ANNOUNCEMENT of Research Funding Opportunity for ARCTIC research Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action on Resilience in Rapidly Changing Arctic Systems (CRA Arctic II)

The Belmont Forum is pleased to announce the launch of a second Collaborative Research Action focused on Arctic region. The title of this international funding opportunity is Resilience in a Rapidly Changing Arctic. The call aims at bringing together researchers and other expertise across the globe to develop proposals from integrated teams of scientists and stakeholders to address key areas of arctic resilience understanding and action. This collaboration of academic and non-academic knowledge systems constitutes a transdisciplinary approach that will advance not only understanding of the fundamentals of arctic resilience but also spur action, inform decision-making, and translate into solutions for resilience.

Proposing consortia shall address at least two of seven interconnected elements of resilience as described in the Arctic Resilience Report of the Arctic Council: natural, social, financial, cultural and human capitals; infrastructure; and knowledge. Given the complexity and scope of the challenges, research consortia must be truly transdisciplinary, thus including researchers from: a) social sciences/humanities/economy and b) natural sciences/technology, as well as c) societal partners (i.e. citizens, civil society organizations), using a co-design, co-development and co-implementation approach.

Funders from 10 countries have committed resources for this call: Canada, Denmark, France, Japan, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and USA. The call aims to support medium-sized research projects with 3 to 4 years duration, with a recommended budget of up to 1.5 M€ each.

New funding for research teams to study resilience in rapidly changing Arctic ecosystems

NSERC is pleased to participate in a new Belmont Forum funding opportunity to study the resilience of Arctic ecosystems in the face of climate change.

Eligible Canadian applicants (or groups of applicants) can request up to a maximum of $75,000 per year, for up to 3 years. A total of up to $900,000 is available.

The funding will support transdisciplinary teams of natural and social scientists – and importantly, Arctic stakeholders – that will not only conduct research, but use the results to spur action, inform decision-making, and translate into solutions for resilience.

For this funding opportunity, the term "stakeholder" is used in its broadest possible sense, allowing for co-development of projects with partners from, but not limited to, civil society, government, industry, NGOs, and Indigenous organizations.

CYCLE II Call for Letter of Intent: Bench to Bedside Translation of Innovative Cancer Biotherapeutics

BioCanRx, Canada’s Immunotherapy Network, is pleased to announce its 2019 Call for Letters of Intent. Selected Letters of Intent will be featured in the Scientific Program of our Cycle II application going forward for review in July 2019 to the federal government’s Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) Program.

Building on previous BioCanRx investments in Cycle I, the overarching goal of the Cycle II Research Program will focus on extending immunotherapy successes in the clinic beyond initial responders. Apply for funding under the Foreign Credential Recognition Program –Innovation and skilled newcomer employment

The objective of this application process is to support the development and implementation of innovative and collaborative approaches that improve the integration of highly skilled newcomers into the Canadian labour market.

Background

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global pressures of population growth, urbanization, water shortages, and climate change impacts are increasing the agricultural demands for treated waste as a steady source of water and nutrients.[1] In addition, freshwater, nutrients, energy, and chemical compounds recovered from treated waste have found application in areas such as irrigation, horticulture, forestry, and industrial water supply. Further research is underway to explore mining waste for other valuable components that could be reused and recovered in other industries.

Collaborations between academia, government, and industry to recover water, nutrients, energy, and valuable chemicals from waste have the potential to yield commercial successes and be scaled up to global markets.

Proposals

IC-IMPACTS and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) invite researchers to submit proposals for projects that can be completed in two years (or less) and that focus on extracting Wealth from Waste.

Your proposal should offer biotechnology-driven research-based solutions, and reflect cost and space efficiencies required for deployment in cities such as Delhi, Kanpur, and Varanasi, or in locations with similar geographies.

Central to the successful proposal will be demonstrating a scalable technology that can be developed as a commercially viable option to extract wealth from wastewater and be applicable to rejuvenating polluted bodies of water such as the River Ganga in India.

Canada-UK Call for Proposals on Enhanced Industrial Productivity 2019

Eligibility: 

Project proposals must be prepared and submitted together by companies in Canada and the UK according to the following eligibility criteria.

Project eligibility

To be eligible through this call, projects must contribute to the development of commercial products, processes and/or technical services within 2 to 5 years of the completion of the project. Note: in the case of the enabling technologies theme, the commercialization horizon may be relaxed.

Project proposals must demonstrate:

  • a clear game-changing and/or disruptive innovative idea leading to new products, processes, or services
  • a team, business arrangement or working structure with the necessary skills and experience to run the project successfully and complete on time
  • awareness of the main risks the project will face (including contractor or equipment failure) with realistic management, mitigation, and impact minimization plans for each
  • sound, practical financial plans and timelines
  • good value for money
  • a clear exploitation/commercialization plan for the project and the project partners
  • considerable potential to positively impact both the UK and the Canadian economy
  • the benefit of participants from the two countries working together
  • an adequate balance and significance for both partners
  • alignment with the respective priority themes identified in this call for proposals and fit within the definition of Industrial Research and Experimental Development
  • clear definitions of where intellectual property can be used and how it will be shared between the participants and countries (this information needs to be included in a collaboration agreement submitted as part of the project proposal).

Projects must comply with the following requirements:

  • Applicants should ensure that funded work is discharged within the national boundary from which they are in receipt of funding unless approved by prior agreement with the respective national funding agency.
  • Organizations from other EUREKA member states may also participate provided they arrange their own funding and the project meets the eligibility participation criteria of Canadian and UK organizations.
  • Participation by all organization types (research institutes/universities/SMEs, larger companies) is welcome.

Projects involving research and development of products, processes or technologies with military and/or non-peaceful applications are not eligible for funding.

Consortium eligibility

In order to be eligible for funding through this call for proposals, project consortia must include, at the minimum, participants as described below.

Theme 1: Enabling technologies

An enabling technologies project consortium must include at a minimum 4 participants:

  • 1 researcher from the National Research Council of Canada who will be undertaking project research activities through the NRC's AI for Design Program and whose research activities have been approved by the AI for Design program leader
  • 1 Canadian small or medium-sized enterprise (SME), research and technology organization (RTO), or academic research organization
  • 1 UK SME
  • 1 UK RTO

And must be led by 1 of these 4 participants.

Theme 2: Enhanced productivity

An enhanced productivity project consortium must include at a minimum 2 participants:

  • 1 Canadian SME
  • 1 UK SME

And must be led by 1 of these 2 participants.

Definition of participant types

Eligible participant types are defined below. The specific eligibility for each organization under Theme 1 or Theme 2 should be confirmed with your National Funding Body (Innovate UK or the NRC) as appropriate.

  • Canadian SME: Entity legally incorporated in Canada with 500 or fewer employees
  • UK SME: Entity legally incorporated in the UK with 250 or fewer employees
  • NRC researcher: Researcher at the National Research Council of Canada
  • Academic researcher: Researcher at an accredited academic institution (e.g. university)
  • RTO: the European Association of Research and Technology Organizations (EARTO) defines research and technology organizations (RTOs) as non-profit organizations "which as their predominant activity provide research and development, technology and innovation services to enterprises, governments and other clients."

Any partner whose cooperative industrial R&D project is consistent with the aforementioned requirements can apply to the present call for proposals in accordance with the national laws, rules, regulations and procedures in effect.

How to Apply: 

The aim of the joint Canada-United Kingdom (UK) Call for Proposals on Enhanced Industrial Productivity is to foster and support eligible UK and Canadian organizations in pursuing collaborative projects that will deliver enhanced competitiveness via the development and application of novel technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, and food production.

Funding to foster enhanced industrial productivity projects is available for eligible consortia of Canadian and UK organizations and researchers as outlined below. Project results are expected to contribute to the development of commercial products, processes and/or technical services.

This EUREKA bilateral call for proposals is managed by Innovate UK and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), including the NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).
