The Banting Research Foundation awards annually the Discovery Award, a grant of up to $25,000, to outstanding new investigators in any area of medical research who are within the first three years of their independent appointment at a university or research institute in Canada. The intent is to provide seed funding so that applicants are able to gather pilot data to enhance their competitiveness for other sources of funding.

This competition is open to new investigators at any Canadian university or affiliated research institute who meet the eligibility criteria.

IDRC offers this fellowship annually to Canadians and permanent residents of Canada pursuing master’s or doctoral studies at a Canadian university. Candidates must have an academic background that combines forestry or agroforestry with social sciences. We offer this fellowship to facilitate field research on the relationship between forest resources and the social, economic, cultural, and environmental welfare of people in developing countries.

The successful candidate will be the one whose work most benefits less privileged people in developing countries.

The Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) program is launching a new call for a systematic review of existing evidence of the effects of women’s economic empowerment on economic growth.

Conference and Workshop Grants are for amounts up to $20,000. In accordance with the mission of the Foundation, priority is given to events that foster the creation of an international community of research scholars in anthropology and advance significant and innovative anthropological research.

Conferences are defined as public events that are comprised primarily of oral and poster presentations to a larger audience of anthropologists. Priority is given to major conferences sponsored by large international anthropological organizations (e.g., the European Association of Social Anthropologists, European Anthropological Association, Pan African Anthropological Association, and Latin American Anthropological Association) that serve as their annual or periodic meetings. The majority of the funds granted to such conferences is expected to be used towards expenses for international scholars who are making presentations at the conference and would not otherwise be able to attend.

Workshops are defined as working meetings that focus on developing and debating topical issues in theoretical anthropology. Workshops involve a small group of scholars who meet for a sufficient period of time to deal intensively with the topic. Priority is given to those workshops that devote the majority of time to discussion and debate rather than to the presentation of papers. It is expected that workshops will result in a publication.

The AMS Postdoctoral Fellowship provides support to a core of the most promising researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. Candidates should be embarking on a period of full time post-PhD degree studies and wish to add to their experience by engaging in research either in Canada or abroad. The fellowships are intended for emerging scholars to complete work already started on projects related to the history of health care, disease and/or medicine or the history of the education of health professionals, or to begin a new project in the field. For the 2015 competition, the AMS is particularly interested in supporting postdoctoral fellows in the areas of aboriginal health and health professional education in humanistic care.

The AMS project grant is designed to support small budget proposals on projects in history of healthcare/disease/ medicine with special interest in, but not limited to Canadian history of healthcare/ disease/medicine. Such projects might include requests for seed money to develop research initiatives. Proposals are expected to advance an aspect of the history of health, health care or disease or the history of education of health professionals that could benefit the broader community of practitioners in the field. There is an expectation that during the period of these grants or within a year of their completion, one or more conference papers or publications/presentations will result from this funding.

The Summer Experience Program (SEP) provides not-for-profit organizations, municipalities and Aboriginal/First Nations communities with funding to create meaningful summer employment opportunities for students.

SEP positions must focus on activities supporting key sectors within the Ministry of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, including citizenship, voluntarism, seniors, women, tourism, culture, sport and recreation and offer training for future careers or work experience in skills transferable to the general workforce.

Position placements are expected to provide full time employment for a minimum of 30 days, at a minimum of 6 hours per day (30 hours per week) and a maximum of 7.25 hours per day (36.25 hours per week). Overtime on an occasional basis is allowed, but SEP funding does not cover this cost.

Round 5, Genomic Applications Partnership Program

The Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) would like to announce the Ontario dates for Round 5 of Genome Canada’s Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP). This program seeks proposals which focus on the partnerships of users and academia to promote the application of genomics-derived solutions to address key sector challenges or opportunities facing users - user pull. With this program, Genome Canada aims to fund projects that have defined user partners and will have socioeconomic benefit to Canada. In particular, projects must have a clear partnership between the user partner and the academic researcher(s).

In order to better prepare the projects for this competition, OGI will also conduct a mandatory face to face due diligence review of the Expressions of Interest (EOI) with eligible applicants prior to submission to Genome Canada. Draft EOIs are due to OGI on May 5th, 2015. The due diligence review will take place May 26, 2015.
