Lakehead Shads to Visit University's Top Research Labs

(July 12, 2007 --Thunder Bay, ON) ShadValley students will get the opportunity to tour some of LakeheadUniversity's top research labs next week. These state-of-the-art facilities include the new Fibre-optics lab, the Claude Garton Herbarium, and the Industrial Waste Remediation lab.

"These tours will give our Shads the opportunity to grasp the technological and learning capabilities that our labs provide to Lakehead's students and researchers. Many Shads already excel in the areas of science and technology, so we are fully expecting that these initial laboratory visits will only increase their drive to immerse themselves in this type of learning environment in their post-secondary years," says Dr. Sultan Siddiqui, Shad Program Director and Chair/Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University.

During their lab visits, students will watch and participate in demonstration experiments. Along with other exciting visits included in week three of the Shad schedule, Dr. Siddiqui notes the visit to the Plant DNA Synthesis lab is one that has created a great deal of excitement among the students.

Other highlights for the third week of the ShadValley academic program include: a lecture in eleatics, an entertaining presentation on the development of modern logic from a philosophical and scientific point of view; workshops in axiomatic design, forensic medicine, cardiology, and orthopaedics; and a chance to lie back and enjoy the ride while floating on the KamRiver.

LakeheadUniversity is one of only twelve universities across Canada to host the ShadValley program and has been a proud Shad university since 1999.
