Insight Development Grants

How to Apply:

Insight Development Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight program.

Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects of up to two years that are proposed by individuals or teams.

Insight Development Grants foster research in its early stages, but are not intended to support large-scale initiatives. Long-term support for research is offered through SSHRC’s Insight Grants.

Proposed projects can involve, but are not limited to, the following types of research activities:

  • case studies
  • pilot initiatives
  • critical analyses of existing research

Projects can also involve national and international research collaboration, and the exploration of new ways of producing, structuring and mobilizing knowledge within and across disciplines and sectors.

Funding is available for two distinct categories of scholars:

  • Emerging scholars who will develop new research questions and/or approaches. Such projects can build on and further the applicant’s (or team’s) graduate work and/or represent a continuation of their overall research trajectory.
  • Established scholars who will explore new research questions and/or approaches that are distinct from the applicant’s previous/ongoing research. Research projects should be clearly delimited and in the early stages of the research process. Insight Development Grant funding is not intended to support ongoing research for established scholars.

    • run education programs for kindergarten to post-secondary students in Ontario

  • The staff members must be involved in all key activities of the program (please refer to the program’s Key Components for more information)
  • Volunteers do not qualify as staff members under OVIN’s matching contribution requirement

Partnership Requirements

All partners must be Ontario–based

  • Industry partners must be automotive and mobility industry members, including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Tier 1 suppliers, and relevant industry associations.
  • Elementary and secondary public schools, school boards and post-secondary institutions.
  • Partners are expected to consult on program development to ensure it is in response to an industry skills/talent need.
How to Apply:
The Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) has issued a call for expressions of interest under its Regional Future Workforce Program (RFW).  The purpose of the RFW pilot program is to encourage students of all ages, from all regions of Ontario, to pursue careers in the automotive and mobility sector.

The specific goals of the program are as follows:
  •     To increase exposure to automotive and mobility sector opportunities and learning programs among students across Ontario regions and grade levels (kindergarten to post-secondary)
  •     To increase the number of equity-deserving and underrepresented groups exploring careers, learning and development opportunities in the automotive and mobility sector
  •     To identify opportunities to build sustainable programs based on pilot programming
  •     To facilitate collaboration across Ontario between non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and the automotive and mobility industry to build a strong talent pipeline
Applicants to this program can apply for up to $500,000 to develop and run initiatives as part of the RFW Program. Applicants are expected to create programs that engage a minimum of at least 500 students. The engagement programs must be of no cost for the student to participate. As well,  applicants must demonstrate experience in developing and also implementing education programs for audiences ranging from kindergarten to post-secondary.

Although postsecondary institutions can submit more than one application to this program, the maximum funding an applicant can receive is $500,000 in total, regardless of how many audience segments their program will serve. It is recommended that an institution submits one coordinated application. Therefore, if an applicant is interested in this program, they are asked to submit to Andrew Hacquoil, Research Facilitator, Institutional Programs (ahacquo1@lakeheadu.ca), the information required for an RFW expression of interest by 10:00 AM on November 25 (please do not submit the expression of interest to OVIN, but please provide answers to the questions on the EOI).

If more than one EOI is received then an internal committee will determine which EOI is submitted to the OVIN program by November 30.
