About the Presentation

Dr. Karen McQueen, Associate Professor, will present on collaborative research of an innovative intervention to improve breastfeeding outcomes among first time mothers. The 4-site randomized controlled trial was conducted in Thunder Bay and the Greater Toronto Area. The presentation will focus on the intervention, methodology, findings, and their implications.

Dr. Karen McQueen, School of Nursing

Karen McQueen, RN, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Lakehead University. She has extensive experience in the area of perinatal and women’s health as an educator, researcher and Registered nurse. Her research focuses on infant feeding among diverse populations including first-time mothers’ self-efficacy, individuals who use substances during pregnancy and those with perinatal mood disorders. Additional research includes qualitative exploration of the experience of sexual assault disclosure.

About the Speaker

Jonathan Wilkinson was re-elected for a third term as Member of Parliament for North Vancouver on September 20th. One month later, Jonathan was appointed Minister of Natural Resources. Jonathan has served as MP since 2015 and was previously the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard from 2018 to 2019 and Minister of Environment and Climate Change from 2019-2021. Prior to joining the Cabinet, Jonathan served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change. Prior to entering politics he spent more than 20 successful years in the private sector, having held leadership positions with a number of companies dedicated to the development of green technologies.  His time as CEO of both QuestAir Technologies and BioteQ Environmental Technologies, in addition to his time as senior Vice President of Business Development with Nexterra, has provided him with extensive experience in the energy and environmental technology sectors. Jonathan also previously worked at Bain and Company, a leading global management consultancy.  A Rhodes Scholar, Jonathan made use of his educational background in public policy when he worked as a constitutional negotiator and a federal-provincial relations specialist. He has served on several industry and charitable boards, including the United Way of the Lower Mainland and the B.C. Technology Industries Association. He has also formerly served as a board member and treasurer of the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation.  Jonathan has deep roots in North Vancouver, where he has spent the last two decades raising his family alongside his wife, Tara. An avid runner and outdoorsman, Jonathan also served as a coach for the North Shore Girls Soccer Association.

About the Event

Join us for an inspiring tour of Lakehead's new juried and featured art in the CASES Building! Select exhibitors will be on hand to discuss their works. You are invited to view a wide variety of creative pieces of art, chat with the artists about their creative processes, and learn about how arts and integrated research can engage, provoke and share research through different mediums. You are also very welcome to wander the other exhibition gallery spaces in the Bora Laskin Education Building and Lakehead International.

Admission is free and all are welcome!

  • Light refreshments will follow the tour.
  • Art tour with reception from 4:00-5:30.

About the Event

The Three Minute Research (3MR) is an academic competition that cultivates graduate students' presentation and research communication skills, and challenges them to describe their research within three minutes to a general audience. The competition is open to all graduate students of Lakehead University, and they have to explain their research or scholarly/creative activity through a video presentation of up to three minutes.
 
Shaw Spotlight brings to life compelling human-interest stories from our communities in diverse short-form documentaries. We are proud to provide each category winner of Lakehead University’s 3MR competition an opportunity to be highlighted in a Shaw Spotlight feature. Each category winner will work with a Shaw Spotlight producer to tell their story and share their project, nationwide.

About the Event

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is National competition for thesis-based graduate students in which participants present their scholarly and creative activity, and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less. The challenge is to present complex research in an accessible and compelling way with the assistance of only one static slide. The competition celebrates exciting and innovative graduate student research while promoting communication, public speaking, and storytelling skills.
