Lakehead University partners with Rennes School of Business to offer an international dual degree program

July 04, 2022 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

The Faculty of Business Administration at Lakehead University in Canada has partnered with the Rennes School of Business in France to offer a unique international learning opportunity for students at both institutions.

Participating students from Lakehead who complete the International Dual Degree Program will earn two degrees in four years (one from Lakehead and one from Rennes).

Lakehead students will go on a year-long exchange in third year before returning to Lakehead to complete their studies. Upon graduation, they will receive both an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from Lakehead and a Bachelor in Management from Rennes School of Business.

Students who come from Rennes to Lakehead in their third year will earn a Bachelor of Administration from Lakehead before returning to France to earn the Bachelor in Management from Rennes.

This program will provide an opportunity for students to develop international connections and global skills while earning two degrees.

“Our collaboration with Rennes will allow us to strengthen our international partnerships and support our goal of developing cultural competencies and global skills necessary for the future,” said James Aldridge, Lakehead’s Vice-Provost, International.

“I am delighted with this collaboration which allows us to propose an alliance between Canada and Ontario on the one hand, and France and the region of Brittany on the other,” said Thomas Froehlicher, Director General and Dean of Rennes School of Business. “It is also a great achievement to structure an excellent academic relationship at an undergraduate level with Lakehead University.”

Students participating in the program from Lakehead University can apply directly from high school and be admitted to their first year of the International Dual Degree program, or transfer into the program prior to third year from another Lakehead’s business degree program (subject to available spaces).

“We are very excited to offer this new opportunity to all current and future Lakehead students, and to welcome students from Rennes to Lakehead University,” said Dr. David Richards, Dean of Lakehead’s Faculty of Business Administration.

“This first-of-its-kind program at Lakehead will provide a rich learning experience for our students,” Dr. Richards added.

Lakehead University’s Faculty of Business Administration is AACSB and CPA accredited, while the Rennes School of Business is accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA.

Lakehead researcher leading team examining challenges of diverse care workers during the pandemic

April 4, 2022 – Thunder Bay, Ont.

Lakehead University’s Dr. Kathy Sanderson is leading a Canadian team of researchers examining the diversity and vulnerability of care workers during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Sanderson’s research project is one component of a larger project exploring the work of diverse care workers in Finland, Canada, United Kingdom, and South Africa.

This research is part of a successful Trans-Atlantic Platform in the Social Sciences and Humanities application, under the theme of Recovery, Renewal and Resilience. Her project is entitled “En Route to Recovery: Diversity and Vulnerability in Care Work During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Researchers will describe how diverse people (women, LGBTI2S people, and migrant status or minority ethnic people) who work in precarious formal and informal care address challenges by collaboratively examining their ideas to ease risks and to deliver and receive care.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is awarding Dr. Sanderson, Assistant Professor in Lakehead’s Faculty of Business Administration, and her team with $200,000 to perform this important research over 30 months.

Dr. Sanderson and her team are thrilled to receive this funding, which will explore the workplace and personal stressors experienced by Ontario’s personal support workers (PSWs).

“Those in COVID-facing positions have continued to provide care to the most vulnerable in our society,” Dr. Sanderson said.

“PSWs in our province experience low pay and precarious employment, coupled with extremely demanding physical and emotional work. This research project will explore policy and support opportunities for reducing the risks to care workers worldwide.”

The team will interview 20 PSWs in Ontario to explore their realities throughout the pandemic, focusing on those who are providing services within clients' homes.

“Data collection for the project will occur over the next two years, during which we will continue to engage with the PSWs to document their experiences,” Dr. Sanderson said.

Across the four countries, PSWs will participate in virtual activities to share their views and make recommendations to improve the working conditions for care workers.

“Our research is based on the United Nations’ research recovery roadmap, focusing on reducing inequalities and vulnerabilities, and building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable society.  The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented strains on formal and informal care work, worldwide,” Dr. Sanderson said.

“Paradoxically, the pandemic created new jobs and possibilities in care work, but the jobs remain physically and mentally strenuous, low paid, and often with fixed-term, precarious contracts and high turnover rates,” she added.

This project will focus on employees performing vital COVID-19 related jobs, providing individual care to vulnerable clients in both organizational and home settings.

“Congratulations to Dr. Sanderson for being awarded this grant and thanks to SSHRC for funding this important work,” said Dr. Andrew P. Dean, Lakehead’s Vice-President, Research and Innovation.

“Having a voice from COVID-care providers in Northwestern Ontario will provide an important and unique perspective on this global research project.”

Dr. Irfan Butt from Ryerson University’s School of Business Management is also a partner on the project.

Lakehead University’s Faculty of Business Administration granted extension of AACSB accreditation

July 5, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

Lakehead University’s Faculty of Business Administration has had its AACSB accreditation extended for five years and it now includes both the Orillia and Thunder Bay campuses.

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business peer review team met with faculty, staff, students, and alumni in mid-March to conduct this intense peer-review process. Several aspects of the Faculty of Business of Administration’s degree programs were assessed, including pedagogic strategies, program quality, learning outcomes, and student success.

“I would like to thank all faculty members, staff, students and others who supported these efforts,” said Dr. David Richards, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration.

Accreditation with AACSB International (AACSB) indicates that students receive a high-quality business education from an institution that values excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.

“AACSB accreditation is an incredible achievement by our Faculty and a recognition of the exceptional experience that students can expect when pursuing a business degree at Lakehead University,” said Dr. David Barnett, Provost and Vice-President (Academic).

For more than a century, AACSB accreditation has been synonymous with the highest standards in business education. Today, a total of 901 institutions across 58 countries and territories have earned AACSB accreditation in business.

“AACSB congratulates each institution on their achievement,” said Stephanie M. Bryant, executive vice-president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB.

“Every AACSB-accredited school has demonstrated a focus on excellence in all areas, including teaching, research, curricula development, and student learning. The intense peer-review process exemplifies their commitment to quality business education.”

For more information on Lakehead University’s accreditation extension, read the AACSB June 28, 2021 Schools Renewing AACSB Accreditation press release here.
