The broad purpose of this fund is to encourage Canadian academics to undertake projects of relevance to accounting academic or professional communities. The research under this program need not lead to publication in a scholarly journal, although it may lead to one or more such publications. The research project may result in a report that is both useful to practitioners and provides background in an area that could be the subject of further academic exploration.

AGE-WELL and the Alzheimer Society of Canada are teaming up to support emerging researchers through a funding opportunity for postdoctoral fellows.

The funding partners, AGE-WELL and the Alzheimer Society Research Program, will co-fund up to two postdoctoral fellows over two years.

The candidate’s supervisor must be working within an existing AGE-WELL Workpackage or Crosscutting activity and their project must align with the research program of AGE-WELL.

The overarching goal of this funding opportunity is to provide timely assessment of health effects and/or interventions to mitigate the harms and impact of the threat posed by the Alberta wildfires and evacuation, by building on Canada’s emerging expertise in disaster medicine and health research response. In addition, the funding opportunity seeks to:

• Examine the physical, emotional and other health consequences on those affected by the Alberta wildfires with a focus on resiliency;
• Generate evidence about novel or existing actions undertaken in health and/or other sectors to help those affected by the Alberta wildfires;

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) is seeking applications for Round 3 of its MSc Pop program, a program that supports early-stage, ground-breaking medical science research projects.

Under the Medical Sciences Proof-of-Principle (MSc PoP) program, applicants are eligible for up to $70,000 for commercialization activities. New industry matching cash contributions are required.

The MSc PoP program helps commercialize intellectual property (IP) related to promising life sciences and medical technology developed at Ontario publicly funded academic research institutions (universities, colleges, and research hospitals). The goal is to deliver economic benefits to Ontario, including sales and jobs, through newly created Ontario-based companies founded on this IP, or by licensing the IP to an existing Ontario-based company.

The Dr. R. K. Dewar Medical Research Grant was established in 1987 by Ms. Helen Dewar to honour the life and work of her brother Dr. Robert Kerr Dewar. Dr. Dewar had faith in the future and progress of medical science and had a keen interest in cutting edge research of his day. He was particularly interested in Neuro-Regeneration and Molecular Biology.

Who can apply?

Community groups and individuals are welcome to work with a qualified donee to make an application to the Fund. In the case of such a collaboration, the qualified donee would submit the application and act as a fiscal agent on behalf of the collaborating parties.

How much are the grants worth?

Thunder Bay Community Foundation will consider applications for grants of up to $10,000 for projects that meet the eligibility criteria.

The FY16 Defense Appropriations Act provides $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense Parkinson’s Research Program (PRP), formerly the Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Parkinson’s Research Program (NETPRP), to support research of exceptional scientific merit leading to an understanding of the cause, prevention, and treatment of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra that result in Parkinson’s disease.  Applications to the FY16 PRP are being solicited by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA).  The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/Funding Opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Veterans Affairs Canada is seeking a qualified research team to design and conduct an 18-month qualitative pilot study to better understand how equine-assisted therapy might assist Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Veterans and their family members in managing service-related mental health conditions.

The Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) has entered into partnership with the Government of Canada to procure Research and Development Services related to the mental, social and physical wellbeing of active military members, Veterans and their families. CIMVHR is seeking Notices of Interest from qualified researchers to enter into a contract with CIMVHR to produce this Work.

The successful team will have the following minimum qualifications:

• One or more senior investigators with an MD or PhD in a relevant discipline;
• Experience and knowledge of research in the domain of mental health;
• Experience and capabilities in conducting qualitative research;
• Demonstrated experience in research design and analysis;

As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency, Research, Development, and Acquisition (DHA RDA) Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The PRARP FY16 Overarching Challenges are as follows:

Paucity of Research Resources:  The paucity of research resources to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.

Paucity of Clinical Studies:  The paucity of clinical or epidemiological studies to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.

Diagnostic Technologies, Tests, Biomarkers, or Devices:  The need for technologies, tests, or devices to detect the progression to AD/ADRD subsequent to TBI.

Quality of Life:  The need for technologies, assessments, interventions, or devices to benefit individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD.

Caregiver Burden:  The need for technologies, assessments, interventions, or devices with the goal of reducing burden for caregivers of individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD.

Epidemiology:  The paucity of epidemiology research to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities

In addition to addressing one or more of the specified FY16 Overarching Challenges, applications should also address at least one of the following FY16 Focus Areas in support of the FY16 Overarching Challenges. An application that proposes research outside of the FY16 Focus Areas is acceptable, as long as the applicant provides a strong rationale. The Focus Areas will be mechanism-specific.

The PRARP FY16 Focus Areas are as follows:

Genomics/Proteomics:  Studies or technologies (e.g., genetic, proteomic, and epigenetic strategies) intended to characterize neurological change(s) associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD. In addition, relevant technologies or tests may be considered under this focus area.

Mechanisms of Pathogenesis: Identification of contributing mechanisms (e.g., pathology of Tau, non-neuronal cells, inflammatory factors, and vascular contributions) associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD pathogenesis.

Care Interventions and Quality of Life:  Research intended to stabilize or improve the quality of life of those affected by the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD.  Examples of research in this Focus Area include: Identification and management of co-morbidities and modifiable risk factors (e.g., sleep apnea, obesity); cognitive training interventions; studies of health and wellness and behavioral interventions.

Caregiver Support:  Research intended to reduce the burden of care on the caregiver for individuals affected by the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD.  Examples of research in this focus area include: Caregiver training, home-based support, behavioral interventions, and relationship interventions.

Diagnostics and Biomarkers:  Development of strategies to characterize neurological changes associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD (e.g., fluid based, imaging, physiological, and clinical approaches).

Novel Target Identification:  Basic research (non-human) directly leading to the identification of new targets for the development of existing or new investigational medicines, drugs, or agents.

Epidemiological Research:  Research focusing on the incidence, distribution, and other factors relating to the health of individuals affected by TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD.

Supports creation of an avenue for partnerships between clinicians and research scientists to address a translational research problem or question in a manner that would be unachievable through separate efforts

Supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators

Must include clearly stated plans for interactions between the Principal Investigators (PIs) and institutions involved. The plans must include communication, coordination of research progress and results, and data transfer

Clinical trials not allowed.

Applications must address one or more of the following FY16 PRARP Overarching Challenges:
