Discovery Grants (Individual) Program

How to Apply:

The DG program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances. DGs are typically five years in duration and are considered “grants in aid” of research, as they provide long-term operating funds and can facilitate access to funding from other programs but are not meant to support the full costs of a research program.

Request for Applications

Eligibility:

This competition is open to all private-sector and public organizations (for example, academic, health and research institutions and their foundations, independently owned businesses or industries, multinational enterprises (MNEs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and granting agencies) from across Canada. Each project must actively involve two (2) Canadian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through a project team of two (2) or more representatives.

How to Apply:

The DHDP is launching a Request for Applications for the Digital Health Innovation Fund. The purpose of this opportunity is to support the development of research programs through their use of the Platform. While the fund prioritizes oncology and neurology research programs, the DHDP is a disease agnostic initiative. Applications focused on other areas of health and AI research where similar data may be available (eg. diabetes, cardiology) will also be considered. By identifying and selecting research initiatives for their compelling science, projects will advance the design and use of the Platform to support meaningful and impactful projects. In parallel, the intention is to stimulate collaboration among small- and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs), while adopting a view toward the commercialization potential of research discoveries.

Health System Impact Fellowship

How to Apply:

The Health System Impact Fellowship objectives are to:

  • Support impact-oriented career paths and elevate the career readiness of doctoral trainees and post-doctoral researchers studying health services and policy research (HSPR) (or related fields) by supporting embedded research opportunities within health system organizations (e.g., public, private for-profit, not-for-profit, and Indigenous health organizations) outside of the traditional university environment, with enriched competency development (e.g., leadership, project management) and opportunities for mentorship and networking.
  • Expand and enrich the traditional doctoral and post-doctoral training environment by engaging health system organizations in preparing a cadre of emerging leaders - inclusive of those from equity-denied communities and those who have historically faced systemic barriers in the research ecosystem, including, but not limited to, those marginalized by gender, Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis), communities impacted by racism, persons with disabilities, and members of 2SLGBTQI+ communities – for impact-oriented careers in academic and health system organizations; and
  • Provide health system organizations with direct opportunities to realize and harness the benefits that research-trained individuals can bring to such organizations for rapid learning, improvement and evidence-informed decision-making that advances health system improvements.

2025 Translational Research Grants in Brain Cancer

How to Apply:

Brain Canada is teaming up with the Cancer Research Society (CRS) and the Kindred Foundation to launch the 2025 Translational Research Grants in Brain Cancer. A national program to fund translational research that advances effective translation and application of knowledge of brain cancer across the expanse of pre-clinical, clinical and health services delivery domains to improve patient outcomes.

This funding program is intended to provide opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaborations between basic researchers and clinicians to translate research into novel approaches for the study, diagnosis and/or treatment of pediatric or adult brain cancer.

This competition has an overall envelope of $2,000,000 CAD to support up to two grants of $1,000,000 CAD each, over up to three years, funded by Brain Canada and Cancer Research Society.

An additional grant may be awarded to a research proposal focused on pediatric and young adult diffuse low-grade glioma, should such a proposal be ranked in the top three. This grant would be funded in collaboration between Brain Canada, Cancer Research Society, and Kindred Foundation.

Evidence clearly shows that increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in research environments enhances excellence, innovation and creativity. Brain Canada, Cancer Research Society, and Kindred Foundation are committed to excellence through equity, and we encourage applicants of diverse backgrounds to apply to our funding opportunities.
