On Monday, November 10, 2014, the Lakehead Thunder Bay Campus will host an interactive Student Support Services Fair from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm in the Main Floor Learning Commons of the Chancellor Paterson Library. Come out and explore the various supports and services available to first generation students (a student whose parents/guardians did not attend a post-secondary institution). In addition to the interactive booths, you can enjoy some snacks, enter into prize draws to win some Lakehead gear, and meet faculty and staff who themselves were first generation learners. Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend Colour-Blind Canada: Boundaries, Bridges, and Laissez-Faire Racism in Indigenous-Settler Relations.

Dr. Jeff Denis, of McMaster University, will discuss sources of tension in Indigenous-settler relations, mechanisms maintaining laissez-faire racism, and the promise and limitations of commonly proposed bridges, such as contact, education, apologies, and collective action.

His talk came from 18 months of fieldwork, 160 interviews, and a photovoice project with Anishinaabe, Métis, and white residents of Northwestern Ontario.
