  4. Accreditation systems

In addition to these project types, projects with activities related to creative solutions that provide new ways of addressing sector-specific labour market issues may also be considered.

Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Alzheimer’s Research Program Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2017

The PRARP’s mission is devoted to (1) understanding the association between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD)/Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (ADRD) and (2) reducing the burden on affected individuals and caregivers, especially in the military and Veteran communities.  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the Defense Health Agency J9, Research and Development Directorate, manages the Defense Health Program Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation appropriation.  The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcements/funding opportunities is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

 

FY17 PRARP Overarching Challenges and Focus Areas:

 

All applications for the FY17 PRARP funding opportunities must address at least one of the following FY17 Overarching Challenges. The FY17 Overarching Challenges may be mechanism-specific.

The PRARP FY17 Overarching Challenges are listed below.

PRARP FY17 Overarching Challenges

Paucity of Research Resources:  The paucity of research resources to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.

Paucity of Clinical Studies:  The paucity of clinical studies to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.  This includes research into risk factors which may predispose individuals to AD/ADRD subsequent to TBI.

Diagnostic Technologies, Tests, Biomarkers, or Devices:  The need for technologies, tests, or devices to detect or prognose the progression to AD/ADRD subsequent to TBI.  This includes research into risk factors which may predispose individuals to AD/ADRD subsequent to TBI.

Quality of Life:  The need for technologies, assessments, interventions, or devices to benefit individuals living with the common symptoms or deficits of TBI and AD/ADRD.

Caregiver Burden:  The need for technologies, assessments, interventions, or devices with the goal of reducing burden for caregivers of individuals living with the common symptoms or deficits of TBI and AD/ADRD.

Epidemiology:  The paucity of epidemiological research to examine the interrelationship between TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD for the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.  This includes research into risk factors which may predispose individuals to AD/ADRD subsequent to TBI.

In addition to addressing one or more of the specified FY17 Overarching Challenges, applications should also address at least one of the following FY17 Focus Areas in support of the FY17 Overarching Challenges.  An application that proposes research outside of the FY17 Focus Areas is acceptable, as long as the applicant provides a strong rationale.  The Focus Areas will be mechanism-specific.

The PRARP FY17 Focus Areas are listed below.

PRARP FY17 Focus Areas

Genomics/Proteomics:  Studies or technologies (e.g., genetic, proteomic, bioinformatics and epigenetic strategies) intended to characterize neurological change(s) associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD.  In addition, relevant technologies or tests may be considered under this focus area.

Mechanisms of Pathogenesis: Identification of contributing mechanisms (e.g., pathology of Tau, non-neuronal cells, inflammatory factors, and vascular contributions) associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD pathogenesis.

Quality of Life:  Research intended to alleviate, stabilize, or characterize the symptoms, or deficits, common to TBI, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD).  Examples of research in this Focus Area include: Identification and management of co-morbidities and modifiable risk factors (e.g., sleep apnea, obesity); cognitive training interventions; studies of health and wellness and behavioral interventions.

Caregiver Support:  Research intended to reduce the burden of care on the caregiver for individuals living with the common symptoms or deficits of TBI and AD/ADRD.  Examples of research in this focus area include:  Caregiver training, home-based support, behavioral interventions, and relationship interventions.

Biomarkers:  Development of strategies to diagnose, prognose, or characterize neurological changes or risk factors associated with TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD (e.g., fluid based, imaging, physiological, and clinical approaches).

Novel Target Identification:  Basic research (non-human) directly leading to the identification of new targets for the development of existing or new investigational medicines, drugs, or agents.

Epidemiological Research:  Research focusing on the incidence, distribution, and other factors relating to the health of individuals affected by TBI and subsequent AD/ADRD.

 

The following is a summary of the FY17 PRARP Program Announcements.  Four award mechanisms will be offered for FY16.  This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the Government.

Convergence Science Research Award – Letter of Intent due September 21, 2017

The Principal Investigator (PI) must be  at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent).

Intent:  Support efforts to generate research resources, tools, or novel research efforts for researchers and/or practitioners in health sciences.

Applications must address one or more of the following FY17 PRARP Overarching Challenges:

·         Paucity of Research Resources

·         Paucity of Clinical Studies

·         Diagnostic Technologies, Tests, Biomarkers, or Devices

·         Epidemiology

Applications should address at least one of the following FY17 PRARP Focus Areas:

·         Genomics/Proteomics

·         Mechanisms of Pathogenesis

·         Biomarkers

·         Novel Target Identification

·         Epidemiological Research

Research considering pharmacologic interventions is specifically discouraged under this mechanism.

Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged.

  • Maximum funding is $500,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs).
  • Maximum period of performance is 3 years.
  • Indirect costs may be proposed in accordance with the institution's rate agreement.

 

Quality of Life Research Award – Letter of Intent due September 21, 2017

The PI must be an independent investigator at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent).

Intent:  The intent of the research funded through this award is to (1) support research to alleviate, stabilize, or characterize the symptoms or deficits common to TBI,  AD, and ADRD and (2) reduce the burden of care on the caregivers for individuals living with the common symptoms of TBI and AD/ADRD.  Research may be proposed to either facet of the intent.  Both are equally important.

Applications must address one or more of the following FY17 PRARP Overarching Challenges:

·         Paucity of Clinical Studies

·         Epidemiology

·         Quality of Life

·         Caregiver Burden

Applications should address at least one of the following FY17 PRARP Focus Areas:

·         Quality of Life

·         Caregiver Support

·         Biomarkers

·         Epidemiological Research

Research considering pharmacologic interventions is specifically discouraged under this mechanism.

Preliminary data, while not required, are encouraged.

·         Funding limit is $500,000 in direct costs.

·         Maximum period of performance is 3 years.

·         Indirect costs may be proposed in accordance with the institution's rate agreement.

 

New Investigator Award

The PI must be an independent, early-career investigator within 4 years of his/her first independent faculty position (or equivalent).

Intent: Support early-career investigators interested in novel research efforts or new technologies addressing TBI and AD/ADRD.

Applications must address one or more of the following FY17 PRARP Overarching Challenges:

·         Paucity of Research Resources

·         Paucity of Clinical Studies

·         Diagnostic Technologies, Tests, Biomarkers, or Devices

Research Partnership Award – Letter of Intent due September 21, 2017

The PI must be an independent investigator  at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent),

Intent:  To create an avenue for collaborative research partnerships between investigators to address a research problem or question in a manner that would be unachievable through separate efforts.

Applications must include clearly stated plans for interactions between the partners.  The plans must include communication, coordination or research progress and results, and data sharing between all investigators and organizations participating in the project.

Applications must address one or more of the following FY17 PRARP Overarching Challenges:

·         Paucity of Clinical Studies

·         Diagnostic Technologies, Tests, Biomarkers, or Devices

Letters of Interest (LOI) for potential research project funding relating to seismic activities in Canada’s Atlantic offshore

How to Apply: 

The Environmental Studies Research Fund (ESRF) is now accepting Letters of Interest (LOI) for potential research project funding relating to seismic activities in Canada’s Atlantic offshore.

To continue the ESRF’s efforts to help ensure that industry, government, and regulators have credible data to make evidence-based policy, regulatory and operational decisions, the ESRF is proposing a research program aimed at detecting, recording and evaluating the effects of offshore seismic activities on marine species.

Studies supported through this call for LOIs will focus on ‘teleost’ fish (e.g., Atlantic cod, haddock, and halibut) and zooplankton, in the southern Atlantic offshore areas (ESRF Regions 5-16).

Depending on the cost requirements of the study, successful applicants could be eligible for funding ranging from $200,000 to $3,000,000 per year, for up to four years, between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2022.

Interested parties are encouraged to review the details provided in the Applicants guide and submit their Letters of Interest, using the LOI form, by 23:59EST on September 14th, 2017.

2018 Biomedical Research Grant Competition

How to Apply: 

Biomedical Research Grants provide financial support to medical researchers to assist in defraying the operating costs of research, which may include the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment and the payment of laboratory assistants.

Grants are available for one, two or three years, commencing July 1, for up to $50,000 per year. The research must be carried out in Canada.

The application deadline is a a two stage process.

- A mandatory registration phase with a deadline of September 01, 2017

- A full application phase with a deadline of October 01, 2017.

Connection Grants

How to Apply: 

Connection Grants support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects potentially eligible for funding through other SSHRC funding opportunities.

Connection Grants proposals are expected to meet the objectives of the Connection program.

Connection Grants support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes or other events or outreach activities that facilitate:

  • disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges in the humanities and social sciences;
  • scholarly exchanges between those working in the social sciences and humanities and those working in other research fields;
  • intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers in the humanities and social sciences and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors; and/or
  • international research collaboration and scholarly exchanges with researchers, students and non-academic partners from other countries.

Individuals (applicants for individual Connection Grants and project directors for institutional Connection Grants) may apply for one Connection Grant per calendar year. An applicant may not apply for or hold more than one Connection Grant for the same event or outreach activity. *PRIORITY FUNDING CALL: BioCanRx is pleased to announce that the next call for applications is now open in all of the Catalyst, Enabling, Clinical Trial, and Clinical, Social & Economic Impact (CSEI) programs. At this time, BioCanRx is placing highest priority on the intake of new applications for funding, proposing research activities that would be likely to add value to, facilitate the implementation of, or enhance the translation to clinic of, technologies within the existing BioCanRx portfolio of research investments. The projects contained within the BioCanRx research portfolio are found here. Of important note, new applications will be expected to speak very specifically to the value-add of their proposed research deliverables and the complementarity to support the successful development of BioCanRx technologies or research projects.
 
Funding timelines: Applicants should be aware that all projects must plan to be completed no later than March 31, 2020. Given this time constraint, it is unlikely that new clinical trial projects will be funded in this next call for proposals, unless the trial is of a small pilot scale AND the applicant(s) can convincingly demonstrate feasibility of completion of the study by March 31, 2020.
 
Application deadlines: Next LOI submission deadline will be 11:59 am EST on November 1, 2017 invited full applications are anticipated by mid-February (date TBD) for funding to commence by April 1, 2018.

Next Generation Clean Energy Infrastructure

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is proposing to allocate $79M in funding to support investments in green infrastructure, including initiatives that will support the implementation of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.

 

Funding Streams

EV charging infrastructure deployment projects (projects that do not have an innovative component) may be considered in future funding programs

  • Energy Efficient Buildings Research, Development & Demonstration - Up to $49.3M over eight years from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2026 to develop and implement new building codes to retrofit existing buildings and build new net-zero energy consumption buildings across Canada. These funds will support research, development and demonstration projects to accelerate the development and adoption of technologies, building design and construction practices, provide more cost effective building solutions, validate their applications locally with real-world demonstrations, and build confidence with industry and PTs to accelerate their adoption of revised building codes.
     
  • Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Demonstrations (Phase II) - Up to $30M over four years from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2022 to continue to support demonstrations of next-generation and innovative electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure projects that address technical and non-technical barriers to the installation, operation and management of EV charging technologies.

    EV charging infrastructure deployment projects (projects that do not have an innovative component) may be considered in future funding programs.

Upon submission of the registration form, an EOI Applicants’ Package will be sent to you via e-mail.

The EOI template should then be completed and submitted by 23:59 EDT, September 25, 2017. No EOI submitted after that deadline will be accepted. Natural Resources Canada recommends that proponents keep a record of the date and time their EOI was submitted as proof in case of any dispute.
