In cooperation with the University of Konstanz, KoWi, the cooperation office for the German science organizations for the European Union, based in Brussels, will give an introduction to EU-Funding opportunities for collaborative research, via the Horizon Europe programme.

The speakers will introduce the programme itself and then focus on its Pillar 2 – Global Challenges, which mainly offers top-down funding for international research consortia, and for which Canadian entities are fully eligible thanks to Canada’s association to the Horizon Europe programme.

Speakers:

Photo of Speaker Yvette GafinenYvette Gafinen has worked as EU funding advisor at the European Liaison Office of the German Research Organisations (KoWi) in Brussels since 2011. Rethinking Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Insights from Grassroots Organizations

Event Date:
Tuesday, March 4, 2025 - 2:30pm to 4:00pm EST
Event Location:
OA 1022

Event Contact E-mail:

This panel explores how Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) emerges organically within intersectional community organizations led by 2SLGBTQ+, racialized, gendered, and/or other historically marginalized groups. Drawing on research conducted with a diverse range of community organizations, the speakers will examine how these groups navigate EDI principles in ways that are context-specific, culturally responsive, and central to their organizational structures and everyday interactions. Through case studies and critical reflections, the discussion will highlight the limitations of top-down institutional approaches to EDI and explore how community-led models foster more meaningful, inclusive, and ethical engagement. Panelists will also consider the challenges these organizations face in sustaining their approaches while negotiating external pressures, resource constraints, and broader systemic barriers. By centering the knowledge and strategies developed within these communities, this session aims to contribute to a more nuanced and transformative understanding of EDI in practice.
