The RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is a success each year thanks to the support of title sponsor RBC and presenting sponsor Wasaya Airways.

The annual RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament raises funds in order for students to live their dreams by pursuing their post-secondary education.

“Cost should not be a barrier to education,” said Mark Tilbury, Director, Alumni and Community Relations at Lakehead University. “Post-secondary education plays an important role in a person’s future. This support shows that RBC and Wasaya Airways are extremely community-minded and we thank them for that.”

Launched in 1983, the RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament has assisted hundreds of students in pursuit of an education. To mark the 30th year, the goal for the 2013 RBC Lakehead Alumni Golf Tournament is $50,000, which will help approximately eight to 10 students.

“We at RBC are proud to once again be the title sponsor of this important golf tournament, bringing the community together to support our great university and its students,” said Murray Walberg, RBC’s Regional Vice President for Northwestern Ontario.

“Wasaya Airways is dedicated to supporting Aboriginal youth excellence and continued education. We take pride in playing a role in the growth and development of our future visionaries and leaders,” said Tom Morris, President & CEO of Wasaya Airways.

Winta Desta, a student athlete, benefitted from scholarships and bursaries that let her further her education while playing for Lakehead’s basketball team.

“The scholarships and bursaries I received from Lakehead University enabled me to continue my academic pursuit without having to sacrifice my other loves – athletics and volunteerism – and for that I will be forever grateful,” Desta said.

“The impact that this fundraiser has on students is far grander than most people assume; not only does it help lighten our financial load, but it enables us to dream, and to dream big,” Desta said.

Tilbury thanks all of the participating players and sponsors who make this tournament a success. Lakehead is still accepting players for this tournament and there are also sponsorship opportunities to help reach the $50,000 goal.

The tournament will be on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at Whitewater Golf Club, at 1961 King George’s Park Drive in Rosslyn.
