillia and Simcoe County through the development of Lakehead University Orillia Campus. "People of all ages and backgrounds have been involved in making a financial investment, and by volunteering. The spirit of leadership is very much alive in the province of Ontario," Weber said. "People see the benefits and want this project completed."

Lakehead University has recently opened a Lakehead University Orillia Campus Project Advancement office in Toronto. Anyone who is interested in the Project or Campaign is invited to call the office at 705-330-4018 or e-mail to orcampaign@lakeheadu.ca.

Lakehead's Marketing Campaign Moves to Next Phase

(September 24, 2008, Thunder Bay, ON ) Lakehead University has created ripples in the marketing and recruitment world of higher education with edgy advertising campaigns such as YaleShmale and Do Something. Both campaigns won awards from the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education (CCAE), with YaleShmale taking Bronze in 2007 and Do Something taking gold at the 2008 CCAE national awards in Kelowna, B.C.

For fall 2008, Lakehead is reinforcing its message in a different way. Launching the week of September 22, the new branding campaign focuses on the intrinsic attributes that help define Lakehead University. According to Dr. Fred Gilbert, President, "Lakehead University is often described as an 'undiscovered gem'. Approximately 40 percent of our students come from communities in Southern Ontario with universities much closer to home. Many of them have told us they've elected to attend Lakehead not only because we are some distance from home but also because we have the programs they are interested in, we offer a nurturing environment, and we exert every effort to help our students succeed."

Gilbert adds that an integral element of Lakehead's mission is to develop independent critical thinking among its students. As part of Lakehead's longer term marketing, the institution is focusing on conveying this value proposition captured in the tagline "I will think for myself."

Director of Communications, Eleanor Abaya, stresses that the current direction is a natural progression from past attention-grabbing campaigns whose main focus was awareness building. Abaya says, "Now that Lakehead is a little better known and recognized outside its catchment areas, it is time to reinforce the message to prospective students, parents, guidance counsellors - and donors - that this is an institution that makes a difference in the lives of its students. We are proud to give our students that little extra edge to make them confident in their abilities to compete once they graduate. But equally important, we want them to understand they can make a larger contribution to humanity beyond what they learn in the classroom."

This campaign creates a stronger branding message and better integrates recruitment messaging with marketing other aspects of the university such as continuing education, graduate studies, and alumni relations. The new campaign uses both traditional and social media, including transit posters, digital ads, radio tags, and MSN, Facebook, and YouTube, and is supported by a draw to win free tuition for one year and two Campus Visit packages toward the cost of travel and accommodation to visit the Thunder Bay or Orillia campus. The campaign runs in the GTA and select Southern Ontario markets through to December 2008.

Lakehead University Announces Major Tuition Offer In Push to Acquire and Retain Best & Brightest: Offer Unique in Ontario

(September 23, 2008 - Thunder Bay, ON) Today, Lakehead University announced an offer of free tuition for Canadian students coming directly from a recognized Canadian high school with a 95% average. This is a unique entrance scholarship in that no other university in Ontario rewards students with free tuition at the same level for four years.

Lakehead is making the offer in a concerted effort to acquire and retain the best and brightest students from around the region, and across Canada. Amid rising tuition costs, Lakehead's tuition offer is expected to be a major draw for eligible students. The scholarship is available to Canadian scholars with a 95% average entering Lakehead University from a recognized Canadian high school curriculum. Robert Perrier, Manager of Undergraduate Recruitment at Lakehead University explains, "The scholarship is renewable for up to four years at the same level, provided that an 85% average is maintained in each subsequent academic year. If a student's university academic average falls between 80.0% - 84.9%, the student will receive an amended scholarship value at $2,500 per year for each subsequent academic year, for the remaining term of the scholarship." The scholarship will be automatically awarded - no application is necessary.

"Lakehead University is committed to educating students who are recognized for leadership and independent critical thinking," says John Singer, Lakehead University's Vice President, University Advancement. "Attracting and retaining the best students with this offer will bring returns to the University community as a whole. These students will help to create an engaged classroom environment; they will support and challenge their peers inside and outside the classroom, and they will demand the best from their professors," he said.

"Rewarding students for outstanding academic performance is one way for Lakehead to carry out its mission of excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate teaching, service, research, and other scholarly activity. It is also a sure-fire way of retaining or bringing the best to Lakehead University - in either the Thunder Bay or Orillia campus.
