Announcement of Call for Proposals for Clean Transportation Initiative

How to Apply:

The Clean Transportation Initiative is developed in response to the Government of Canada’s commitment to reduce transport related emissions through:

  • regulations;
  • support the adoption of clean technologies and practices; and
  • engage in research technologies and practices.

The scope of this initiative is to initiate scientific research that will improve understanding of the technical aspects of reducing emissions within the aviation, marine and rail sectors.  The research will also help to identify, demonstrate, and bring to market new emission reduction operational procedures and technologies.

Transport Canada is soliciting research proposals that meet our criteria. The Call for Proposals (CFP) solicitation document presents the guidelines for submission of a proposal and proposal selection.

Only proposals that have technology readiness levels (TRLs) of 1 to 6 will be considered for contracts under this Call for Proposals.

The maximum funding available for individual contracts resulting from this Call for Proposals is $200,000. This does not include the co-investment of in-kind contributions made by the Bidder, which will form part of the total project cost.

Proposed projects must be completed by March 31, 2016.

Please check www.merx.com for the solicitation document.

Transport Canada is accepting proposals until April 11th. Knowledge Synthesis Grants

How to Apply:

The objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

  • describe the state of knowledge about the future skills needs of the Canadian labour market, in the context of slowing labour-force growth, increasingly globalized labour markets and economies, and continual technological change;
  • identify gaps between labour market demand for both generic and specific skills and the supply of skills (e.g., through K-12 education, postsecondary education, skilled trades and apprenticeship, employer-training and immigration-oriented programs);
  • identify the most promising policies and practices for better identifying and meeting future skills needs;
  • assess the quality, accuracy and rigour of current work in the field;
  • identify gaps in the knowledge and the quantitative and qualitative data available related to skills development and future needs of the Canadian labour market;
  • mobilize skills and labour market knowledge within the academic, industry and public policy sectors; and
  • form the basis of dialogue between academic researchers, industry stakeholders and skills-related policy-makers in government.

Knowledge Synthesis Grants are not intended to support original research. They are intended to support the synthesis of existing research knowledge and the identification of knowledge gaps in a format accessible to a particular audience—in this case, primarily government policy-makers, but also education and training institutions, and employers.

Publication Assistance Fund for NSERC Eligible Faculty

How to Apply:

The purpose of the fund is to facilitate the publication of high quality work. This fund applies to peer-reviewed journal articles and books.

This is a competitive award with a maximum value of $500 per application. Costs that may be covered include, publication subsidies to the publisher or journal, translations, the production of an index for a book, cover design, and other hard costs associated with publication.

Preference will be given to applications from new faculty members.

Requests must be made on Internal Form “F” – Publication Assistance.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed twice each year – May 15th and October 15th.

Only one application per faculty member per academic year will be accepted. Applicants should be aware that the Senate Research Committee operates under Senate approved guidelines. All funding for internal research competitions is limited and designated for specific uses. Due to the volume of applications received for most funding opportunities, the Senate Research Committee does not provide applicants with comments or justification for its decisions. All decisions are made internally through a peer review process and all decisions are final.

Eligible costs are page charges or other forms of charges associated with the cost of hard-copy production.

Applications for financial assistance to offset the publication/production costs of non-peer reviewed articles, books, or other non-refereed scholarly publications, will not be accepted. Web publications, purchases for books/proceedings or memberships in societies which translate into free publication are not eligible.

 Payment of the award will be conditional on submission of:

a) A letter of confirmation of publication from the journal editor, publisher, or comparable official responsible for “publishing” the article or book. The letter must state that the publication is peer-reviewed.

b) An invoice to the author for the full amount being charged to the author. Applications will be accepted up to six months after the publication of the article or book and will be reviewed by the Senate Research NSERC sub-committee.

The form for this fund can be found at: https://www.lakeheadu.ca/research-and-innovation/forms

Call for Research Proposals: Assessing Tools to Determine Level of Concern due to Effects of Emerging Contaminants from Municipal Wastewater Effluents on Aquatic Biota

Eligibility:

Eligibility to Receive CWN Funds

Any person employed or otherwise given academic status by a university, post-secondary educational institution, hospital, institute or other organization eligible to receive research funds from any one of the federal granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and / or the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

How to Apply:

The Canadian Water Network (CWN) is currently calling for proposals for research within its Canadian Municipal Water Consortium (CMWC) to support decision makers and practitioners by assessing the efficacy of a suite of tools focused on identifying indications of endocrine impacts on aquatic organisms in the immediate vicinity of wastewater treatment plant outfalls as a sensitive screening approach to provide:

1) clear indications that biological effects are occurring as a result of the presence of emerging contaminants (trace organic contaminants)  in municipal wastewater effluent discharges, and

2) a practical basis for distinguishing the relative level of concern between sites for effects of emerging contaminants, in order to identify sites where additional work should be done.

This project will focus on testing a suite of tools at municipal wastewater impacted sites. The outcome of this research will be an evaluation of the ability of the suite of tools to identify the relative concern for the impact of emerging contaminants (principally trace organic contaminants) in wastewater effluents on aquatic biota. In doing so, it will build on previous research and is intended to further the larger overall goal of assessing impacts of emerging contaminants on aquatic biota and to identify sites where interventions should be considered.  The goal of this particular research call is to assess an approach, focused on an endocrine disruption pathway, for identifying impacts of emerging contaminants.  The successful project will use this approach to assess a practical suite of tools and methods that can be more broadly applied at sites to identify and prioritize sites that warrant further study.
