Weston Family Awards in Northern Research Doctoral (PhD) Level Awards

How to Apply:
Since 2007, the Weston Family Awards in Northern Research (formerly The W. Garfield Weston Awards in Northern Research) have provided unparalleled support to young scientists undertaking research in Canada’s North. Their research spans a broad spectrum of fields and disciplines in the natural sciences and is addressing key knowledge gaps in our understanding of northern landscapes. Since the awards program’s inception, nearly 300 young scientists have been supported resulting in a community of Weston Family Northern Scientists at the forefront of northern scholarship, all of whom share a passion for Arctic and Northern research and all of whom are helping to create a better future for Canada and for the world. The awards are some of the largest in the country for students pursuing a master’s degree, doctoral degree or postdoctoral fellowship. The awards program supports an “Extended Stay” program that enables master’s and doctoral level students to apply for additional funding to engage with northerners (including Indigenous and nonIndigenous communities and community members), disseminate the results of their field research and maximize the impact of their work. The awards program also supports “Travel Allowances” for postdoctoral fellows that allow them to perform research in the North and attend conferences.

In the 2021-2022 program year, the Weston Family Foundation (formerly The W. Garfield Weston Foundation) will aim to support up to ten (10) awards for students at the doctoral level. Each award is valued at $50,000 over two (2) years.

Data and Technology Open Call for Proposals Mobilizing Data and Technology to Support the Prevention of Youth Homelessness

How to Apply:

Background and Objectives

Researchers, service providers, advocates, and policymakers in the homelessness sector need access to timely, accurate, and comprehensive data to identify barriers and opportunities to enhance services and improve policies that contribute to homelessness prevention.

To its credit, the homelessness sector in Canada has taken important steps to improve its capacity to collect, store, and access data. However, there is much more that needs to be done to:

  1. Expand and enhance data infrastructure to harmonize and integrate data systems and platforms.
  2. Identify and test analytical methods to improve evidence-based decision-making.
  3. Explore the role of new technologies to predict and prevent homelessness from occurring.

To address these gaps in research and to create a space for exploration and innovation, Making the Shift (MtS) is soliciting proposals from researchers and community organizations (who are able to hold tri-council funding) for one-time grants that respond to one of the following funding streams:

  1. Developing a data infrastructure roadmap to support policy, operational, and research decision-making
  2. Exploring opportunities to use data, technology, infrastructure, and new methods of data analysis to better understand and prevent youth homelessness

The purpose of this call for proposals is to develop exceptional projects that address gaps specific to the MtS research agenda focusing on the prevention of youth homelessness and to complement the scope of the existing MtS-funded projects. Successful proposals should be designed to begin as soon as possible after notification of award. Submissions may be entered by an individual or a team. Priority will be given to projects that have strong partnerships and include people with lived experience of youth homelessness. Matching funds in the form of cash or in-kind contributions are encouraged.

Important note: For further information on eligibility, application guidelines and any specific requirements (if applicable) under each funding stream please refer to the application guide.

Areas of focus are neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, in particular diabetes & obesity, genetic diseases involving errors in glycan metabolism, and cancer. Additional information about Network research can be found at www.glyconet.ca. A key goal of GlycoNet is the translation of research advances into novel products for treating disease. Accordingly this Request for Proposals seeks to fund more mature projects needing Network support to de-risk and advance them to a state at which translation is possible.

Request for Proposals Clinical Partnerships – 2021–2022

How to Apply:
The Canadian Glycomics Network (GlycoNet) is a Network of Centres of Excellence (NCE) that focuses on the role of glycans (carbohydrates) in health. Areas of focus are infectious diseases, chronic diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Additional information about Network research can be found at www.glyconet.ca.

In this Request for Proposals, we are seeking to fund Clinical Partnership projects that would offer clinicians and biomedical researchers opportunities to partner with Network Investigators to study glycans or glycosylation changes in disease. This partnership would increase clinician awareness of the role of glycomics in disease, and expand glycomics translational research and its application in more problems of clinical importance. Partnership outcomes could be better understanding of disease, drug development strategies, or new drug targets.

Idea to Innovation Grants

How to Apply:

The objective of the Idea to Innovation (I2I) grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established Canadian company. The I2I grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. This is achieved through defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection.
