This call is open to Canadians and permanent residents of Canada pursuing master’s or doctoral studies at a Canadian university. The award under this call will cover costs of field research conducted for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation in one or more countries of the Global South.

This call is open to Canadians and permanent residents of Canada pursuing master’s or doctoral studies at a Canadian university. The award under this call will cover costs of field research conducted for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation in one or more countries of the Global South. The successful candidate will propose research that benefits less privileged people in developing countries, focusing on women and Indigenous people, aiming to increase the resilience of individuals and forest communities facing difficult contexts and challenges. Note that work focused on genomics and/or genetic modification is not eligible.

The Housing Research Awards recognize research excellence and provide funding to support exceptional work. This work generates essential data and insights that are key to advancing the objectives of Canada’s National Housing Strategy.
The initiative focuses on completed or near completed research activities. The awards recognize impactful and innovative Canadian housing research, research training, knowledge mobilization and outreach activities. They play a crucial role in building and sustaining Canada’s culture of research-based housing knowledge. This spans across key fields, including the social sciences and humanities, health and technology.
The CMHC President’s Medal for Outstanding Housing Research recognizes a significant research contribution that helps us achieve our aspiration to make housing affordable for everyone in Canada.
The Gold Roof Award for Housing Research Excellence is for a significant research contribution that has increased knowledge or understanding in one of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas.
Gold Roof Award for Knowledge to Action recognizes initiatives that close the gap between what is known from excellent research and what is done with that knowledge in the housing sector.
Lead applicant eligibility:
The lead applicant must be an active not-for-profit organization, registered charity, Indigenous government or Indigenous organization in Canada.
*Note: While academic institutions, private organizations and municipal governments can’t act as lead applicants, they are eligible to be project partners. Lead applicants are strongly encouraged to engage with various partners, including community-based organizations that represent and serve populations that are made vulnerable in the housing system.
The Research and Planning Fund advances evidence-based research used to understand and address housing challenges in Canada. Projects may focus on vulnerable groups in the housing system. The fund also promotes collaboration and engagement in housing research. Additionally, it supports developing research skills in the housing sector.
