The funding opportunity Catalyst Grant: HIV/AIDS Community-Based Research is expected to:

• Support partnerships between communities affected by HIV and other STBBI in Canada and researchers to facilitate the conduct of CBR; and/or
• Develop future applications for more comprehensive CBR grants in the area of HIV and other STBBI in Canada.

Examples of activities that might be conducted under this request for applications are (but are not restricted to):

• Facilitation of dialogue between communities and researchers in order to establish research partnerships;
• Workshops to design a research project and/or develop a proposal for a future CBR operating grant;
• Planning and execution of pilot projects or feasibility studies to generate preliminary data, proof of concept; and/or
• Development and/or validation of new interventions, tools, methodologies, protocols, theoretical models or frameworks.

5G and IoT infrastructure and new applications are expected to generate massive amounts of data, thereby driving changes to network architecture. Data processing and content distribution will be forced closer to the network edge, driving the need for much more efficient and programmable edge compute infrastructure. Traditionally, such edge compute infrastructure needs have been met with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) providing a reprogrammable protocol handling layer (at PHYs or NICs), and generic CPUs (possibly augmented with GPUs) interconnected through a largely static network switching fabric. The objective of this project is to investigate approaches and develop a software tool kit for managing and programming a fabric of interconnected FPGAs. The FPGA fabric (i.e. multiple FPGAs interconnected to appear as a single large virtual FPGA) is intended to absorb functions that are currently spread across multiple elements: protocol adapters, switching ASICs, networking functions, data processing CPU/GPU functions, etc. The project is expected todeliver a set of algorithms, techniques and tools for adaptive and optimized sizing, placement and chaining of required functions inside the FPGA fabric.

The objective of this research challenge is to develop and verify Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) driven approaches for automated design, planning and operations of ‘full stack’ 5G era systems employing the principles of self-organization and self-optimization.

The FY19 Defense Appropriation provides $125 million (M) to the Department of Defense Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Research Program (PHTBIRP) to support specific Defense Health Agency (DHA) J9 Research and Development Directorate program areas, including Joint Program Committee-5/Military Operational Medicine Research Program (JPC-5/MOMRP).  As directed by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, the DHA J9 Research and Development Directorate manages the Defense Health Program (DHP) Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) appropriation. The managing agent for the anticipated Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC).

Prevention Research to Reduce Sexual Assault and/or Understand Adjustment Disorders (PSAAD) – Letter of Intent Due September 19, 2019

Investigators at all academic levels are eligible to be names as a Principal Investigator on the application.

• The PSAAD IIFRA is intended to support research focused on (1) development or adaptation of prevention efforts to reduce the occurrence of sexual assault and/or harassment and/or (2) understanding the diagnosis, assessment, and screening of adjustment disorders as a consequence of sexual assault and/or stressors that precipitate adjustment disorders.
• All applications must address at least one of the PSAAD IIFRA Focus Areas and be of clear scientific merit with direct relevance to military and public health.
• Research involving human subjects is permitted; however, this award may not be used to conduct clinical trials.
• Preclinical research using animals is not permitted.
• This funding opportunity is not focused on Veterans.
• Submission of a Letter of Intent is required.
• Maximum funding of $750K for direct costs (includes direct and indirect costs).
• Maximum period of performance is 3 years.

The Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP) funds downstream research and development (R&D) projects that address real world opportunities and challenges defined by “Receptor” organizations such as industry, government, or not-for-profit entities. These organizations should be committed to commercializing or implementing the outcomes of the project. Projects are led by the Receptor organization (Canadian or international) but are active collaborations with a Canadian academic researcher. These projects are co-funded by Receptors and other stakeholders and must have the potential to generate significant social and/or economic benefits for Canada. The GAPP aims to:

• Accelerate the application of Canadian genomics-derived solutions from academia to real-world opportunities and challenges defined by industry, not-for-profit and public-sector Receptors.
• Channel Canada’s genomics capacity into sustainable innovations that benefit Canadians.
• Enhance the value of Canadian genomics technologies by de-risking and incentivizing follow-on investment from industry and other partners.
• Foster mutually beneficial collaboration and knowledge exchange between Canadian academia and technology receptors.

BWF's Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) provide $500,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. These awards are open to U.S. and Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents.

These grants are intended to foster the early career development of researchers who have transitioned or are transitioning from undergraduate and/or graduate work in the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or engineering into postdoctoral work in the biological sciences, and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research.

Scientific advances such as genomics, quantitative structural biology, imaging techniques, and modeling of complex systems have created opportunities for exciting research careers at the interface between the physical/computational sciences and the biological sciences. Tackling key problems in biology will require scientists trained in areas such as chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, and engineering.

Description of funding

You can apply for up to $300,000 in contribution funding per year, for projects up to 36 months in duration. These projects have to focus on fostering partnerships, innovation and addressing data/research gaps in Canada.

Eligible organizations may submit only one application for funding in this process.
