The Geology Major Program

Students undertaking a geology Major will receive training in the fundamental aspects of geology including mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, structural geology and ore deposit genesis. Our program combines both the theoretical and practical aspects of geology with emphasis on hands on experience with rocks through extensive labs and fieldtrips. On completion of their degree many students will chose to pursue further studies at a graduate level or enter the workforce as a practicing geologist.

Geology Programs

The department offers programs leading to Bachelor and Master of Science degrees.

Honours BSc (Geology Major)

Four Year program
Students choose elective courses in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Geology.

First Year:
(a) Geology 1111, 1131
(b) Chemistry 1110, 1130
(c) English 1015 or 1016
(d) One FCE chosen from: Mathematics 1210 and 1230 or 1151 and 1152 or 1171 and 1172
(e) Physics 1113 and 1133 or Physics 1211 and 1212
(f) One-half FCE elective

Notes:
1. Chemistry
Students planning to major in Geology who lack OAC Chemistry or equivalent, must register for Chemistry 1050/1070 as a science elective. After successful completion of Chemistry 1050/1070 one of the following will apply:
(a) In Year 2 the student registers for Chemistry 1110/1130 as one of the one and one half course electives.
(b) If the final mark in Chemistry 1050/1070 is at least 80%, the Department may waive the Chemistry 1110/1130 requirement. In this case the student must select a full course in Science from the electives in Year 2 of the program.
2. Mathematics
Students who lack high school MHF4U (Advanced Functions) or its equivalent must register for Mathematics 1051 and 1077. Mathematics 1210 and 1230 or 1151 and 1152 or 1171 and 1172 is taken in Year 2.
3. Physics
Students planning to major in Geology who lack Grade 12 U or M Physics may still register for Physics 1211 and 1212 or 1113 and 1133.

Second Year:
(a) Geology 2112, 2214, 2215, 2217, 2219, 2310, 2318
(b) One FCE elective
(c) One-half FCE from Type E course list*

Third Year:
(a) Geology 3218, 3310, 3311, 3410
(b) 1.5 FCE from: Geology 3110, 3130, 3313, 3217, 4011, 4132, 4137. 4215, 4411
(c) Mathematics 2310 and 2311
(d) One-half FCE elective

Fourth Year:
(a) Geology 4161, 4181, 4313
(b) 1.5 FCE not previously taken from: Geology 3110, 3130, 3313, 3217, 4011, 4132, 4137, 4215, 4411
(c) One FCE from: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics; either Natural Resources Management 2350 or Geography 2232 may be substituted for 0.5 FCE of this requirement

Note: The Indigenous Content Requirement is being met by the inclusion of 0.5 FCE chosen from the list of Type E courses taken as an elective in the 2nd year of the program.

 

BSc (Geology Major) 4 Yr 

Four Year Non-Direct Entry program

This program option is for Honours students that are academically ineligible to continue in or complete the Honours program.

The program requirements for the first three years are the same as for the HBSc (Geology Major) program, except that in order to remain in the program, students must maintain at least an overall C average in the major.

Fourth Year:
(a) Geology 4161, 4313
(b) 1.5 FCE not previously taken from: Geology 3110, 3130, 3313, 3217, 4011, 4132, 4137, 4215, 4411
(c) One FCE from: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics; either Natural Resources Management 2350 or Geography 2232 may be substituted for 0.5 FCE of this requirement.
(d) One FCE elective from*: Civil Engineering 2012, 3738; Natural Resources Management 2110, 2350; Geography 2331, 2351, 3317, 3331, 4211, 4231, 4333; one FCE not previously taken from: Geology 3110, 3217, 3218, 4011, 4132, 4215, 4411
